Just to keep things interesting

To prove his thesis that “Life in Deep Purple has never been dull”, Geoff Barton lists 25 of the maddest moments from the band’s history. And California Jam is not one of them.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you probably already heard about most all of it. Nevertheless, here we go:

1. Rock’n’Roll Circus nightclub, Paris, October 1970: As Ian Gillan went to sit down, Ritchie Blackmore pulled away Gillan’s chair. Blackmore: “What I didn’t realise was that behind us was a big drop of about 15 feet and Gillan fell down – crunched his head… after that he was never the same.”

2. The Mk II line-up got together in the studio in 1970 to write a hit single but the inspiration didn’t flow. They went round the corner to the pub – the Newton Arms, near Kingsway, London – and returned to the studio pissed. They immediately laid down their biggest UK hit: Black Night.

Well, I just wonder how much of that is true ☺️😉

Gulp, I need to go out more and spend less times on these people I think, only item #24 (Glenn‘s lavish piano gift for the dealer wife) was news to me! 😂

If Patsy Collins had stayed in the job he had prior to being a DP bodyguard – namely being one for BCR – he might still be alive. Screaming young girls don‘t throw you down elevator shafts, small decisions in life can be fateful.

Number 18 was the only one I cannot remember ever hearing about & that is hilarious indeed. Poor old Cov’s or I should say young at that time & so innocent, not. Those images on his camera, ha ha ha. Blackmore again no doubt, have to enjoy that one. What is it about those Scandinavian countries & all that porn, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, interesting. Of course I have never ever cast my innocent eyes on any of that so I have no idea what they are talking about. Uwe probably will, working in the red light district as a not so innocent youngster and all. Unbelievable that the Cal Jam isn’t on that list, says something about the article surely. Anyway thanks for posting. Cheers.

I have been to thousands of concerts, but…this is a special, bizarre experience
2014 year summer, the heart of summer, immense heat, Croatia, the place of the event, the city on the Adriatic coast, Zadar. tourists) has three times as many residents plays in the summer. Seal, Lenny Kravitz, Santana, The Prodigy, ….and Deep Purple (Now What tour) … as well as support, a big musical name of local and regional importance came … so 2 performers, they are not open air concerts lasting from an hour – an hour and 15 minutes, no… real concerts with a full setlist… the concert starts at 9:00 p.m. (with all the breaks and delays) and lasts deep into the night. DP support was chosen by a Croatian singer named Zlatan Stipišić – Gibboni, on the occasion, he is a fan of DP music, in his early youth he sang in the HM band “Osmi putnik” (the name of the band is a translation of the American film “Alien”) (From 1989 to 1990, Gibboni lived in Berlin, Germany, he plays with the group “V2”, with whom he records the album “Out to launch”. In his mature years he has a solo career, writing music that is a unique mix of melodic hard rock, pop, ethno and “world music”, characterized by a unique, melancholic Mediterranean atmosphere and intimate lyrics.

At 9pm the lights went out…the matrix started playing from the speakers…”Mars, the Bringer of War”, I thought. ..what a big mistake !!!!, but when the sound of a small drum was heard from the darkness, the intro to “Highway Star” and the silhouette of Ian Paice ….so Deep Purple starts !!!as a pre-group….many people haven’t even come to the concert yet, many were at the bars…
They played the full set list routinely. at any moment it is clear that you have in front of you the people who invented all the tricks of rock and roll, on whose legacy almost every ignition of distortion is based. Punk and grunge have survived, as well as any similar attempt to finally put an end to that haughty monumentality of the music of the name hard rock. And they are still there. They open concerts for local stars. Brilliant!!!!

When Zlatan Stipišić -Gibboni finished the concert (around 1:30). The guys from DP were already sleeping soundly in the air-conditioned rooms…that day the temperature was +35 degrees

PS I found out later… they left earlier , because tomorrow early in the morning they will go to the nearby islands, go sailing, and eat seafood specialties .. and they canceled the next concert to extend their summer joys …
    Long Live RnR !..

Life in a band with Ritchie wasn’t easy at all! I wonder if he still does that with BN bandmates. Of course not with Candice!

    Ivica,
I was there. Deep Purple was supposed to play after Gibboni. Then it was changed. We almost missed the concert.
All in all, it was a fantastic concert.
Just one correction. Opening song was “Après Vous”
They didn’t play Highway Star that night.
