Hey Cisco
Mk 7 (Gillan/Glover/Lord/Morse/Paice): from Purpendicular. Live versions released on Live At The Olympia '96 and Perihelion DVD.

Hey Joe
Mk 1 (Billy Roberts): From Shades Of Deep Purple. This track starts with a bolero-type introduction (based on The Miller's Dance from a ballet score called The Three Cornered Hat by Spaniard Manuel de Falla) then slows down to the main track. See Songs covered by Deep Purple for the full story of this song. Released on the b-side of Help in France in 1968. A BBC version was recorded 14 January 1969 and released on Shades of Deep Purple Remastered in February 2000. Recorded live and released on Inglewood 68 CD in 2002. A 2003 remix was released on The Early Years CD in March 2004.

Highball Shooter

In a radio interview, on South African radio, Jon Lord very clearly stated the title as "The Highland". Performed as an instrumental unplugged version on South African radio station 5fm on 23 March 1995 by Steve Morse, Roger Glover and Jon Lord. Not officially released.

Highway Star
Mk 2 (Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice): from Machine Head. Remixed in 1997 by Roger Glover and released on 25th Anniversary Edition of Machine Head. Heavily edited [2.58] vs [6.05] and released as a single in US and Japan in 1972.

Hungry Daze

Hush
Mk 1 & 2b (Joe South): from Shades Of Deep Purple. Released as a single in 1968. A 1968 monitor mix was released on The Early Years CD in March 2004. Re-recorded by Mk 2b at the Hook End Manor in 1988. Released on Nobody's Perfect and as a single. The 1988 re-recording of Hush was not actually recorded at a concert performance though it is often incorrectly listed as a "live" version, probably due to its inclusion on the Nobody's Perfect live album. It is, in fact, a "live jam" from a rehearsal session at Hook End Manor, February 1988.

Live performances - Mk 1, 2 & 7
Performed live on the "Playboy After Dark TV" show on 23 October 1968 in Los Angeles. Released on Heavy Metal Pioneers Video and Shades of Deep Purple Remastered in 2000. This live version was first released on Powerhouse in 1977 and on CD on New, Live And Rare (Japan 1989), On The Road 4CD box set, Concerto For Group And Orchestra special edition CD re-issue 2002 and Listen Learn Read On 6CD box set in 2002. Recorded live at Montreux Casino in October 1969 and released on Kneel & Pray in 2003. Recorded live in Istanbul Turkey June 1998 and released on Around The World 1995 - 1999 video. Mk 1 (Skip James): part of a medley with Prelude: Happiness, released on Shades of Deep Purple. I'm So Glad by itself [4.53] vs [7.16] was released on The Best Of Deep Purple album in the US in 1970. The 1990 CD re-issue of The Best Of Deep Purple includes the full track [7.16], though only I'm So Glad and the incorrect track timing of [4.53] is listed on the sleeve. I've Got Your Number
Mk 8 (Bradford/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Morse/Paice): from Bananas

Performed live during 2002 as Up The Wall.
Both 'I've Got Your Number' and 'Picture Of Innocence' were songs that we wrote a few years ago, hence Jon's inclusion as a writer but not as a performer, although he is on one of the demos.

IGYN started at the same writing session [as POI] in Orlando but by the time we made a demo in Steve's studio it had undergone several changes; it was far, far more complicated to begin with - the riff was in various time signatures as the drums just thundered through in straight 4/4. We simplified it, wrote some lyrics, mostly IG's, and started performing it under the title 'Up The Wall'. However, it always felt unfinished and it was only when we got to LA and played it for Michael that he suggested that it needed a chorus, so we wrote one. As is often the case, IG sang garbled words over the band as we routined it, I thought I heard him sing the words 'I got your number' although he probably didn't; he kind of sings words that aren't words but sound like they are. Anyway, I sang them back to him and it clicked. There is the song.

So, Jon wrote them with us but Don played on the record. There are several ideas kicking around that were written while Jon was still with us and some of them have great potential. I hope one day we'll be able to work on them again. -- Roger Glover, August 2003
