Mistreated in Glasgow

In case you’ve been wondering what Doogie White is up to these days, he got back with his old friends from the Scottish band La Paz. A couple of weeks ago they did a Rainbow/Purple tribute show in Glasgow. Here’s a clip of Mistreated performed that night:

Chic McSherry on the guitar, ladies and gentlemen! Chic McSherry! (I kid you not. That’s his name.)

Now, here’s a business plan:

  1. Figure out if way back then you-know-whom had a fling with a young lass by the name McSherry
  2. Get some Russian promoters to book them
  3. Profit! 😉

Ah, and if you liked what you saw here, there’s more where it came from.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Thanks to Kevin Dixon for the info.

Ahh…how that name haunts me :-). Real name is Charles: my mother didn’t like Charlie and if you come from Glasgow you’ll get Chic (sometimes Chick). When I go to the USA where I have an office I change it to Chuck – although it is quite amusing to watch folk trying not to smirk if I do say Chic 🙂

Thanks for the post and it was great to be playing with Doogie again after all this time.

… that´s nearly the same class of guitarplay like his name …

But about Doogie – he´s a wonderful singer with a great voice !!

Why he shouldt not play together with old friends … if is happends not more than 2 times a year ( 2 Times = First one and the second last )

    😉

I don’t know what ‘La Paz’ means, all I know is that it’s the name of a town I once visited in Mexico, a nice resort! lol!

Here he is with “White Noise” covering ‘Tarot Woman’……I think I like it better than the JLT version posted elsewhere.

As I’ve always said, Doogie can cover every aspect of Rainbow. He has the range and is capable of better versions of Bonnet and Dio. That was what was so great when ‘Black Masquerade’ came out and they toured it. He really did justice to the full Rainbow gambit and Purple tunes also. If I were Blackmore, and I was to reform Rainbow, Doogie would be my choice. He is more generic and has no problem with any era of Rainbow. He does it all, and does it well. No Poofy, Pouty ass slapping here…oops.

    Cheers

Nice job–hard classic to sing–nothing wrong with the guitar. I’d rather see a strat used–however that is my opinion.

I interviewed Doogie some time ago, pretty good read, his sense of humor was snappy! It’s now in the Hub archives.

    George says:

Doogie White ws the best vocalist for Rainbow, but only after Dio

  8. 8
    stoffer says:

Agreed George!! Dio was the man, followed by Doogie.

  9. 9
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

    But,

If Rainbow were ever to reform, DIO would never sing JLT, Bonnet, Tony Martin or Doogie era songs. He would do as he did with Sabbath, only sing DIO era songs. As with Gillan and Purple. You get what you get with certain line-ups and I believe in ‘More Bang for the Buck’ and whould rather hold out for a Frontman who has no problem singing….’Someone Else’s Drivel’…..if you get my drift. In other words, ‘Taking a Hit for the Fans’.

    Cheers

  10. 10
    Andrés says:

Yeah… “If Rainbow were ever to reform, DIO would never sing Tony Martin era songs…” Mostly because Tony Martin never was in Rainbow!

  11. 11
    Crimson Ghost says:

H&H could not sing Ozzy era songs this time out as a stipulation in their contract as “Black Sabbath” or use the name to tour without Ozzy, as written by Sharon herself.

Too bad Iommi fell for that one, he should have had a lawyer read it, but he trusted that nothing like that would be in there, obviously.
A serious double crossing, but he bounced back well from it, I’d say.

    Interesting bedfellows, indeed.
Dio has never and will never have any particular qualms about singing songs he wasn’t a part of originally, so he says.

  12. 12
    Crimson Ghost says:

Btw, Tracy… the sole reason, or so they say, that H&H are on together, is “because we still can perform up to standards.” They’re all set for life in the wealth department.

Iommi’s line as he walked away from me after thaning him for all the years of music, was : “We’ll all be dead in another ten years, mate.”

    Sinister vibe indeed, very!

    Crimson Ghost says:

Also, “thanking” is spelled with a “k”, but the “k” key is peeled from my laptop. lol!!!!!!

    Re: #2

“La Paz” is indeed a town on the southern end of Baja California. It has a nice bay area.

“La Paz” also means “peace”. “La” is put on front since in romance languages there is a rule called “The Use of the Definite Article in the General Sense”. So…either it is a reference to the town or the group is simply called “Peace”. Or, they just thought it sounded cool.

Tracy–You are correct. Dio would never sing songs other than those he originally sang. He is not a fan of the other line ups. You would never see a Dio version of “Stone Cold”, “Since You Been Gone” or “Street of Dreams”.

However, both Doogie and JLT get the BIG thumbs up for not caring about that sort of thing and singing songs from other eras. I wish DP would do the same, even if in medley format–remember how they used to do the opening to “Burn” in the middle of “Speed King”? Deep Purple has a long legacy and some kind of homage to its own past would be nice.

    Re: #4

You are right. In a blues number, a Strat has much less of a bite. Some guitarists are partial to a particular model–personal preference. This version has guitar that reminds me more of the Whitesnake version (and nothing wrong with that!). Good job.

