Setlist poll — Now what?! edition
Members of the band alluded in the interviews that a new setlist will be rehearsed before touring starts in earnest with more songs from Now what?! incorporated into it. Ofcourse, we all want the whole album played live. But let’s be realistic optimistic and, say, they will pick 6 songs.
Now, which ones?
There’s no guarantee that anybody will listen, but here’s a chance to voice your opinion.
Poll closes at 23:59 UTC on Monday, May 13. You’ll need Javascript and cookies enabled to vote (most browsers do that by default).

If the Frantic Four could do Blue Eyed Lady which had NEVER been played live before, then DP can do something similar.
May 7th, 2013 at 21:03If i was asked to select the set it would probably be looking something like this
Uncommon Man.
Hard Lovin Man.
Strange Kind of Woman.
Fireball.
Don solo.
Weirdistan.
Lazy.
Perfect Strangers.
Space Truckin.
Apres Vous.
Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming.
Contact Lost/The Well Dressed Guitar.
Vincent Price.
Highway Star.
Smoke on the Water.
Encore:
A Simple Song.
Hush.
Hell To Pay.
Black Night.
So, we have here something from the new album, and some well known hits to sing along to. would be great fun if they would do this or at least something like this :).
Chears!!
May 7th, 2013 at 21:24Before I vote, I want the band to know that I wouldn’t mind more Don Airey era Deep Purple.
One example, “Things I Never Said” should be brought back for the next tour.
May 7th, 2013 at 21:31One of the best tunes they’ve ever done live.
I think it’s time ‘Well Dressed Guitar’ was retired. Surely Stev can come up with something different for his solo spot? I’d love to see a big chunk of the new album in the set list, not the same old stuff.
May 7th, 2013 at 21:41One song you don’t want in the set list is All The Time In The World. you would possibly fall asleep, it is not a ‘live’ song at all, it has that plodding tempo, that sort of goes no where. A good song it is, but I couldn’t see that coming off in concert. Vincent Price definitely!
May 7th, 2013 at 21:50Well, since Ian is singing so damn good on the Now What!? album, I would love to see Child in Time in the setlist again=)
May 7th, 2013 at 22:08A Simple Song must be a live opener, with no doubt!
other choices:
Hell to Pay
Out of Hand
Uncommon Man
Apres Vous
Vincent Price (What a song, man, what a song)
What about the ballad, play Clearly Quite Absurd – the best ballad DP has ever done since Blind Man… If you want Airey to play at his best, just let him play CQA
May 7th, 2013 at 22:394
King Of Dreams had that same trait and went big in a live version.
May 7th, 2013 at 22:49@4 amen to that ,I always found that ballads like “Wasted Sunsets”,Clearly quiet Absurd ” Sometimes I feel like….. didn’t translate too well live!
May 8th, 2013 at 00:26” It feels so good to be afraid, Deep Purple is back again!!!! “………. VINCENT PRICE IS DEEP PURPLE!!!!!
May 8th, 2013 at 01:16It did ok with the first four but it dropped from there. Can’t believe “Weirdistan” is that far down with such dynamic solos. I would also welcome “Uncommon Man” as a set opener.
May 8th, 2013 at 06:34@2 – very nice, brave set. I would go even further on this street of dreams and my dream set for Now What!? Tour would be like this:
1. Bad Attitude / Knocking At Your Backdoor
2. A Simple Song
3. Weirdistan
4. Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming / Loosen My Strings
5. Pictures Of Home / Black Night
6. Don Airey Solo
7. Vincent Price
8. Hell To Pay > Improv (segues to…)
9. ’69 / Cascades
10. Steve Morse Solo
11. Uncommon Man
12. Fingers To The Bone / Not Responsible / Wasted Sunsets
13. Picture Of Innocence / Rapture Of The Deep / Out Of Hand
14. Anya / Speed King
Encore 1:
15. Bloodsucker / Hush / Woman From Tokyo
16. Perfect Strangers
Encore 2:
17. Hush / Black Night / Into The Fire
18. Strange Kind Of Woman / Smoke On The Water / Highway Star
The lines with / are interchangeable tracks, so every night provides something different and suprise for each audience. Plus it heavily represents Steve and Don.
May 8th, 2013 at 08:11I – personally! – would love it this way!
ted and speed king have to be on there
May 8th, 2013 at 08:24I am very curious about the setlist at the WACKEN open air festival.
Its a metal festival and I wish it will be an other setlist than normaly.
I hope it a lot harder then other gigs.
I wish it will be a hardrock-mix of IN ROCK – FIREBALL -MACHINE HEAD – NOW WHAT -songs…
Much different to the normal setlists they played !!
I (its only me) wish … 🙂
But I am realistic enough, that it will not happend. 🙁

