The Riff for dummies
In this video tutorial one can learn how to play the Smoke riff with literally zero prior music experience. Which is the majority of people on this planet.
Thanks to BraveWords for the heads up.

A riff with lasting cultural impact, nuff said.
One day, aliens will roam this Earth in search of remnants of humanoid former civilizations. They will find recordings of this riff and say: “Ah, that is what these Earthlings listened and rejoiced too, they called it rock music.”

March 26th, 2022 at 13:220 3 5 0 3 65 0 3 5 3 0 brings me back to my youth. About the only thing that I can play on a guitar or bass is that E-string riff, an E-string In-a-Gada-da-Vida riff, and an E-string Iron Man riff. Plus whatever I made up rearranging the notes in those riffs figuring that I would stay in the same key or chord progression. However, I didn’t know until now that those E-string riffs could be a different key from the actual songs.
March 26th, 2022 at 23:22That’s not the way Richie plays it!
For starters he plucks it with thumb and forefinger which gives it that extra oomph! He even explains it on the “Making of Machine Head” DVD.
It can also be played on the A & D strings from the 5th fret up which again gives it more depth.
