The Great Wide Open

On June 13 Deep Purple played at the Great Wide Open festival in a small picturesque town on Mühldorf in Bavaria, about an hour or so outside of Munich. It was a very enjoyable show, I’d even dare to say one of the best ones that I have seen (and I’ve seen my fair share). Here is a video of Hush to illustrate my point:

We have a new photo gallery from the show as well as from the one in Dortmund on June 10. Enjoy!

Thanks to SuperPurplefan for uploading the video and also to Helge for trying to help out.

This should put all skeptics to rest. Otherwise, they are just so NEGATIVE they can’t admit the facts. This is yet another (of many) examples of how the PRESENT PURPLE IMPROVISE. The intro the Hush. HUSH on it’s own. The intro to the upcoming next song…Black Night. Listen, Watch, it says it all….

Bravo to Purple and Bravo to ‘Nick Soveiko’ for posting this one.

Much better than the basic ‘Tour Review’ that has been taking over this site….

May Purple Continue to do what they do best…..”Keep On Keepin’ On” LIVE!!!!….

    Purple REIGNS!!!!!!!

    Cheers

Nice but I’m more interested in the footage from the cameraman who is on the stage.

it wasn’t filmed (not as far as i know). the video feed was for the two big screens on both sides of the stage. it was a big festival with a pretty high stage, so the cameramen were put on stage instead of in front of it.

    patrick:
intro is the peter gunn theme

    Nemanja says:

    Patrick, it’s a Peter Gunn Theme…

    stoffer says:

Purple as they should always be “LIVE”, doing what they do better than anyone else!

    T says:

This is strong. I particularly like the lower registers of the Hammond–it’s growling like it should. In addition, Roger’s playing was particularly clear and audible. My suggestion would be for him to take some of that and write some riffs for the next album.

Ian Paice goes with saying–the best.

  13. 13
    Matthew says:

Patrick – the song during the intro is Henry Mancini’s ‘Peter Gunn’ (the theme from the TV show of the same name), famously covered by Duane Eddy, The Art of Noise, The Blues Brothers, and many others.

    Roberto says:

I would like to listen to longer Paice solos…
and I would like to listen to Gillan screams…
I always loved these things on deep purple shows…
hope they will realease on dvd the fantastic concert of 2005 usa foxfest michigan…

    HardRockPete says:

Very good indeed! Gillan is still struggling a bit, or not trying hard enough(?), but the current band has certainly improved in the jamdepartement lately. That’s a very, very good thing!!!

  16. 16
    Stefan says:

    Patrick!

The intro is nicked from the “Blues Brothers movie and is called “Peter Gunn”….if I´m not very mistaken!

  17. 17
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

‘Peter Gun’ it is and Never Done before…….Kinda falls between the ‘Things I Never Said’ and ‘Never Before’ space…..

Awesome!!! and again…Great for us whom have seen everything else over the last 40 years….

    Something NEW…..YESSSSSSS!!!!

Oh let me guess, there are still those ‘hard core’ non-present Purple complainers….just go the F..k away…..

    Cheers

Incredibly cool. I only wish I saw/heard Black night instead of its intro :). I hope I’ll see any DVD with any gig of 2009 in shops…

    Sami says:

Impressive! Paice’s the king of feel, and almost
inhuman in his groove. One of the best versions/improvisations I’ve heard of Hush in a long time.

I always liked the version Emerson, Lake and Palmer did.

A friend of mine who is a prog rock musician and fan, check out his music with SURVIVAL, really hated it because he thought as ELP were much better tahn doing that……

    Sounds familiair, doesnt it?

Saw ELP live twice, a band to be seen if you like keyboard driven rock.

  21. 21
    stoffer says:

    Ooops…sorry I thought this was the Deep Purple website not ELP…my bad :{

  22. 22
    Rascal says:

    Smiling faces / enjoyment……………

    Ritchie who?

  23. 23
    CP says:

Peter Gunn was an American TV show starring Craig Stevens,FWIW.The tune is by Henry Mancini I believe.
Something that just struck me from this is that lost in the endless debate over set lists, Gillan’s voice, the lack of Ritchie,Jon etc., this is one hot band, period.Don seems to have found his voice in Purple,to me anyway. How can they keep playing those tunes every night? How can one get paid to have fun every night would be a more appropriate question.

    George Kikonishvili says:

    Roberto,

I was at Istanbul concert, Gillan was in great shape.
he struggled a bit during Highway Star, because it was the first song. after 3-4 songs his voice was ready and he sang quite well…
