Warren Haynes in Amsterdam
Last night in Amsterdam Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule fame joined Deep Purple on stage for a jam over Black Night. Pictures and videos from the show are already surfacing:

Thanks to Fedor de Lange for the illustrated heads up and to Garry1960 for the video.
Excellent Jam indeed. I’m sure Steve and Warren have roots that go way back being from the same neck of the woods. DP just keeps getting better.
November 18th, 2009 at 18:56That was good!
November 18th, 2009 at 20:29So cool! Warren is, to quote Roger, a ‘national treasure’, and in my opinion, one of the very top guitarists alive. With Gov’t Mule they also play, from time to time, Lazy and Maybe I’m a Leo. I would love hearing him with Roger/Paicey!
November 18th, 2009 at 21:14As someone whose #1 band is DP, I got into Gov’t Mule thanks to Roger’s appearance on the Deep End album. They are by far one of the most eclectic bands ever. Warren plays practically any style. I recently saw them perform this past summer in New Jersey and met Warren afterwards. We spoke a little about Roger and he told me that he spoke with Roger that day. A few years back after a DP show I told Roger that I got into the Mule due to him and had purchased every CD and downloaded numerous live shows from their site (www.mule.net). ROger’s comment back was that Warren owes him money then- hopefully Roger got something. THis New Year’s Eve I will be seeing the Mule at the Beacon (usually a 3 1/2 – 4 hour show counting some breaks between sets and numerous guests.) Hopefully this year if the boys in Purple are not doing anything, they can return Warren’s favor and do a few songs on the 31st.
November 18th, 2009 at 23:59If anyone on this site is not familar with Gov’t Mule, they are a band worth hearing and getting into.
Ol’Rog workin the crowd! Great bass solo!
November 19th, 2009 at 06:34I found it very annoying. They both had a great time but for the audience (at least for me) it was way to long a jam. I’m there to see Deep Purple, not some guest of them!
Overall a good show altough I’ve seen better ones. Gillan should stop screaming. He just can’t do it anymore. That no problem, but don’t try. By time she sounded like the singer of ACDC.
Paice was a bit on the back. Why not center stage on a platform?
Too bad they did’t play Speed King. That should have brought soms power to the show.
Highlight for me was No One Came, Hush and Roger!. Also Wring That Neck was nice but they ruined it halfway i think by getting lost in they own jam.

November 19th, 2009 at 06:56Don’t forget that WH has also worked with RG in the past. Back in 2001 RG was asked to guest on Gov’t Mule’s version of “Maybe I’m A Leo” and two years later he also played at the famous New Orleans concert of Gov’t Mule that lasted more than four hours and featured a host of renowned bass players.

Warren played on two tracks on Roger’s Snapshot album.
November 19th, 2009 at 14:34@6. “Deep Purple”, “jam” and “too long” are words that cannot appear together in the same sentence.
Shame on you…… tut tut.
November 19th, 2009 at 14:57Dames, heren ook,
November 19th, 2009 at 17:05De man is 64!!!
Heb al weer kaarten besteld voor Essen en Oldenburg nov. 2010. Hopelijk een tour ter promotie van de langverwachte CD.
I WANT SPEED KING IN THE TRACKLIST!!!I’M GOING TO SEE THEM SOON WITH A FRIEND, NEW FAN, AND THAT SONG WITH WONDERFUL GUITAR ORGAN INTERPLAY AND DRUMS SOLO SHOULD BE IN THE LIST…WE NEED THAT KIND OF JAM AND DRUMS SOLOS!!!
November 19th, 2009 at 19:17…AND I TOTALLY AGREE ABOUT THE PLATFORM…HOPE THEY WILL READ THESE POSTS…
November 19th, 2009 at 19:18@4 I totally agree with you! Gov’t Mule is probably the best band of the last 20 years, in my opinion. I just saw them last week in Italy and I’m still recovering…by the way he also played the Burn riff during as long slide guitar solo!!
November 19th, 2009 at 21:15@9
I agree with you….. as long as it is DEEP PURPLE who is jamming and not some guest I don’t know!

…now you do, Eric. I suggest you check further into him, Government Mule, The(Grateful)Dead, Allman Brothers Band…. need I go on?
November 20th, 2009 at 15:35I heard some young people talking just after the concert. Apparently they didn’t know much of DP, didn’t know names of the guys. But they couldn’t stop talking about their admiration of this bass player. The star of this show.
November 20th, 2009 at 22:42This is what Deep Purple is all about !!!!
November 21st, 2009 at 00:31Warren Haynes is, IMHO, singularly responsible for resurrecting the Allman Brothers Band in 1990, and carrying them forward to this day.
November 21st, 2009 at 01:21Those of you who saw this show had the privilege of seeing 2 of the most influential & productive guitarists (Morse & Haynes) of the last 20 years on the same stage at the same time. Wish I could’ve been there….
2 Steves!!!!
Where did they get the idea!!!!!
Great thinking!!!!
November 21st, 2009 at 12:49Ah, My Main Man continues to leave ego at stage left! Look at all of the banjo players that gotten invited up on stage to play with the Purp’s including that A-H Ynngwie.. Ya gotsta love how Warren was an Allman Bros. aficionado as a school boy only to find himself a member of the band a good number of years later. And of course Steve covering the Purp’s whilst (I’m American) cutting his teeth on a plethora of music as a said school boy.
Hey Blacky, care to share a stage with another banjo player….?
Yeah, right. But I still love ya guy! :>
Peace,
Ted
November 22nd, 2009 at 19:16And shure the Purps could learn a trick or two from Warren & Gov’t Mule: changing 100% the set list every night, tons of jamming every night, a catalogue of (literally) hundreds of songs to choose from every night, the possibility of legally downloading every show from their site, playing ‘special’ concerts, 2 or three times a year with guests, special setlists, etc..that’s the way to do it!