Okay…so no comments about Doogie sponging off his Rainbow legacy? Or does that only apply to JLT?

Both are great singers and of course with ties to Rainbow (and/or Deep Purple) they will be associated to those times. I just find the double-standard among some fans ridiculous.

By the way: Can we excuse and overlook spelling errors and minor slips? If the reader can tell what was meant, that should be fine. 🙂 It seems like we’re walking on eggshells lately. Hookd on fonix werked four mee.

“Entre los individuos, como entre las naciones, el respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz.”

Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

‘T’, thancs…..’K’. (sorry) for understanding my point.

Also, Excuse my ‘Era’ (error). Thanks Andrés for pointing out my misnomer. DIO is reflective in my RAINBOW world, and mixes in with the SABBATH world. Thereby I sometimes get them mixed up. And Tony Martin did such a great job covering the DIO era of SABBATH, I mix him into the RAINBOW field. He could do a BANG UP Job in that area. Aside from Doogie, I could definitely see Tony Martin in the next real ‘RAINBOW’ line-up. Not the Tribute Act.

If you all don’t get my drift, it’s because I have indulged in too much ‘Cervesas’…….’Aye Carumba’…….

    Cheeeeerzzzzz…..

  16. 16
    Crimson Ghost says:

Thanks T, and about Dio, yes, in Rainbow I’m sure that would be the case, sure and then some…

I agree about the spelling, for sure, but I just thought after looking back on that one, ‘thaning’ looked pretty odd, had to chuckle.

But back to Dio, you know there is a lot of harping about Gillan not singing any tracks from mk’s that followed, and I see no difference concerning that, but we’re only talking hypothetically, concerning Dio anyway. I just feel that Ian would not only have a hard time with Coverdale material, it doesn’t suit him in the subject matter department much at all either… I can’t fathom it.(yipes)

  17. 17
    james jay says:

T-correct–but could it be Dio singing Stone Cold would sound like me singing When a Blind Man Cries:) Dio is a great singer–made the best Sabbath tunes—but I agree with the JLT stuff—some people cannot get past his pretty boy looks. thanks T.

  18. 18
    Crimson Ghost says:

Dio called them “going on to be Foreigner jr.” after some heavy rock was left in them with Graham singing, and he didn’t think that was a good direction.

  19. 19
    james jay says:

#17 –no doubt Dio was the best R-bow singer–However G-B could hold his own. Down to Earth was some fantastic stuff for the time. JLT ballads toned it down—but made the wallets fat 🙂 and he had his share of good stuff with R-bow.

  20. 20
    Crimson Ghost says:

Not necessarily all that ‘fat’ – don’t let decent exposure go that far, he wouldn’t have disbanded them for the real wallet fattening. Nobody is that stupid. lol! He had a good thing going, but even better awaited.

At the time a friend of mine asked “why would he give up a singer like that for your voice cracking Gillan?” I replied with, “you just don’t get it do you… his appeal is universally much stronger, cracking voice or not” lol! But really, DP $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is thicker than Rain. And we thought it had something to do with preserving class.

  21. 21
    stephen says:

you mean he’s not been touring in some band called slightly to the left of the rainbow? 😉

  22. 22
    james jay says:

#18 saw R-bow’s Between the Eyes tour in Phila. When they had the huge eyeballs on stage—filled the Spectrum where the Flyers and 76ers played—the back up band was Aldo Nova. I guess all the pay dirt went to power those huge eyeballs and hernia operations for the roadies 🙂

  23. 23
    Crimson Ghost says:

Must have, lol… I would rather have seen a stateside show myself, then wait till the next tour and go abroad for a couple, as the shows were less than stellar, as where on the previous tour they were in full force, and not canceling shows with openers ‘Cheap Trick’ here.
Aldo Nova would have been a memory worth keeping.

    Purps69 says:

I saw La Paz on what was their proper farewell gig (after a few years of Christmas get togethers) at the Happening Club in Falkirk, Scotland in 1992 (I think) – I found out about them playing again on the day they were due to play Falkirk again so missed them this time around. Doogie is such a talent and from what I remember a decent bloke in to the bargain!

P.S. Re Comment 11 – Sharon couldn’t dictate what Black Sabbath as a name does – Tony Iommi bought out the rights to everything in the mid-80’s so he owns the sole rights – I’ll try and find a quote from him about it at some point as he has talked about why they’re not going out as Sabbath before!

  25. 25
    Crimson Ghost says:

I remember that, but it’s not what I’m told since the reunion, so go ahead, I’d like to see that. But Things changed as far as I know when they reunited, their contract as BS w/Ozzy was revised upon the reunion in 97 or whenever it was. Why do you think they can’t tour using the name without him, please explain if you will? They certainly tried, then had a luncheon with Ozzy and Sharon to sort it out and he took his lumps concerning the clause she wrote. She is good, but Tony is creative too, enter H&H.

