More Russian Stories
Right now, Deep Purple are coming to the end of the
Russian Tour (14 dates plus 3 in Ukraine). Steve Morse
found a computer and wrote another letter. Here
is a few bits:
"Here in Nizhny Novgorod, we find out that this is the 3rd largest Russian city
in this tremendously spread out Country. It used to be called Gorky, and then
after the fall of Communism, was renamed back to Nizhny Novgorod."
"More and more, I see the young people as indistinguishable from any European
city. They are patient, articulate in English, and inquisitive about other
styles of music."

letter.

Roger's Siberia Stories
A few days ago, Steve Morse took some time off and wrote a few lines about the tour in
Siberia, Russia. Now it's Roger Glover's turn. Here
is a few bits:
"The other day a local promoter flew half way across Russia to have his
photograph taken with us so that upon his return he could have it published in
the local newspaper; apparently no one could believe we were really coming to
town."
"What a welcome we have here. The age range is impressive. Amongst the grizzled
features of the older ones bent on re-living their younger days when our songs
were illegal copies of copies there are plenty of rosy-cheeked teenagers jumping
up and down and even younger ones raising their hands in the air and having the
time of their lives."
"The Russians are so happy to see us that it would be churlish to complain much.
As Ian Gillan is fond of saying, "We are lucky buggers." It’s a wonderful
experience to see this country and meet people who are as down to earth, warm
and welcoming as anybody anywhere."

letter here.

Roger Glover for the information. October 17

Steve's Siberia Stories
Right now, Deep Purple are doing a major
Russian Tour (14 dates plus 3 in Ukraine). Steve Morse
took some time off and wrote a few lines about the tour in Siberia, Russia. Here
is a few bits:
"Our first gig in Siberia went excellent. I love these people. Even the guy that
squeezed my hand so hard, I was sure there were 2 fingers missing before I could
count them all. They've had a hard life in many ways, but they totally support
the arts, and put their heart and soul into everything musical."
"It's still like the wild West out here, except it's the wild East. People are
still very nice, though. We saw a 3 hour line of cars waiting to get into
Vladivostok, which is about what the difference was between our arrival with
police escort and the luggage, without escort."
"Gigs have gone very well. All sold out, and very attentive audiences, who are
also willing to be quiet in the occasional mellow moment."

Part 2.
