Jamming in Nashville
While being in Nashville working on the new album, Roger Glover, Ian Paice and Don Airey took part in the benefit show for Jamie Simmons, a local bass player who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident earlier this year. Here they are, with Mike Simmons on Guitar and Greg Mangus singing, at the Mercury Lounge in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 15:

Sorry to state, I wasn’t there. I knew they were in Nashville late June which is a little over an hour from where I reside, but of course had no clue as to where in Nashville. Been a little busy all summer doing some construction on my vacation home and slightly out of touch. I’ve been to the bar where this jam took place though. Saw Malmsteen there a few years back. Wish I knew how long they were staying and recording this record. I figured they were gone by now. Hopefully while they are here recording, they will scope the area for possible concert locations in the future. Some great venues here. They never have come to Nashville since I’ve lived here. Maybe now that they see what a great town it is, they will. Guess I should head there and start searching the local pubs in case they are still there….

Actually it’s long overdue. It’s “Music City” for GOD’s sake! Some the best music and musicians come from and gravitate there. The album should be a really good album just due to the vibe that exists there and will spill over into the studio I truly believe.

July 27th, 2012 at 10:09This is a cool intimate room. My brother lives in Nashville and this is only one of many great spots to catch some great gigs. At one time it was all country and bluegrass. For some time now every genre has set up shop to record. Wasn’t too surprised when Purple announced they were to record there.

July 29th, 2012 at 08:21The singer is a local rock and soul singer named Greg Mangus, not in a band as far as I know, the guitar player is Mike Simmons from Simmonz, used to see his band play around Nashville alot, they did a KILLER version of a Rainbow tune just before this. Bob Ezrin lives here(Nashville) that’s why they were here…..wonderful guys, great night. MC

July 31st, 2012 at 21:43That was a great clip and both singers really did do respectable jobs. I was on that same stage two days earlier, so that made it even more cool for me. I love, love, love Deep Purple.
Malmsteen actually played downstairs in the same building at The Cannery Ballroom a few years back, Tracy. Mercy Lounge (which is what it’s actually called) only holds about 400.
Anyway, one of the main reasons Purple picked Nashville is because we have some incredible studios here. The studio where they’re recording the new album is one of the finest in the nation and all types of artists come here to record at it. Also, and this is the top reason they’re recording here, is that Bob Ezrin, who’s producing the upcoming album, lives here. He and Alice Cooper own a production company here together. Bob recently mixed the new album by The Darkness here as well. Nashville’s definitely moving up in the rock world.

Hopefully since Ezrin lives here and the band spent some time here, they did a good recon of the area and realized there are tons of fine venues to perform live. No reason for them to skip over Nashville anymore. ‘Wild Horse Saloon’ for one would be perfect. Saw UFO, Foreigner, Ted Nugent and JLT with Scrap Metal play there. Great venue, food and drink too. Floor seating and 2 balconies to see the band from front and above. Love the setting.
