A Great RideIan Gillan celebrates his 40 years in the rock business by releasing a compilation album of his work. That's not an easy task to do if you have released so many albums with bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Gillan, Episode Six, solo albums etc. Compilation albums which spins over so long time, almost always have a few problem. The big different in the production, the recording quality and the general feeling of a complete album. Another problem is, who's going to buy the album? The Fans? They maybe have almost everything, so they might buy the album for one or two songs. Ian Gillan has now done a compilation album, but with new recordings of every song. He also has invited musicians and friends he has worked with over these years, such as Joe Satriani, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Janick Gers (Iron Maiden), Jeff Healey, Jon Lord etc. It's a great concept, but does it work? Yes, this is a really great ride Ian invites us on. It's not that these songs are played note by note, they are played in sometimes new improved versions and they sound very fresh. And if this wasn't enough, there is also a DVD side of this disc (Dualdisc), where you can see Ian and other musicians in the studio etc, another great concept. This is probably one of the best buys you can make this year.
