Rival Sons to support Purple
California band Rival Sons will be supporting Deep Purple on all dates of the European tour this Fall.
In my opinion, this is a rather welcome addition to the bill. I’ve seen Rival Sons at a small club in my home town last year and the band’s music has a definitive vintage hard rock vibe to it. I’d like to encourage everybody who will see that tour not to skip the opening act and check them out.
rather welcome? they’re the best rock band out there right now 😉
May 22nd, 2015 at 17:37Good choice but surely Purple are risking being upstaged, saw Skynyrd support Purple years ago and they blew Purple off the stage but I suppose it helps fill the venue.
May 22nd, 2015 at 17:47Agreed Steve, I was at the NEC with Skynyrd and they were by far the better band.
May 22nd, 2015 at 17:53you can say that the raw of relatively unknown rock n roll band trying to make a name for themselves as compared to an experienced old band like Deep Purple which always managed to put a good professional show! The band members are pushing in their late 60’s and still are rocking like no other band.Purple would upstage all the band back in teh 70’s and 80’s but it is not the same energy coming from a new band.,and they don’t see it in the same outlook as you guys.
May 22nd, 2015 at 18:39Southern rock bands bored to tears!
May 22nd, 2015 at 18:40Given Purple’s reputation for dreadful support acts (in the UK at least) this is an improvement!
May 22nd, 2015 at 19:07Better then DP imho, when it comes to classic rock show & powerful vocals.….If they had a few well know classics on their name, it would be a double bill.
May 22nd, 2015 at 19:48Wish they were on the U.S. dates. Great band!
May 22nd, 2015 at 21:56Very much agree. If you skip them now, you will be sorry later.
May 22nd, 2015 at 22:27Excellent news! Rival Sons’ CDs “Head Down” from late 2012 and “Great Western Valkyrie” from 2014 are very very good. You can hear their blues and 70’s rock roots, and they can really jam too. They are good band that are still learning their craft, so it is not as if they will blow Deep Purple off the stage. I think they will learn a thing or two from the Purps.
In fact I think this pairing will be beneficial for both bands. Rival Sons get a lot, and I mean a lot of coverage in Classic Rock Magazine. The spinoff on this pairing will by extension mean that Classic Rock will be covering Deep Purple a lot more in future.
A good young up and coming band like this will keep Deep Purple on their toes during this upcoming tour. I’m sure the Purps will respond well by firing their game up a notch or two. I think those shows have the potential to be outstanding.
This is a very welcome development. A symbiotic relationship that will mutually benefit both bands in terms of exposure, and creativity. Watch how this might stimulate the songwriting process in the Purple camp too!
May 23rd, 2015 at 00:01Sounds great !!!
May 23rd, 2015 at 00:25I’m happy for the European fans, is there any word on supporting acts for the purple in the states this summer?
May 23rd, 2015 at 01:23Rival Sons lyrics are weak, the singer has a great voice, and he can get away with the lyric, I gotta secret I know you can keep it, cuz he has a great voice, I saw them last week in NYC, I was not blown away. … Purple will not be blown off the stage.
May 23rd, 2015 at 01:53They sound great
May 23rd, 2015 at 02:22Too bad they aren’t opening for them for the US leg of their tour. Rival Sons is already huge in the UK and Europe, unfortunately here in the US they are pretty much little-known.
May 23rd, 2015 at 03:10It’s a shame because they are outstanding and have incredible potential to become a major act. Jay is one the finest vocalists I have heard since the 1970’s. Excellent range, power, and deep soulful ability.
Seeing them next week in San Francisco.
About friggin time they get a real act to open for them…DP needs to bring their A game!!
May 23rd, 2015 at 06:00Naw, this makes two THS Rival Sons supporters, not just one. This is a conspiracy but a good choice for Purple.
May 23rd, 2015 at 16:34Dain Ryan is the band you were talking about earlier this week?
May 24th, 2015 at 04:06Did someone say my name 🙂
May 24th, 2015 at 04:16Yep go see them. Killer Band!
May 24th, 2015 at 04:17Watch out Europe, here I come! (I wish)
May 24th, 2015 at 04:18Skynyrd never blew Purple off the stage – saw skynyrd twice opening for Purple they were boring …
May 24th, 2015 at 11:16Good choice,
May 24th, 2015 at 12:35I’m surprised indeed that they’re not bigger in the US.
They have a great Zeppelin/Doors vibe
Watch the Rival Sons and Glenn Hughes here:

@12 I think I read that Nazareth is opening some US dates for Purple??
May 24th, 2015 at 12:38Great young band, perfect for supporting purple.
May 24th, 2015 at 14:05Sorry guys, I don’t understand all this buzz around Rival Sons. Listen to their cd “Great Western Valkyrie” today and for my opinion just a poor version of Zeppelin. Some songs are really very similar to LZ. No chance that this band will compete with Purple’s performance on upcoming tour.
May 25th, 2015 at 07:11Saw them at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ last year. Killer band! There is hope for “passing the torch” (Lordy quote) with what has been abysmal noise i.e. state of music for the past few decades.
Check out The Answer out of Northern Ireland. Same new league of hard rock & blues fare from the beloved late ’60’s and ’70’s.
Just a few opinions…. :>
Peace,

Well i wasn’t going to bother however whoever it was that suggested Rival Sons join them has just added a good few to the gate having seen them twice before they are a superb live band and could perhaps be better than the headline act if they have anything other than a very good night
May 26th, 2015 at 21:38I don’t know what the rave about Rival Sons ‘blowing Purple off stage’ is all about! Seriously, they are an ok band, but not that great to my ears. They would need to step up more than a few notches me thinks! In regards to support bands upstaging the main act, I think I remember that happening back in 1978, with Van Halen supporting Sabbath. Apparently they were getting ‘more attention’ so to speak, Sabbath were tired & predictable & Osbourne was shot vocally amongst other things! So it can happen. But not here with Purple & Rival Sons. Nothing to fear, all is good! What was it Blackmore said all those years ago, I will wipe the floor with them or something like that! That may have been in reference to other guitarists. We may as well add it to this rave! Why not? Purple wipes the floor with Rival sons! Cheers.