They should play two sets.1. the entire Now What2. the old stuff.
May 8th, 2013 at 17:58To me the best song for a drum solo is Chasing shadows.DP will play in Bonn, July 14th. This is my 30th DP concert. My first?
Two weeks after my 13th bithday DP played in my hometown Duisburg, Germany, Nov. 30th 1970, just two kilometers from my home, supported by Ashton, Gardner & Dyke. But I wasn´t allowed to see them!
On Jan.24th 1973 they played in Essen, 25 kilometers from my home. But that day was my mother´s birthday, and I wasn´t allwed to go. But I did!!! They played theMIJ stuff plus Mary Long. The black god smashed 3 guitars. Later that night my father awaited me… What a day!
Uncommon man would now be a great set opener. lets get more later stuff in the set list
May 8th, 2013 at 18:07Here is I think the set list: It’s greatest hits and Now What ONLY. (No time for the obscure IG)
Highway Star (best opener ever)
Hell To Pay (keep the fast vibe going)

6 New Songs sandwhiched around the usual bits and pieces. That is as good a compromise set as you are likely to get. I like hearing stuff like Hard Lovin Man live as much as the next hard core fan…but focus on the hits and the new stuff.
May 8th, 2013 at 18:36Aprez Vous so low on the list?
For me together with Uncommon Man and Vincent Price the best Now What?! tune that should be played live…

May 9th, 2013 at 01:23There are so many strong tracks (all of them!!) on the new album, so it’s going to be a good challenge for the band to come up with a setlist to include the old and the new! ‘Vincent Price’ would be the perfect closer with the scream at the end!
May 9th, 2013 at 01:44I like the setlist in response 12.
May 9th, 2013 at 05:09Could I just point out that the percentage figures quoted in the above poll don’t make any sense at all?
May 9th, 2013 at 07:41You can ask 500 people for a setlist and you will get 500 different ones!
May 9th, 2013 at 09:00@30 Because each individual can choose up to 6 songs the maximum percentage of all the songs added together is 600%, currently it is around 530% so most people are choosing the maximum number of songs.
May 9th, 2013 at 09:24Vincent Price, Hell to Pay and Uncommon Man will I guess be in the set list until they call it a day.
Hopefully they make one last studio album before they do, this album shows they still have something to offer the music world.
I like 12 too if they could go for 3.5 hours. 🙂
May 9th, 2013 at 14:29If I could hand-pick the entire set-list myself, with tracks from ‘relevant’ time periods to accommodate the current lineup…. (“>” signifies a jam sessions bridging two songs together. Bear with me, I’m going a bit renegade with this and doing the whole “Grateful Dead” thing with the set, as far as bridging tracks with instrumental segues and what have you. 😉 )

