Not so hot on ‘why’

That other opera singer is getting awestruck again by Ian Gillan’s take on Gethsemane:

Thanks to Uwe for the heads-up.

I was only listening to this album last week , it’s literally Jaw Dropping, absolutely stunning …I really, really think that this album is his best vocal performance…ever !
In fact, it has to be one of the best performances by any vocalist on any piece .
I know Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber were blown away by it ( they heard Child in Time and that’s what drew their attention to Ian )

This is pleasantly 100% nose-wrinkle free.

And of course she’s perfectly right, Gillan’s version is the most emotionally gripping one. Big Ian was an agnostic even back then, but he captured rage, tranquility, despair and tenderness in his vocal depiction of Jesus like no other.

I just love those videos when the “reactor” knows what they are talking about and add new layers to what I knew about my favorite songs.

My question is about the video she is reacting to. I have seen it quite a few times, been struck by its incompleteness… but does anybody know how “legit” it is?

Was it released back in 1970? Is it a studio outtake? Before this one appeared, I had seen another BW video of Gethsemane with another person dubbing. Looks like the same video, only with Ian’s face now on it. Is that a deepfake until half of it?

Some of the footage is (not very well) overdubbed in the aftermath, but it does stem from the 70s. I don’t remember it being released then, but don’t forget that it was initially considered to have Ian play in the movie, maybe they just wanted to see how he would look on screen (he would have passed with flying colors as Jesus – and not only to the Karins of this world either).

Maybe it’s her blond curls and that her face is filmed unfiltered and not hidden under layers of theater makeup in influencer style, but I find her comments more interesting than those of the nose-wrinkly competition.

I thought Jesus had a goatee or even a beard? Ian Gillan did get there a few years later but by then he had cut his hair shorter, work that one out. His timing was appalling, all over the shop. A chance at Hollywood ‘stardom’ went beckoning. Cheers.

“he would have passed with flying colors as Jesus – and not only to the Karins of this world either.” – ahem, are we more than me?

(I’m thinking multiple personality disorder here 😝😄)

Parallel universes are everywhere, Karin, in one of them they just caught another version of you on film, shockingly so …

Your wish is my command, Karin, in that great Nordic tradition of dancing around midsummer bonfires au naturel in pagan abandon, I herewith present to you:
