Abandon Promotion Interviews
When Abandon was released, the American record company at the time, CMC International, had some idea of radio promotion for the disc. A couple of singles were released and they also produced a bunch of interview clips. The interviews were made like short sound bites you could edit together with appropriate questions from your own DJ, making it sound like your little station got an exclusive interview with the band. Also, allowing the band to spend time on more relevant things than answering the same questions a million times. They are clever, those PR people!
I forgot I had this interview on disc but the other day I found it sitting next to my Abandon CD on the Purple shelf in the basement. As we are getting closer to the release of another Deep Purple CD, I thought it would be interesting to hear how a DP album was promoted 15 years ago. I added some photos from the US tour 1998 and uploaded the thing to YouTube. Enjoy!
PS. As I was looking for photos to use, I found a report we did as some of us behind THS followed the band on that US tour in ’98. It might be because I was involved, but I very much enjoyed being taken back to that great tour. Have a look yourself. You might at least enjoy the pictures!
Unfortunately I get this in Germany (the usual YouTube-GEMA problem):
March 5th, 2013 at 15:37Leider ist dieses Video, das Musik von EMI beinhaltet, in Deutschland nicht verfügbar, da die GEMA die Verlagsrechte hieran nicht eingeräumt hat.
Das tut uns leid.
(This video which includes music from EMI is in Germany not available, because GEMA didn’t admit the rights.
Sorry)
Hm…. Do we recognise this typography?!
March 5th, 2013 at 15:56@1: I know you have such problems in Germany. Have you tried this? http://www.proxfree.com/

March 5th, 2013 at 16:43Good one, from the earlly sound samples thru the concert reviews, Abandon well covered by THS!
March 5th, 2013 at 17:07Nice read…………..felt like I was there, and sorry but we are the junk food capital…ha ha
March 6th, 2013 at 00:30@3 Thanks, it works
March 6th, 2013 at 07:08If Re-Issued/Subsequent Versions of this or any Purple CD contained extra material – I would favour this sort of content over Re-mixes of the songs or studio ‘Out takes’!
Let’s hope for a DVD of the making of the making of the Tea & Crumpets for the crew watching the editing of the making of any future DP CD/DVD – seriously though, If any of us had a time machine, wouldn’t we be among the audiences that saw MiJ performed?? Watching things unfold is part of the joy of experiencing such Creativity! – personally, I would have watched from Off stage handing Ritchie the odd beer. I guess I’m saying, any insight as to how/why things were written performed the way they are/were just enhances the overall enjoyment of this band’s music. Who knows, we might be able to tell ig what his lyrics actually mean – I’m sure he’d be grateful!
March 6th, 2013 at 10:16I just heard David Bowie’s new album.
Inbetween song 2 and 3 one can hear deep Purple like Hammond ecstasy but it fades…………….
Btw. May I recommend Justin Hayward’s new album? It is a DREAM!!!
March 6th, 2013 at 12:36Well, that is emberassing almost :
I found out a youtube called Deep Purple REFLECTIONS had started again in the background.
The bell rang when HUSH was being recognised by me at last : )
He should use Hammond, thats for sure.
March 6th, 2013 at 12:40ABandOn is, at least in my world, a truly great album!!! A lot of great songs, a couple of not so great ones….maybe, but all in all- GREAT ALBUM! Seventh Heaven is one of the best Purple songs ever….in my not so humble opinion of course 🙂
March 6th, 2013 at 23:05@11 funny, but you are right, some great tunes and some really boring ones, but a re-recorded kick ass great version of Bludsucker !
