Smoke on the Water is in the quarterfinals of the Ultimate Classic Rock’s March Riff Madness playoffs. It’s pitted against the Ace of Spades and so far is losing 2:1. Final whistle will blow on Sunday, March 16 at 11:59PM EDT. One can vote multiple times once an hour. You know what to do.

March 12th, 2014 at 11:19The video settings are quiet different. Purple in a gymnasium-type Plane Jane setting while the Motorhead video has all the glitz of a light show. That said–no song is more recognizable and inspired more guitarists than “Smoke.” This should be a no brain’ er.
March 12th, 2014 at 11:24Hard to believe it’s even close, even harder to believe is that ‘Waste of Spades’ is that far ahead. I am voting but it doesn’t look good for ‘Smoke’. For whatever reason, Lemmy and Motorhead are very popular among the Metal crowd and it is obvious the popularity of the song or band is coming into play here in the voting process instead of the ‘Riff’ factor. There is no defining Riff in the Motorhead thrash.
I’m voting, but it’s up against ‘Hell or High Water’. VOTE as often as you can.

March 12th, 2014 at 14:11The caption above states it’s a 2 to 1 margin but it is much closer than that. 57% to 42% is where it is right now which is more like a 5 to 3.5 margin. It’s not out of reach by any means if the folks here jump on the vote wagon.
Arguing over Burn vs Smoke is a ‘smoke screen’. Non related and non productive. Stay focused and VOTE every hour!!!

And then I read this interview with Brian saying he was flabbergasted having found out that everything Motorhead music was written down!!!
So he suggested it was not just bashing away on the guitar but a well wrought composition. 🙁
I always had great respect for then (over the )Rainbow FanClan but was apalled to read in the fanzine:

I have voted around 15 times. It’s almost over. Looks like a loser for Smoke. They should have used a less dated version for the video. Maybe the one from the ‘Come Hell or High Water’ DVD. I bet most people voted based on the video instead of the RIFF criteria.
