I owe the fans (to put on a good show) from the very first note I play."
About the Rockford gig:
"There will be a mix of the classics, obscure stuff, songs off

Ian Gillan Interview
The Scene Magazine
got Deep Purple on the
cover in
the lastest issue (nr: 493) and a few words with Ian Gillan well. Here is a few
bits:
"I like ironing because it's one of the most therapeutic and no-brainer things
you can do when you're trying to write lyrics. I'm listening to some backing
tracks that the guys have put down and just trying to collect some ideas and
phrasing."
"That last record, Bananas, got more play at my house, amongst my friends that
any other record I've ever made. It s also my favourite Deep Purple record."
"If anyone could be a fly on the wall at our writing sessions, they'd see five
guys laughing, drinking tea and coming up with new ideas. There is no leader.
There never has been. This is very much a family and everyone's involved."

Don Airey Comes Home
Don Airey is back in his native North East to play a gig at South
Shields (UK). BBC Wear caught up with
Don for a some questions. Here is a few bits.
About the new Deep Purple album:
"We spent five weeks in a studio in Los Angeles, putting down 12 or 13 tracks
together. Ian Gillan’s close to finishing off the vocals, so the album is nearly
complete. We’ll have a listen, and maybe add a few more things, but it should be
out in October or November, I think."
"It’s a bit of a departure from the last album. It’s a lot
heavier, and I think it will turn a few heads. We recorded it in the same studio
that use to be used by Korn, and it’s got a
wonderful sound. It’s got a real, immediate drum and organ sound. I was really
happy working in there."
About his book:
"It’s about half done now. It’s hard work, you know! I’ve just made up with my
old mate Rudy Sarzo, who played bass in
the Ozzy band, and he’s got a book coming out
too. He said the best way to do it is a page a day. If you can do that, you’ll
be ok. So I’ve kind of slowed down a bit, and I’m just taking my time."
Don Airey & Friends play the
Civic Amphitheatre, South Shields on Saturday 4 June. Entrance is free

Deep Purple Interview
Here are some translated highlights from a
recent article
based on the press conference in Finland May 21.
About choosing songs for the setlist:
"Ian Gillan thinks it would be fun to some time try to do a show with mostly
newer material and only include three classic tracks.
Is it possible to do a show without Smoke On The Water?
Roger Glover smiles:
- Of course it's possible. You can do it if you want a riot. But it has actually
happened. Ritchie [Blackmore] refused to play it a couple of times."
About the new album:
"Deep Purple is at work with a new studio album which probably will be released
at the end of this year. The follow-up to 'Bananas' will also be produced by
Michael Bradford.
The songs are done as team work. The inspiration is apparently flowing.
- We went into the studio with no finalized songs and one day later, we were
working on nine of twelve songs, says Paice.
Steve Morse's explanation for this is that Deep Purple is a fantastic band to
write songs with. Everyone are experienced and creative musicians who all
contributes new elements to the songs."
About favorite songs:
"Don Airey doesn't hesitate: 'Rat Bat Blue'.
Glover is also sure: 'Perfect Strangers'.
'Contact Lost", says Gillan. It gives me a chance to go to the bar, he clarifies.
- All songs I've been involved in writing, says Paice, while Morse says it
depends on which feeling you're after: 'Highway Star', 'Perfect Strangers',
'Speed King'."

Buy Ian Gillan's Watch
Ian Gillan is selling a watch on Ebay and all proceeds from this
auction will go to charity. The watch was presented to Gillan by the
manufacturer at the 2002 Montreux Jazz Festival and is inscribed with the
initials "I.G." on the back. Ian Gillan said, "I have donated it to raise money
for a good cause, a local charity." Steve Cross is helping Ian Gillan sell the
watch and says this about the charity: "The proceeds are going towards 'Candles
on the Cobb'. The Cobb is the name of the ancient harbour wall down here in
Lyme Regis. This event has taken place twice before, and is organised by the
Assistant Harbourmaster and the Town Crier (Mike and Phil respectively). The
whole outline of the Cobb walls, and the outline of the harbour is illuminated
by approx 6000 (minimum) candles, arranged and lit by teams of volunteers. It is
a huge spectacle which is attended by thousands of people from all over. They
all pay to see the event, and they sponsor candles in remembrance etc. All
monies raised are distributed immediately to local good causes, by the Candles
on the Cobb organisers. These causes vary from year to year, and we are leaving
this up to them! The purpose of this auction is to help pay for the event to be
put on." The major beneficiaries of funds from 'Candles
on the Cobb' are Cancer Research
UK, and CLIK.

Ian Paice Studio Report
Martin Popoff at BraveWords
got a few words with Ian Paice about the next studio album. Here is a few bits
from Ian:
"I just finish my part for the next CD last month. And that will be going
through its final processes during the summer, and hopefully it will be out end
of the summer, or sometime before Christmas."
"At the moment, there are 12 tracks there - there are probably eight pieces of
music and four songs. So we'll find out in the next four or five weeks which
ones are going to hack it, and hopefully if they'll cut the mustard, then we've
got a complete CD. If not, we'll have to go in and cut another two or three
tracks."
"There's two or three fairly heavy tracks, and there is some very, very strange
stuff going on. As I say, at the moment, they're sort of half-cooked. You can't
really tell until the vocals and the top lines are on, but there is some great
playing, some very interesting ideas. I think a lot of fans who liked the last
two or three albums will definitely enjoy it, and I think a lot of the people
who like a lot of the older stuff will enjoy it too."
