Deep Vertigo Just watched Deep Purple's new DVD Perihelion and I find myself of a spilt mind as to how to review it. First off, The band performed great. Big Ian was in very good voice. Steve's playing was terrific as always. Roger and Ian Paice kept the rhythm hard, hot and heavy. It was really wonderful seeing Jon Lord once again especially now that he's left the band. Next, the sound quality was really good. I just love that 5.1. It brings out shades of sound that make this a great sounding DVD. I just have a few problems with the direction/editing. My attention span is longer than five seconds, but that's about as long as you get between shifts in what you are viewing. I feel that these swift cuts are more suited to the MTV generation because (for a person of my age) it just gave me vertigo. Also along that same line, what is it with the 47th row camera angle? I mean, Steve would start one of his marvellous solos, and within five seconds (I'm not kidding) I'd find my point of view shifted to way back in the nose bleed section. Not good for one who likes to watch Steve's fingers, no, not good at all. There was also a little too much of the drunken audience. I mean between songs it's OK to see them, but in the middle of a song I want to see the band. After reading the reviews from that time I also find that this is not the entire show. Where is Steve's Riff Raff? Where is Ian singing It's Now Or Never? I do recommend this DVD. It sounds great and it's great to see the lads, it just made me a bit dizzy from the camera angle changes. One suggestion I would make is don't get Perihelion until you have the Total Abandon DVD. In my opinion this still stands as the best Deep Purple show on DVD. (Then again I haven't seen the Bombay Calling DVD yet.) To end on a high note - Mary Long, No One Came and Fools were especially welcome and all songs were very well performed. Deep Purple is the greatest band in the world. But I may be just a little biased. Regards,
