Is this for real?? For decades we’ve been told there’s no footage of any of the concerts in 1972 in Japan, and now this just non-nonchalantly shows up? Can we get some background info on this? Where did it come from? Is there more footage that will be released? I would love to see Space Truckin’ from this concert!
The more I hear live in Japan (Made in Japan) the more I just can’t believe How the break up was just around the corner. If only MK2 lasted for another few years. God knows what would have they become. Ritchie never did anything for the fans it was always about him self. Still we have 3 great studio albums that will last eternally.
There will never be decent footage of this band from these glory days, The MIJ tour, it would have surfaced well & truly by now! What crap is it putting those interview pieces in at the end, utter rubbish! The edited song says a lot! Such a shame, but that is life as we say! Cheers.
If I’m not mistaken this footage comes from the documentary dvd included in the Made in Japan limited box set from a few years back, hence the interviews.
Also a very nice version of Highway Star was included, well worth checking out
It’s said that there is for about 90 minutes worth of footage from the Japan tour, we’re still waiting for a complete release though…
As for footage… There was no professional-grade footage made during this tour. The clips we’ve seen, including this one, typically look like 8 mm shot with a regular consumer camera. The 1972- equivalent to someone holding up their smartphone at gigs today…
In regards to MIJ & it possibly being the known ‘holy grail’ of DP MK2 live in concert. IF ever there was going to be any official unedited genuine live concert footage, it may disappoint many fans who expect to see & hear what they have been listening to for the last 4 decades or so! As we all know, MIJ is recorded from 3 different concerts, the best picks from different gigs, for whatever reason. IF a concert was ever filmed, it will obviously be from one concert, so it may disappoint there for some fans! The old style camera angles that were used in filming live performance back in the day, would also be a possible disappointment. And the audio quality also could be a downer. The live in concert1972/73 dvd is quite good, excepting certain camera shots not showing Blackmore & Lord soloing enough. Otherwise that is more than enough of decent live footage of the classic Purple going through their paces for me! The MIJ live concert film con will be always there I am afraid. There are also very good live clips from earlier MK2 online, classic Fireball & In Rock songs. Forget the MIJ illusion! Cheers.
I thought pretty much everyone here owned or at least was aware that this footage existed. Only the Tokyo show was filmed, 40 min worth. I have done the timings and if i remember, only approx 25 min was used and synched up to the 8/17/72 recording. I have went as far as trying to synch up the cd and the dvd from the box set but it is not possible as one runs slightly slower and they soon drift apart. I even bought the jap stand alone dvd of this show. The content is exactly the same as the dvd that came in the box set. I wish they would have snyched ALL 40 min of footage and put the interviews on at the end, or, at least between the songs, not during them!!!
Well said Macgregor #20 , lets just enjoy the audio from MIJ forever, It is the finest live album ever produced, from the greatest band of that period.
Where has is been mentioned that there was more than 20 min of footage? In the beginning it was revealed that 7 reals of 8mm file were discovered. 8mm film was in 3 min cartridges. So that is 21 min total.
It actually raises the question, as to what happened to the remaining footage from that May 1973 concert filmed in New York on the ‘In Concert’ dvd! Superb quality & filmed in colour & Gillan is in fine voice indeed. Forget the MIJ grainy, B&W edited & non existent footage. The only blemish with the NY filming, is the ridiculous camera panning to crowd ‘participants’ on a regular basis. WHY Oh why does that happen. You don’t go to a concert to look at the crowd, so why film them????????Who gives a toss about rubbish like that??? Cheers.
I forgot about the dvd notes & the apparent erasing of the remaining concert film, after they edited sections of it for the tv show. Time restraints eh? Bummer if that is what happened. Who can tell, one day someone taking the dust bin out may come across it, or the archives at the ABC may be plundered by a rabid Purple aficionado! Here’s hoping! I remember the Jethro Tull live broadcast from Madison Square Garden back in 1978 I think it was. That has a fair bit of the concert film cut out due to time restraints. Only on the dvd release though, it has has certain songs available live in film & the rest only in audio! Cheers.
@22 They (Amazon customers) are reviewing (read their posts) that garbage series MIJ “Inside DP” type dvd and incorrectly show the cover of the real MIJ dvd as which came in the 5 disc set, as well as the stand alone dvd from japan (I own both). The one we are discussing here…. Expect to pay about $30, not $7.
@26 The remaining Hofstra NY footage was wiped and not used to fit a 30 min TV spot.
There is the Tokyo 1973 footage that Robert Simon shot, which is in the DPAS ‘vaults’ never to be seen except by the priveleged few. It also features the after show riot aftermath footage and clips are on the dvd that came with the Deepest Purple cd/dvd 2 disc set and is glimpsed briefly on the MIJ dvd we are discussing here.
@26 The cameramen were focusing on the chicks with their tits bouncing around mostly. They should have got laid before fiming the show and probably did not give a toss about DP anyways!
Awesome. It’s easy to agree with the comments, especially by Chad. Paice sounds sooo good. There was no one like Blackmore.
May 17th, 2016 at 17:31Finally! Acceptable video synchronized to spectacular audio from a CRUSHING performance!!
May 17th, 2016 at 18:02I wonder when this entire show will be released? It must be out there somewhere.
May 17th, 2016 at 18:14Great! Cool solo from Ritchie!
May 17th, 2016 at 18:33That tour was one of the greatest moments in the history of mankind.. Five of the best musicians on earth at their peak..
“Wonderful” what else can I say ? Words are not enough to express my admiration ..
If I was able to step back in time , the japanese tour of Deep Purple in 1972 is definitely one of the moments in history I’d choose to be ..
I even remember what I was doing that day , because August 15 is my birthday , and August 15 1972, was a special B-Day for me 🙂
Long Live Deep Purple MK II !!!
May 17th, 2016 at 19:26Too bad the interviews were stuck in at the end.

May 17th, 2016 at 21:07What´s so special about it? It´s only a clip from the documentary that came with the MIJ box set in 2014 really. No new footage.
May 17th, 2016 at 21:33Clever edit. Leaves one hungry for more…..

May 17th, 2016 at 22:34#8 Buy it! Don’t expect to see more than what is on this DVD. http://www.amazon.com/Made-Japan-Deep-Purple/dp/B00PGECK6M/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1463527136&sr=8-6&keywords=made+in+japan+deep+purple
May 17th, 2016 at 23:34I am confused… this was released a year or so ago in the 5 disc box set. Am I missing something?
May 18th, 2016 at 06:56@11
I´ve checked with Simon Robinson, only 40 minutes in total of footage exist. Of course the MIJ documentary had only about 20…

@26
The New York concert was filmed on video tape. Once they edited the masters they reused the tape.
