News from the DPAS - April 9, 2000

The main reason for this mail-out is to let everyone know about the imminent Days May Come CD release. First though a quick between issues news update, as Deep Purple themselves have been out and about. They did quite a lot of promotional work including TV for the Concerto 2 release (the video and DVD formats shipped a bit late but are now out), most of it in Germany (details next issue) where the CD did very well. A long awaited photobook covering the Concerto weekend, based on pictures by Gillan's old photographer Mick Gregory, is out any day. This promises colour and black and white shots from the rehearsals, back stage and the show itself. We plan to supply this through our mail order list but have no price info just yet.

Jon Lord also did a secret gig with Sam Brown recently at a trade do, more news in the mag. Meanwhile the response to he September 1999 Albert Hall shows has been so positive that they are going to take it on the road with a series of one-nighters later this year. Plans are still in the formative stages, but may include shows in America and even Australia. European shows will be in October, and include Spain, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia and others. Tickets for the show in Pails on October 21st at the Palais des Congres are now on sale. The band will probably be working with a Romanian Orchestra for all the European dates.

Deep Purple have nearly finished their latest batch of Abandon tour dates, visiting Japan for six shows in March, There are gigs in Russia and Greece and a festival in Switzerland to come (Apr. 12th International Trade Centre, Greece. Apr. 13th Olympic Stadium Sports Hall, Athens, Greece. Apr. 15th SnOwPEN-AIR Kicine Scheidegg, Switzerland). Best news is that Fools has been added to the set and the track listings I've seen had them getting the golden oldies out the way early on before concentrating on the recent material more fully. Reviews and news in DTB issue 53 (dont forget to send us reports and pics if you have them).

After this we assume they will get down to the next studio album! The bad news for the UK is that here will be no shows here this year. This is a shame as theyd built up such a good momentum. Why they didnt capitalise on it all with (say) two London gigs in March is a mystery. Two nights at the Fairfield Hall, Croydon this November guys - how about it? The two videos we mentioned in Issue 52 are now about to hit the market. Around The World Live 1995-1999 (a compilation) and Bombay Calling Live in India 1995 will appear in a number of formats, and were told we will be able to supply them. No price details yet (though probably about the same as Total Abandon), so if youre interested send us an SAE. Call in a few weeks or check the web site.

Theres been some confusion regarding Deep Purple and family reissue titles on the Spitfire label in America which have been offered as rare imports. Rest assured Spitfire are not issuing ANYTHING that hasnt already been out in Europe long ago (whatever the dealers tell you!). Who Do We Think We Are has now been scheduled and we'll have details next issue. Also due from EMI is their answer to Rhinos 3CD DP set last year. It'll be a 5CD collection ranging from 1968 to the present day, accompanied by a 100 page album sized book. EMI plan to make this a real deluxe project with high production values. Out in time for Christmas. Moving on, Glenn Hughes new CD is in the finishing stages, tilled Return Of Crystal Karma, with a bonus track for Japan only (thanks).

David Coverdales new CD is due soon and will be a solo offering rather than a Whitesnake release. Talking of Whitesnake, currently there is a French reissue of Ready An Willing around on import. Be wary. EMI are planning a full Whitesnake remastering programme starting later this year with proper bonus tracks etc. Details in [Darker than blue] Issue 53.

Expect a run on Lincoln green tights at Marks and Spencers as Blackmores Night have finally got it together to play live in the UK. The dates are:
May 21. York, Grand Opera House (tel 01904 671818)
May 22. Newcastle (venue not known)
May 24. Cambridge, Corn Exchange (tel 01223 357851)
May 25. London, Cambridge Theatre
May 27. Marlborough with possibly one more show
(Truro has been mentioned, Sheffield hasn't!). Check out Blacker's web site for more de- tails but York tickets are on sale already. Talking of Black- more, Ronnie Dio does just that in the current issue of Classic Rock magazine. Let's just say its a good job they got Ritchie to chat before he'd seen this issue.

Finally then, back to Days May Come. Given that there have been so many false release dates bandied about by unscrupulous dealers since Purple Records first had to put this title on hold in late 1998, we figured it would be better to wait until everything was settled before letting you know. Tracks and release info are overleaf. There are also a couple of mail-order only items associated with the release too, which are also covered - a bonus half hour of material (the stuff which wasn't good enough for Days but which Im sure hard-core fans might be interested in) called 1420 Beachwood Drive, and a special b/w Mk 4 photo book (we trust you wont mind the merchandise sheet - it helps pay for the cost of the newsletter).

Two other new Purple Records titles are also detailed. In answer to a few enquiries, there was a special 500 run promo edition of Days issued with a different inlay etc. We don't have any stock at present but it's possible we may get a few back from our distributors in a month or so. Musically it was identical to the regular release.

Issue 53 of DTB is underway and will include the fascinating and lengthy interview with Days May Come engineer Robert Simon which weve been promising for ages, news of the missing Cal Jam camera footage being found plus he usual nonsense. If you've anything for the mag get it to us soonest. See you then.