I really hope that they will play as many songs as possible from Now What?! It’s their best album since the 70s/ Perfect Strangers/ Purpendicular, and it really deserves to be played live. I mean…. A “standard rocker” like Hell To Pay is kinda “average” when you hear the single version, but the album version is “Deep Purple 2000 meets Deep Purple 1970” because of Aireys solo. Sounds like something that could’ve happend during Mandrake Root/ CiT / Wring That Neck in the old days. Now What?! is filled with “modern day Purple meets old day Purple”, and I really, really LOVE the record! I wasn’t expecting them, at their age, to come up with a record this great…..but they did!!!
I’ll eat, drink and breathe Purple for years to come! This band is the soundtrack to my life, and I’m proud to say to the world: I’M A FAN BY HEART!
May 9th, 2013 at 22:23All of the above – but how did you all miss out Rosa’s Cantina???????
Great Party Track!
Speed King will ‘Morph’ into Highways star quite nicely (We’ve done it ourselves) I’d like it if tracks blended into each other & back again.
Very Blackmorian!
May 9th, 2013 at 22:39First post, long time follower of THS and the blogs…
Am I the only one that finds Bodyline the most catchy tune you’ve heard in a while? I can’t stop playing this track. When Roger kicks in with the bass… tasty stuff.
Unrelated, have you caught the ad (America only I’m assuming) for a phone and tablet with the kids playing Smoke? Funny stuff.
Cheers, Chris
May 10th, 2013 at 00:46@29, @33
Contrary to what you might think I tried to be realistic and consider that 2 hours is maximum space that DP can take the stage for at their age. So after calculating approximately, slight changes and installing ‘Apres Vous’, which I’d love to hear @12 would look like this:
2′ 0. Bach Fugue Introduction (like in 1985, as a tribute to Jon)
7′ 1. Bad Attitude / Knocking At Your Backdoor
7′ 2. Apres Vous
6′ 3. A Simple Song
6′ 4. Weirdistan
8′ 5. Pictures Of Home / Black Night
5′ 6. Don Airey Solo
6′ 7. Vincent Price
10′ 8. Hell To Pay > Improv >
4′ 9. > ’69 / Cascades >
4′ 10. > Steve Morse Solo >
8′ 11. > Uncommon Man
7′ 12. Fingers To The Bone / Not Responsible / Wasted Sunsets / Loosen My Strings
7′ 13. Picture Of Innocence / Rapture Of The Deep / Out Of Hand
10′ 14. Anya / Speed King
SET: ~ 97′
Encore 1:
7′ 15. Bloodsucker / Hush / Fireball – Into The Fire / Strange Kind Of Woman
7′ 16. Perfect Strangers
Encore 2:
7′ 17. Hush / Black Night / Smoke On The Water / Highway Star
ENCORES: ~ 21′
This CAN BE actually done around 2 hours a gig. Plenty of moods and tempos shifts, good cut through whole career, strong set of ‘Now What !?’ selections plus solo spots and improvs to give each member a bit of break here and there. It’s realistic IMHO.
May 10th, 2013 at 06:18@38 I was told by “T” of the commercial. Looking forward to checking it out. I did see the “Twister” movie with Helen Hunt. Classic tune in the beginning!!! Jag commercial on Fox News played “Hush”…that was a treat too. I bet 95% of the viewers do not know the group who made those tunes…..
May 10th, 2013 at 12:26I went for Out of Hand, BodyLine, Aprés Vous, Blood from a Stone and Hell to Pay – in that order. Couldn’t settle on a sixth song, the rest of the songs all make fine candidates.
On top of that I would like to see at least two or three Morse-era songs in the set list. Ted the Mechanic, I Got Your Number, Doing it Tonight and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye spring to mind.
May 10th, 2013 at 13:03Here’s my current “dream” setlist:

May 10th, 2013 at 14:23They should have the strength to play much from the Morse-Lineup, plus some oscure (but good) old songs! Like:
1. Lazy
2. Bananas

Total playing time would be probably around 2 hrs 15 minutes. Now what!?
The new album is pretty awesome and these new songs deserves to be played as much as possible. The first ‘reunion’ album I’ve enjoyed listening to over and over again ever since I bought it on day one. The previous attempts took me a long time to listen to for a second or third time. For example I still have to give Abandon a second full run. Now What is not a grower but a killer!!!
They should tour this album for a year, playing only the big arenas and than returning to the studio right away and record another great album with Bob.
Now What is an impressive album from an even more impressive band.
1’Bad Attitude (Slightly revamped)
2′ Bloodsucker
3′ Demons Eye
4′ Time to Kill
5′ Apres Vous
6′ Body Line
7′ Place in Line
8′ Wasted Sunsets
9′ Mad Dog
10′ Might Just Take Your Life ( :-))
11′ Cascades
12′ Castle Full of Rascals
13′ Vincent Price
14′ Hush
15′ Black Night
16′ Smoke
Chris Blackmore.., you’re not alone, I love Body Line too.
May 10th, 2013 at 19:04@37
Look again. I mentioned a Rosa’s Cantina into Bodyline in my setlist , response #34. I agree with you about Rosa’s Cantina, I love that song!
@39
I agree with you. I love when bands throw tracks together. Grateful Dead did this all the time. I’m equal parts metal and “jam band” / “hippie,” so Deep Purple is the ultimate combination of what I like of all the genres. They have improvisation, speed, and a cinematic quality and heaviness most jam bands ignore, while also having the live improv quality most metal bands ignore.
In other words, Deep Purple is the only legit Metal band that frequently extends tracks with improvised sections in a live setting. Not that I’m saying Deep Purple is metal, but I’d argue a few of their albums most definitely are metal. And I think their influence on the genre is equivalent to Black Sabbaths. (I’d actually say Deep Purples impact was even MORE profound.)
May 10th, 2013 at 21:30I’d settle for them permanently dropping anything recorded before 1984 from the setlist, except the obvious SOTW, Hush and WFT. Of course I also hope they never drop Well Dressed Guitar, because it shows off their instrumental talents so well. Any strong mix of post-reunion tracks, with a heavy emphasis on Mk-Morse material would be fine with me.
May 11th, 2013 at 03:55@47
As I said in my first setlist attempt – the songs in one line are not medley sections, but “/” sign I read as OR – the tracks are exchangable – so the setlist differ nicely every night – which could be upkeeping to the excitement of playing instead of doing the same set every night. I know it takes a bit more work to reheasre couple of more songs, but they have played it all, didn’t they.
I like jam bands but I always hated medleys. I didn’t like it when Queen did it, I’m glad Purple and Rainbow hardly ever did them, although Ritchie had tendency to play only “bits” of songs. When you have a good tune, it’s nice to play more trhan only chunk of it – so no particular medleys in my dream-set!
May 11th, 2013 at 09:1647
Which albums are metal? I dont think there is one.
Btw, the improvisationfactor in this particular line up is highly exaggerated.
A child can hear that most of the show is the same every night.
May 11th, 2013 at 09:51-As mentioned by some, there are some tracks from previous Morse-era that has yet to be given its due recognition. two one track that come to remembrance is “Sun Goes Down.” Here is a track that can interpolate some creative interpolation on stage, but sadly none. here is a set list I hope the band may consider:

