Also released as a bonus track on the 2000 CD re-issue of Deep Purple. Album The album version was recorded during February & March 1969 and released on Deep Purple in June 1969. BBC Deep Purple Mark 2 recorded this track for the BBC on 11 August 1969 and it was released as a track on New, Live And Rare Volume 3 EP in 1980. The full-length version [4.47] remained unreleased until Roger Glover remixed it for the 1995 Anniversary Edition of In Rock. The single edit [3.28] was released in June 1970 backed by Speed King, Living Wreck or Into The Fire depending on the country. It first appeared on an album on the Mark I & II compilation in 1974 and has been released on many vinyl and CD compilations since then, including the 1995 Anniversary Edition of In Rock which is probably the best place for it. Recorded at the BBC on 23 September 1970, but only officially released on the Listen Learn Read On 6CD box set in 2002 Live Performances Mk 2 & 7 Black Night has been recorded live on numerous occasions. The most well-known is probably the encore version recorded in Tokyo on 17 August 1972 during the famous Made In Japan concerts, but not released on the original album. This live version was first released as the b-side of Woman From Tokyo in Italy and France in 1973. In Germany (in 1973) and Japan (in 1975) it was used as the a-side. First release on an album was the 24 Carat Purple compilation in 1975. It was also released on the Powerhouse rarities collection in 1977 and on the New, Live And Rare (Volume 1) EP, also in 1977. Released on CD on the Singles A's and B's in 1993. On the 2CD 25th Anniversary Edition of Made in Japan (1998) it appeared as a longer version [6.17] vs [4.59] with the warm-up section intact. More live versions can be found on the following releases: Scandinavian Nights CD, Scandinavian Nights video, Live In Denmark 1972, Live in Japan, Knebworth '85, Nobody's Perfect, Come Hell Or High Water CD, Come Hell Or High Water video/DVD, Live At The Olympia '96, Live And Blue (Out Of The Mists Of Time), Total Abandon CD, Total Abandon video/DVD, On The Road, New, Live & Rare - The Bootleg Collection 1984-2000, Live At Rotterdam Ahoy, The Soundboard Series, Listen Learn Read On. Black Night was also performed as an instrumental unplugged version in a medley with Child in Time on South African radio station 5fm on 23 March 1995 by Steve Morse, Roger Glover and Jon Lord. No official release exists. Interesting note: The melody for Black Night was based on Summertime by Ricky Nelson, which can also be heard on We Ain't Got Nothing Yet by the Blue Magoos. Ritchie took his guitar and played a riff, which sounded awfully great for me. "You did it, this is going to be our single", I was excited, but Ritchie said "Absolutely no way, it is 'Summertime' by Ricky Nelson". With drunken stubborness I held that idea and finally I had my way.Blackmore's Blues: see Blues Blind Mk 1 (Lord): from Deep Purple A 2003 remix was released on The Early Years CD in March 2004. Bloodsucker aka Bludsucker Mk 2 & 7 (Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice): from In Rock, re-recorded in 1998 and released on Abandon with spelling changed to Bludsucker. A BBC session was recorded 21 April 1970 and released on Listen Learn Read On 6CD box set. Recorded live in January 1998 and released on Around The World 1995-1999 video. Also recorded live in Australia on 20 April 1999 and released on Total Abandon CD and Total Abandon video/DVD. Bludsucker see Bloodsucker Blues Mk 2, 3 & 5 (Ritchie Blackmore): The names Blues, Ritchie's Blues and Blackmore's Blues have been used by a number of bootleggers and reviewers to refer to the blues introduction that Ritchie used on the 1969, 1987 and 1991 tours. This intro appeared before songs like Paint It Black (1969), Dead Or Alive (1987), Lazy, Difficult To Cure or Smoke On The Water (all 1991). The name Blues has also been used to describe the slow guitar/organ interplay during some versions of You Fool No One on the 1974-75 Mk 3 tours. This "slow blues" section is very similar to the sub-section titled Blues during the Man On The Silver Mountain/ Starstruck medley from Rainbow's live album Rainbow On Stage (1977). More: Other blues-style songs include When A Blind Man Cries, You're Gonna Ruin Me, Statesboro' Blues, Pirate Blues, Don't Make Me Happy and Turtle Island Shuffle. Blues Forever Mk 3 (Hughes): This is the bootleggers' title for Glenn Hughes' vocal improvisations during some live performances of Smoke On The Water. Blues Improvisation Mk 7: This is the bootleggers' title for You're Gonna Ruin Me (aka 'Gonna Let You Go') from the Live at Rockline performance in May 2000. The Boys Are Back In Town Mk 7 (Phil Lynott): short excerpt of the Thin Lizzy classic used as a show opener on the 1999 European tour. No official release. Breakfast In Bed Mk 5 (Blackmore/Glover/Turner): from Slaves And Masters Burn Mk 3 (Blackmore/Lord/Paice/Coverdale): from Burn. This single edit was released on CD on Smoke On The Water - The Best Of (France 1994) and 30: The Very Best (1CD). The Japanese 3CD Purple Chronicles compilation from 1993 included 2 other edits [3.42] and [4.45]; not sure of the origin of these (The [4.45] edit could be the live version released on New, Live And Rare Volume 2 EP in 1978, see below). The Malaysian Soldier Of Fortune compilation in 1994 also used an unidentified edit [4.51]. Live Performances Mk 3 & 4 Released on: California Jamming, Live At The California Jam video, Live In London, On The Road 4CD box set, The Anthology (1991 CD version), Perks & Tit, Made In Europe, Mk III The Final Concerts, Last Concert In Japan, This Time Around, On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat, Live And Blue (Out Of The Mists Of Time), Deep Purple Rises Over Japan video. Child In Time was filmed live for Granada TV on 14 July 1970 and released on Doing Their Thing video. More live versions can be found on the following releases: Kneel & Pray, In Concert, Scandinavian Nights CD, Scandinavian Nights video, Live In Denmark 1972, Made In Japan, Live in Japan, 24 Carat Purple, The Mark 2 Purple Singles, Nobody's Perfect, Come Hell Or High Water CD, Come Hell Or High Water video/DVD, Live And Blue (Out Of The Mists Of Time), On The Road, New, Live & Rare - The Bootleg Collection 1984-2000, Around The World 1995-1999 video, Bombay Calling video/DVD. An instrumental live snippet made a brief appearance during Jon Lord's solo on Space Truckin' from Mk III The Final Concerts. Unplugged - Mk 7 Child In Time was also performed as an instrumental unplugged version in a medley with Black Night on South African radio station 5fm on 23 March 1995 by Steve Morse, Roger Glover and Jon Lord. Not officially released. Interesting note: Deep Purple admits to "borrowing" the beginning of Child In Time from It's A Beautiful Day's Bombay Calling. It's A Beautiful Day then used the tune of Wring That Neck for Don And Dewey on their Marrying Maiden album as a sort-of exchange. On the musical side, there used to be this song Bombay Calling by a band called It's A Beautiful Day. It was fresh and original, when Jon was one day playing it on his keyboard. It sounded good, and we thought we'd play around with it, change it a bit and do something new keeping that as a base. - Ian Gillan, extract from a DPAS interview 3rd May 2002Clearly Quite Absurd Mk 8: from Rapture Of The Deep. Concerto For Group And Orchestra aka Radio Spot for Concerto Mk 2 (Lord/Gillan): Promo single for radio play only released by Warner Brothers America in 1970.
