May 14th, 2014 at 18:26Hmmm, good work 🙂
May 14th, 2014 at 18:42Are my eyes deceiving me or is that footage of the Machine Head sessions at 4:20 and earlier also??!!?
May 14th, 2014 at 18:46Good…. very good!!!
May 14th, 2014 at 18:49Excellent! Now it can be ‘re-released 🙂
May 14th, 2014 at 19:48All right
It is in fact an interesting clip.
I can recognize various video surces, that have appeared in some way before:
Copenhagen 1972
Hofstra 1973
Japan 1972
Hamburg 1970
Fireball writing sessions
and glimpses of what I beleive are Montreux 1971 (floating around in youtube for some time now) and pop deux 1970
However, there is also studio footage from what I beleive is Musicland 1975 Come Taste teh Band recording sessions and, as a matetr of fact, the actual recording sessions of Machine Head. There was a post a while ago in the DP Overseas facebook page stating that 8 mm video of the recording of Machine head was rumoured to exist…maybe they really found this footage!
May 14th, 2014 at 19:54Wow – how much more footage is around?
May 14th, 2014 at 20:43Beautiful.

May 15th, 2014 at 05:24Good trainspotting! I recognised all that as well (with added smoke effect of course). The ‘Musicland’ footage is just a clip from the PAL Lifespan documentary. Does anyone else know more info on the Machine Head sessions footage? Duration, with sound or not?
What’s the point now. There over the hill. There all living off jon and ritchies achievements. Its about time to call it a day lads. Especially mr gillan. Im afraid his voice has now gone. Bring in glenn Hughes to sing..
May 15th, 2014 at 10:35Mash-up of Historic footage. Nice!
May 15th, 2014 at 12:24PAL sessions too.
May 15th, 2014 at 12:42John Trott..Listen to the latest album….And then,stop Whining……And as for Gillan,if you was 68-years of age,how would you sound….Bagger of Troll! 🙁
May 15th, 2014 at 14:17@1 Try this: 😉 http://www.proxfree.com/
May 15th, 2014 at 16:10@9,
thanks Scott for the PAl footage clarification…Yes I also thought it coud have been PAL footage. In the Phoenix Rising DVD however there are more clips of what I beleive is DP Mk IV in the studio…
May 16th, 2014 at 13:46I could only find 2 little pieces of “evidence” of Machine Head sessions footage, both from the DP (O) facebook: one post stating that footage from that sessions were rumoured to exist, the other post stating that a new documentary about the album was being prepared by EDEL.
Nothing more though.
A few years ago I made a Video on SOTW using footage from
Hofstra ’73 concert
Classic albums DVD
A Journey in Rock DVD
and put it on youtube.
Here’s the link:

Enjoy and have a nice day!
May 16th, 2014 at 16:35Upon further viewing and contacting a few well known DP related authors/contributors and getting their opinions, it seems that the Machine Head session clips are faked. I wish that this was not the case as i got quite excited by it myself! I’m still not 100% sure that they are fake, but it appears someone went thru the trouble to make Didi Zill’s photos appear to move! There is even a color clip that lasts for 1 second of ‘someone’ playing a Strat, but his finger technique does not seem to look like RB’s technique. I could be wrong…? If anyone else care’s enough to comment I welcome their input!
May 16th, 2014 at 18:48Scott, the footage appears as really moving to me as well. In the first seconds of the clip, you see Paice wearing the red t shirt with the rainbow across it that he was using in the time of Mk IV. ALso Martin Birch is there, and that is why I beleived it was footage from Mk IV in Musicland.,
May 16th, 2014 at 19:59In the footage section starting at around 4:20, I beleive I can see Paice moving his arms while drumming. Like you, I’m still not 100% sure that they are fake. Plus, we have the statement from the DP (O) itself that I mentioned in my earlier posts. The section of Gillan captured from behind while working on lyrics is quite real as well. The problem is that the scenes last for less than a second in most cases, so it is difficult to see real movement.
At 4:44, the “camera” is lifting and changing pointing angle, revealing details behind Gillan´s notebook. I think there is the prrof that the footage or maybe a restagement is real.
May 16th, 2014 at 20:16If there wasn’t an ‘official’ video clip released back in the day, how can one turn up now? A ‘lost’ tape perhaps, stolen or maybe a record company holding onto it? I am not even going to watch this at all! I have never known of a video clip for this song ever, period! It does make you wonder. Cheers.
May 16th, 2014 at 22:08It is mostly material from Scandinavian Nights 🙁
May 25th, 2014 at 08:58Great video.
Can anyone clarify at last: In what hotel was Machine Head recorded?
In the video they show the Palace Hotel, I thought it was the Suisse Majestic, further down the road.
Please anyone advice! Thanks
p.s.: I met Steve Morse at the Palace, they stayed there during the last concert at Montreux Jazz.
May 25th, 2014 at 10:31@22
We ended up at the “Grand Hotel”,
May 25th, 2014 at 21:12It was empty cold and bare….
Rob, Machine Head was recorded at the Grand Hotel in nearby Territet, the building is opposite the first railway station to the east of Montreux. It was converted to apartments in the nineties. If you listen closely as IG introduces When A Blind Man Cries during the Montreux ’96 DVD, you’ll hear him discussing it with Jon.

The Montreux ’71 footage is faked. Although b&w CCTV monitors were used by Martin Birch, no film was loaded.

August 5th, 2014 at 15:29Nigel are you 100% sure?
The DP(O) said a few years ago that 8mm footage is rumoured to exist. I´m not an expert, but I think CCTV is not 8mm. Or was it?