Rascal @54….
Great idea except only 14 songs. Add some more MK7/8 tunes.
Priest @55….
When I’m thirsty and in need of a brew while being entertained at a concert, I wait for the moment that I feel I won’t miss something I want to see or hear. Then I rush to the bar and snag it and rush back. Plus the lines are shorter once the show starts and the wait isn’t as long. Same as when I head to the lue. A friend of mine is so intense about not leaving his seat at concerts or ball games that he doesn’t drink anything and he actually wears depends and just lets it go right there so he doesn’t have to get up. After the show or game, he stops by the restroom and throws the depends in the trash. You might try that yourself since you seem so hardcore about not missing one note at a show….
Renzo @58….
That’s actually a really good and reasonable set….

May 16th, 2013 at 15:24Since people (and so am i), are willing to see, and hear more Morse era tunes in the set, i’ve come up with my own variation of what i think could be a great set of songs.

surprisingly fresh every other show, and nothing that comes even close to the greatest hits show they played on for years now, tho some a surely not forgotten.
I would like see them play a set like this ^^.

I would if only I had a show to go to.
Very picky nowadays.
But in general I try not to drink too much indeed.
At some gigs I experienced enough space to walk back and forth in the location without being afraid not being able to get back in front.
But thats mainly the clubcircuit, not the bigger halls.
Leaving the hall would imply I d have to make choices about which part I want to miss or not.
May 18th, 2013 at 10:09In general when a gig /a band is really for me I dont leave the frontline position.
At a general admission gig where I have a good position and would lose that spot by leaving, I will hold tight. But if I have reserved seats that are mine, I have no problem stepping out at the right time to grab a brew or drain the lizard. Plus usually you can hear the music while in line…..

I agree about those particular tunes you mentioned but “When a Blind Man Cries” is a powerful ballad that does do well live IMHO. Would you agree? I hate to sound like a broken record but music is so subjective that it is hard to please everyone. As a consequence, I have always hated the list things like the top 10 Purple tunes or their top 10 guitar solos, etc. Just one thing is always start with a rocker and always end with a rocker.
May 26th, 2013 at 19:31I Love this record, I felt like when I was about to listen Perfect Strangers, with that high hopes.
I do believe that Apres Vous MUST be in the setlist, and best as the opener, what a powerful song.
May 28th, 2013 at 03:36Vincent Price, Hell to pay, Uncommon Man, and maybe Body Line
From the past I think they could do some highlights of gillan’s career,
Highway Star, Smoke on The Water, Into the Fire, Strange Kind Of Woman, Woman from Tokio, Lazy, Black Night, Perfect Strangers, Knocking at Your Back Door, The Battle Rages On, Ted The Mechanic, Bananas and Rapture of the Deep.
Anyway, anyone is well received. . . .Just Come to America!
Last time I saw them was in 2007, In 2011 they went to Mexico
so I took the plane with my daughter just to find that they changed the date of the gig. We hope we can catch them twice this time !!
Space truckin’
Hard lovin’ man
Hell to pay
Apres vous
Pictures of home
Fireball
All the time in the world
Rapture of the deep
Uncommon man
A simple song
Lazy
Knockin’ at your back door
