RAH album update
We got a mail from Roger Glover:
I've just returned from a week spent in Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Wiltshire, mixing the RAH recording. Jon and IG were there also, IP popped in and Paul Mann came for a couple of days, helping with the Concerto mix. It was a great week, good teamwork, and it's all coming together very well. The studio is a dream, a schoolboy's dream. Peter himself was there working as well, and has done an absolutely first class job on the studio IMHO. I was very impressed. Still looking at a January release, on the Eagle Rock label, with the possibility of a video, or at least a TV showing, before Christmas. As news comes I'll pass it on.

New solo album from Roger Glover
Roger Glover has started recording his next solo album. So far there are five songs recorded; What You Don't Say, Thinking 'Bout Nothing Else, Burn Me Up Slowly, It Could've Been Me, and My Turn. So far the musicians are Randall Bramlett (vocals, keyboards, saxophone), Joe Bonadio (drums and percussion), and Eran Tabib (guitar). There is no label information at this moment.
Roger says he is anxious to continue, time permitting, and he hopes he can do this before the end of the year.

The "fans only" video now on sale
The "fans only" video, "A Band Downunder" is now for sale now at the DP Online store. This limited edition release has seen less than 400 NTSC and PAL copies arrive at the store, and when they are gone, there apparently won't be a second pressing. The video features live performances from other Australian shows, as well as stunning performances of "When A Blind Man Cries", "Seventh Heaven", and "Into the Fire" from the House of Blues shows in LA. All interviews from the April 99 Australian tour are included, which provide an insightful perspective of Purple's present state as well as their rich history. Ian Gillan also provides a rare glimpse into his writing style, his personal life, Ritchie, Steve, and a narrative of his Australian rainforest walkabout.

Gillan convention cancelled
We got this message forwarded to us by Mike Steele:
things have changed a bit since my last update...due to various recording commitments and various other factors outside our control we have been forced to postpone the convention for a few months. Instead we are still putting Bernie Torme and Gillian (Gillan tribute band) on that evening for the reduced price of £5. The convention will go ahead at a future date when everyone is available again...they all still want to do it...and there will be a voucher at the Saturday show to anyone who has booked tickets giving them a discount on the rescheduled event. What else can I say...I am as gutted as you...but we will get there in the end.
Thanks also to "stormin" for the same info.

In an interview done on London around the time of the RAH concerts in September, Roger Glover told Swiss TV show "NZZ Format" that he is working on a new solo album. No details of release date or on which label the album will be released are available right now. Stay tuned for more details as we get them. New Deep Purple shaped CD single now available in Australian stores
Michael Janoska from Salisbury, Australia reports:
The Deep Purple Australia '99 CD Single is now available from Sanity music stores across Australia for $10.00. I purchased mine a week ago and suspect they have been in stock for several weeks, although you may have to interrogate the staff to find it. By the way it is in the shape of Australia and looks pretty cool, but I haven't had the chance to listen to it because my CD player doesn't like the irregular shape. Tracks are Black Night and Fireball.

October 5

German cover of "Highway Star"
Jan Sawyer reports:
This evening I heard a version of Highway Star in German Radio WDR 2 by Herbert Knebel and his Affentheater (theatre of apes). Knebel is a German Comedy Star with big success in the charts, too. He published 5 CDs and I don't know wherefrom his Highway Star is. His translation of the title is Grauer Star. Grauer Star is the German terminus of a eye-disease. (grey star).

September 18
Jon Lord and Ian Gillan on VH1 Europe
Jon Lord and Ian Gillan were guests on Tommy Vance's "The Friday Rock Show" on VH1 Europe on Friday September 17. Lord and Gillan talked about the upcoming RAH concert and about the original performance of the "Concerto..." in 1969. "Black Night" from the "Total Abandon" video was featured in the show as well as a clip from the 1969 performance of the "Concerto...". Look out for a Realvideo and Realaudio version of the interview on this site soon. While you wait for that you can have a look at some screen grabs from the interview.
There is a competition going on at the "The Friday Rock Show" where you can win a pair of tickets for next weekend's gig at London's Royal Albert Hall. The question is: Which orchestra are Deep Purple playing with at the Royal Albert Hall? Send your answer in a mail to Tommy Vance. A hint: the answer can be found on this website.

In a poll about "The Band of the Millenium" in Norway's biggest newspaper "Verdens Gang" Deep Purple ended up in fifth place. The Band came in first and Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and The Beatles also managed to beat Deep Purple in the poll. Check out the results.
Thanks to Finn Pedersen for the info.

AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION - CORRECTION
Apparently the information we had the other day about the Australian competition was wrong. We have received a lot of angry emails about this and I am really, really sorry about that. Here is the latest info about the competition straight from the Australian executive producer of Total Abandon:
"Any Sanity store purchases of Total Abandon will see buyers go into the draw to win a return trip to London courtesy of Lauda Air Entries close 10 october."

September 8
Update on Remaster Release Dates
According to an representative from EMI Germany the remasters for the Mark 1 albums ("Shades of Deep Purple", "The Book of Taliesyn" and "Deep Purple") will not be released in 1999. New release date is February 2000. These will be mid-price releases.
The release date for the "Who Do We Think We Are!" remaster is sadly still "to be announced". It will be a full price item.
Deep Purple is also featured in a EMI box set which is a retrospective of the EMI Harvest label. This consists of 5CDs packed inside a 120 page full colour book, and also features other notable Harvest acts like Pink Floyd, ELO etc. As some of you may remember, "The Book of Taliesyn" was the first release on Harvest, and all the Deep Purple studio albums up to and including "Fireball" were released on this legendary progressive label. More details when we have them.

September 6
DPAS convention before the Sunday RAH show
The DPAS are holding a mini convention for members before the RAH gig on Sunday. More details will follow as soon as they've booked a suitable room.
A pub meeting organized by the people in the alt.music.deep-purple newsgroup will be held before the Saturday show. Details about both these meetings and the Company of Snakes show at the Astoria2 on Friday will be available in our special feature about the Royal Albert Hall shows.

September 2
Pamela, Paul, and Paicey
On September 18th, Paul McCartney will be performing the only live gig in conjunction with the release of his new album, "Run Devil Run", featuring "our own" Ian Paice on drums. Paice will be in the band, along with David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. The album consists mainly of 50s r'n'r classics that inspired McCartney back when The Beatles were formed.
The concert is at PETA's Party of the Century and Humanitarian Awards. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) will honor individuals who have made the fight for animal rights one of the biggest social movements of the millennium. McCartney will amongst other things be presenting the first Linda McCartney Memorial Award to Pamela Anderson Lee, for her work for the animals.
The event will be live web-cast from PETA's website.
September will be a busy month for Ian Paice. On the 10th and 11th of September, he will be playing with Tony Ashton and Paul Martinez at Hell Blues Festival in Hell, Norway. He will also be doing a drum clinic during his stay there, also on September 11th.
Oh, and there's a couple of Purple gigs in London near the end of the month, too...
