For the sake of completeness

Over the years, we’ve announced a multitude of side projects and guest appearances for the various members of the Purple family. Quite inevitably, we’ve missed a few. Here they are, at least some of them. The last number in parentheses refers to the number of tracks the corresponding musician appears on, whenever known.

Don Airey:
Glenn Hughes:
  • Eric Church: 61 days in church (recorded live on 5/April/2017) (21/4/18) (1 track)
  • Eric Church: 61 days in church (idem) (2019 digital download) (1)
  • Hawkestrel: SpaceXmas (2020) (1)
Joe Lynn Turner:
Steve Morse:

There are also some Satriani entries on the list, but since we’ve never opened that particular kettle of fish, it’s probably not the time to start now.

Thanks to Jose ‘no stone left unturned’ Galvan for the info.

Is this supposed to be the Eric Church track? Audibly (as he tends to be!), Glenn is present in the recording …

[Also interesting if you ever wondered how Honky Tonk Women would sound with Carl Palmer one-note slapping on a keytar (@04:40)!]

This here is not from the soundcheck, but from the actual gig:

How Herr MacGregor will profusely thank me for this! PROG GODS (50% of Asia, 33% of Roxy Music, 25% of Colosseum II = 20% of Jethro Tull) playing with themselves.

    I really like this one!.

@2 – thanks for the ‘Asia’ gig & rehearsal clips, Phil Manzanera a tad left out there in many ways. Don Airey is far too busy a ‘progressive’ player for Asia. A band that did ‘dumb it down’ in many aspects, even though I really like their debut album. Carl Palmer’s drumming is also wound right down for the Asia AOR thing. An interesting lineup of musicians though on that stage. Was it a missed opportunity? Perhaps, as many of those get togethers usually are for a charity or something else along those lines. Cheers.

John, I like the track Beautiful Horizon (on the album of the same name) too, but it doesn’t feature Steve Morse at all (no guitar on it sounds remotely like him either).

Alas!, our fearless and cerebral leader Nick has somewhat (I’m sure with the best intentions!) misled us: The core material of The Fusion Syndicate’s second album “Beautiful Horizon” (2023) doesn’t feature Steve at all. But it features three bonus tracks remixed from their 2012 debut, one of them is called “At The Edge Of The Middle” and THAT sees Steve Morse enter with a solo at 01:49 which will have all Morserites here cream into their jazz rock guitar undies, filled as it is with Steve’s mannerisms, pinched notes, chromatic lightning speed runs etc. (Don’t get all angsty, it’s NOT his only solo in the lengthy track!)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzZazU4oGHs

And here’s the original 2012 mix of the same track.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvkabPtyVbE

There is quite a bit of difference between the two mixes, the more recent one has elevated Steve’s guitar solo to center stage while the original one features it more as an embellishment. So the 2023 mix is probably worth having for Morse nuts.

IF there are any people here that collect all Morse sessions or am I the only one? Does anybody have the Liza Minelli album from 1976 for instance where Steve plays (audibly) guitar on one pleasantly swampy sounding track?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSEKm_0SPhg

Seriously, you can’t really call yourself a true DP fan if that one doesn’t grace your collection! 😁😂🤣

“Is it true that you once played on a Liza Minelli album?”

“Yeah, that was a fluke. I was doing a session and the guys we were recording with were also doing her album and there was a part that someone couldn’t show up for and they said “Before you go, why don’t you do this?” and I said “Well my amp is already on the truck—it’s on its way back to Georgia!” and they said “Well here, plug into this!” They thought it was kind of a country part and that I was an authentic redneck able to play it! [laughs] The song was “When It Comes Down To It.” I never got to meet Liza Minelli or anything. It was just one of those studio moments of mysterious overdubs. It was around 1976. I never heard it myself, because I never saw the album.”

Liza was a great singer, even when she wasn’t wearing a garter belt, stockings & a bowler hat, thus not quite passing Herr MacGregor’s “put something on”-test for serious-minded, non-distracting female musicianship …

All in all, I really just saved Nick’s neck here, dontcha think? Consumer misinformation and all that, will he thank me profusely in public?

    Hey!
I’m not into yoga nor new age 😃

I’m an ordinary homeopath, soon to be adding Light Therapy (for healing traumas) on my CV!
Actually I also am an acupuncturist, but nothing else!

And while I never lie or tell opaque jokes, you know this is the truth ☺️
