Setlist poll — Now what?! edition
Members of the band alluded in the interviews that a new setlist will be rehearsed before touring starts in earnest with more songs from Now what?! incorporated into it. Ofcourse, we all want the whole album played live. But let’s be realistic optimistic and, say, they will pick 6 songs.
Now, which ones?

May 7th, 2013 at 21:41One song you don’t want in the set list is All The Time In The World. you would possibly fall asleep, it is not a ‘live’ song at all, it has that plodding tempo, that sort of goes no where. A good song it is, but I couldn’t see that coming off in concert. Vincent Price definitely!

Its a metal festival and I wish it will be an other setlist than normaly.
I hope it a lot harder then other gigs.
I wish it will be a hardrock-mix of IN ROCK – FIREBALL -MACHINE HEAD – NOW WHAT -songs…
Much different to the normal setlists they played !!
I (its only me) wish … 🙂
But I am realistic enough, that it will not happend. 🙁

Two weeks after my 13th bithday DP played in my hometown Duisburg, Germany, Nov. 30th 1970, just two kilometers from my home, supported by Ashton, Gardner & Dyke. But I wasn´t allowed to see them!
On Jan.24th 1973 they played in Essen, 25 kilometers from my home. But that day was my mother´s birthday, and I wasn´t allwed to go. But I did!!! They played theMIJ stuff plus Mary Long. The black god smashed 3 guitars. Later that night my father awaited me… What a day!

Hopefully they make one last studio album before they do, this album shows they still have something to offer the music world.

(“>” signifies a jam sessions bridging two songs together. Bear with me, I’m going a bit renegade with this and doing the whole “Grateful Dead” thing with the set, as far as bridging tracks with instrumental segues and what have you. 😉 )

I really hope that they will play as many songs as possible from Now What?! It’s their best album since the 70s/ Perfect Strangers/ Purpendicular, and it really deserves to be played live. I mean…. A “standard rocker” like Hell To Pay is kinda “average” when you hear the single version, but the album version is “Deep Purple 2000 meets Deep Purple 1970” because of Aireys solo. Sounds like something that could’ve happend during Mandrake Root/ CiT / Wring That Neck in the old days. Now What?! is filled with “modern day Purple meets old day Purple”, and I really, really LOVE the record! I wasn’t expecting them, at their age, to come up with a record this great…..but they did!!!
I’ll eat, drink and breathe Purple for years to come! This band is the soundtrack to my life, and I’m proud to say to the world: I’M A FAN BY HEART!

This CAN BE actually done around 2 hours a gig. Plenty of moods and tempos shifts, good cut through whole career, strong set of ‘Now What !?’ selections plus solo spots and improvs to give each member a bit of break here and there. It’s realistic IMHO.

Jag commercial on Fox News played “Hush”…that was a treat too. I bet 95% of the viewers do not know the group who made those tunes…..
May 10th, 2013 at 12:26I went for Out of Hand, BodyLine, Aprés Vous, Blood from a Stone and Hell to Pay – in that order. Couldn’t settle on a sixth song, the rest of the songs all make fine candidates.
On top of that I would like to see at least two or three Morse-era songs in the set list. Ted the Mechanic, I Got Your Number, Doing it Tonight and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye spring to mind.

The new album is pretty awesome and these new songs deserves to be played as much as possible. The first ‘reunion’ album I’ve enjoyed listening to over and over again ever since I bought it on day one. The previous attempts took me a long time to listen to for a second or third time. For example I still have to give Abandon a second full run. Now What is not a grower but a killer!!!
They should tour this album for a year, playing only the big arenas and than returning to the studio right away and record another great album with Bob.
Now What is an impressive album from an even more impressive band.

I agree with you. I love when bands throw tracks together. Grateful Dead did this all the time. I’m equal parts metal and “jam band” / “hippie,” so Deep Purple is the ultimate combination of what I like of all the genres. They have improvisation, speed, and a cinematic quality and heaviness most jam bands ignore, while also having the live improv quality most metal bands ignore.
In other words, Deep Purple is the only legit Metal band that frequently extends tracks with improvised sections in a live setting. Not that I’m saying Deep Purple is metal, but I’d argue a few of their albums most definitely are metal. And I think their influence on the genre is equivalent to Black Sabbaths. (I’d actually say Deep Purples impact was even MORE profound.)
May 10th, 2013 at 21:30I’d settle for them permanently dropping anything recorded before 1984 from the setlist, except the obvious SOTW, Hush and WFT. Of course I also hope they never drop Well Dressed Guitar, because it shows off their instrumental talents so well. Any strong mix of post-reunion tracks, with a heavy emphasis on Mk-Morse material would be fine with me.

As I said in my first setlist attempt – the songs in one line are not medley sections, but “/” sign I read as OR – the tracks are exchangable – so the setlist differ nicely every night – which could be upkeeping to the excitement of playing instead of doing the same set every night. I know it takes a bit more work to reheasre couple of more songs, but they have played it all, didn’t they.
I like jam bands but I always hated medleys. I didn’t like it when Queen did it, I’m glad Purple and Rainbow hardly ever did them, although Ritchie had tendency to play only “bits” of songs. When you have a good tune, it’s nice to play more trhan only chunk of it – so no particular medleys in my dream-set!

Both “A Simple Song” and “And The Address” would be good openers. I don’t know how these tunes would interact if both played one after the other. When I’m thirsty and in need of a brew while being entertained at a concert, I wait for the moment that I feel I won’t miss something I want to see or hear. Then I rush to the bar and snag it and rush back. Plus the lines are shorter once the show starts and the wait isn’t as long. Same as when I head to the lue. A friend of mine is so intense about not leaving his seat at concerts or ball games that he doesn’t drink anything and he actually wears depends and just lets it go right there so he doesn’t have to get up. After the show or game, he stops by the restroom and throws the depends in the trash. You might try that yourself since you seem so hardcore about not missing one note at a show….

I would if only I had a show to go to.
Very picky nowadays.
But in general I try not to drink too much indeed.
At some gigs I experienced enough space to walk back and forth in the location without being afraid not being able to get back in front.
But thats mainly the clubcircuit, not the bigger halls.
Leaving the hall would imply I d have to make choices about which part I want to miss or not.

At a general admission gig where I have a good position and would lose that spot by leaving, I will hold tight. But if I have reserved seats that are mine, I have no problem stepping out at the right time to grab a brew or drain the lizard. Plus usually you can hear the music while in line…..

I agree about those particular tunes you mentioned but “When a Blind Man Cries” is a powerful ballad that does do well live IMHO. Would you agree? I hate to sound like a broken record but music is so subjective that it is hard to please everyone. As a consequence, I have always hated the list things like the top 10 Purple tunes or their top 10 guitar solos, etc. Just one thing is always start with a rocker and always end with a rocker.

I do believe that Apres Vous MUST be in the setlist, and best as the opener, what a powerful song.

Last time I saw them was in 2007, In 2011 they went to Mexico
so I took the plane with my daughter just to find that they changed the date of the gig. We hope we can catch them twice this time !!
