She was a weird one in the setting sun
Vincent Price the other day seemingly opened a floodgate, and a generous helping of live clips from 2013 got posted today. We are talking, of course, about From The Setting Sun (Live In Wacken), which was a sibling release for To The Rising Sun (In Tokyo).
Here is the playlist to brighten up your weekend:
This appears to be the complete show, albeit not quite in the correct running order:
Thanks to BraveWords for the heads-up.
I remember that day, it was burning hot. Cudos to the guys not to fall off the stage at that temperature!
March 15th, 2025 at 22:30I was there with tears in my eyes. This year will be my 10th Wacken then.
March 18th, 2025 at 08:37Ah… The Well Dressed Guitar! I don’t know for how many years that one was a part of the set. And I sure don’t know why … One was led to believe it just had to be played, you know like SOTW or Highway Star …
March 18th, 2025 at 15:20It exuded a certain silliness as a number, but then so did Difficult To Cure. I don’t miss either piece. (Nor late era Rainbow’s similar Hall of the Mountain King.)
When rock bands seriously attempt classical melodies or write something in that vein, the results can often be naff and banal. The only exception I can really think of was ELP’s excellent take on Aaron Copland’s Fanfare For The Common Man

which even he liked as a contemporary and original rendition of his composition.
March 19th, 2025 at 14:52When ‘rock’ bands do their take on a classical tune they are just having a bit of fun, that is all it is. I certainly have never taken any of it seriously. John Williams talked about that scenario with Sky, when they did their versions of a few classics. It is all a bit of fun. Focus used to do that too. Some even do it to stir the pot. Then they sit back and have a laugh at people’s criticisms of it all. At least that is what Sky apparently did in their early days. Is this the first time I have read a positive take on ELP from Uwe? Times are a changing it seems. Good to see, he he he. Cheers.
March 20th, 2025 at 21:16Hey, I’ve never doubted that ELP could play! Their music was sometimes a little heartless and mechanical and Greg Lake‘s ballad stuff could be twee, but they sure were a powerful trio.