  26. 26
    nsoveiko says:

    Crimson:
i remember Iommi speaking about it in an interview around the time H&H project was about to go on the road. he said that he still owns the rights to the Sabbath name and that they legally could have called in Sabbath, but decided to go as H&H to make it absolutely clear they won’t be performing any Ozzy material.

  27. 27
    Chic McSherry says:

Re 24 – We didn’t play Falkirk after 1990 until last month so it must have been back then you saw us then Purps69.

Interesting thread and interesting forum guys – didn’t know it existed until now so thanks for bringing my attention to it. As well as playing with Doogs pre-Rainbow I was/am a HUGE Blackmore/Purple/Rainbow fan.

There’s lots more stuff about Doogie and La Paz for anyone who is interested on our website which is linked from my name on this post.

    Cheers!

    @26

People believe what they want to believe… I heard talk about it from Iommi in an early on interview and looing back, he could have very well been speaking sarcastically and I just didn’t catch it all, but I did catch him mentioning the overall gist and Sharon was part of it… so I must have left it at that.

But it’s definitely a counter debate that still is being talked about concerning ‘supposed’ involvement from Sharon, and a discussion can be found here, but it looks heavily in favor of Iommi in fact still in control of the name, which is of course the version i favor… I’m not making it up or anything, I just lost track of the subject well over a year ago, but as I said, it’s still being talked about in 2009 anyway, it’s just not looking like the Sharon involvement holds much water.

I’m just the messenger concerning where I left off on the subject, you have to take what I say as conveyence, not gospel, unless of course I’m right, always.lol! I could always be wrong as well, it hurts no one either way, guys.

Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

I would have to maintain the thought that it was a ‘Business Agreement’ between H&H and Sharon. To be honest, if Iommi and the rest of the MK1 line-up of Sabbath are to continue to regroup and go on tour, and hopefully record a new record in the future, this is the best way to plan for the future. It opens the door for past MKs to reunite and specialize music from their era and still get credit as ‘Sabbath’ leaving the actual Sabbath name at the hands of the greatest promotional machine in the business. SHAARRRRROOOON!!!!

Love her or hate her, Ozzy and Sabbath remain a major force in the Hard Rock and Metal world with plenty of publicity channels at their beckon call. Too bad someone from Purple didn’t marry her. Then you’d see a totally different Public Purple Boom…..

    Cheers

Nice version – excellent singing – good guitar playing (Mr. McSherry does not try to sound like Blackmore – good way to play – ) funny drumming style, but good. I would go to the show if they would come near my hometown.

  32. 32
    Chic McSherry says:

Thanks Peter-no one can play or sound like Blackmore so I wouldn’t dream of trying to do that! We’ll only be doing two or three shows a year and they will all be local here in Scotland. Watch for more youtube videos or follow us on the La Paz website (click on my name I think!) if you’re interested. It’s just for fun – nothing serious – Doogie still has a lot going on professionally music-wise and this is just a wee bit of fun with some old mates. But thank you for the comments, we really appreciate them.

    Chic McSherry says:

Thanks again Crimson Ghost. You mentioned the name – La Paz – in a previous post. The explanation of how we got that is on the website. Spookily though I now visit Cabo San Lucas, Mexico several times a year on business…and the next town is called La Paz. Strange how things come around in your life.

We’ll be putting up news on Doogie on the La Paz site too so you’ll be able to keep tabs on him there. The La Paz thing is really just for fun and can only be fitted in around his pro schedule.

BTW – for everyone using this forum just want to say well done. I’ve seen lots of other forums like this where before you know it it’s all flamer posts and aggro between users. This seems much more good natured and civilised!

    Keep up the good work!

    Chic

  35. 35
    Crimson Ghost says:

Funnily, Cabo of course was going to be my vacation that year, but it was just so much cheaper to go to LaPaz and I’m glad I did, looking back I think Cabo would have been a blast, but not as intimate somehow.

    Cheers!

    nsoveiko says:

Chic: thanks for your kind words. we try to keep it civilized here, save for an oddball flame war.

and if your CRM thingy doesn’t work out, see my plan B 😉

  37. 37
    Chic McSherry says:

Yeah – Cabo is a FUN town for sure! Sammy Hagar has a nightclub there and I am usually down when he plays for his birthday bash in October. That whole area is suffereing right now because of the recession though…sad really.

    Chic.

  38. 38
    Chic McSherry says:

Thanks nsoveiko! The crm thing has been keeping me out of trouble for about 20 years now so we’ll see how that pans out…mind you Plan B sounds like more fun 🙂

Flamer posts can happen on any forum – I’ve seen some horrors where it is actually libelous content. Folk should say what they want freely about anything of course but sometimes the anonymity of a user name allows people to go too far. I often wonder if alcohol is involved at those times…:-)

Good moderators help, as well as common interests, and you guys seem to be on top of it.

    Chic McSherry says:

Hi again guys – I don’t mean to hijack this thread or anything but I just wanted to update you a little on our motives for getting La Paz back together with Doogie and what we’re doing now…

We (i.e. La Paz with Doogie White on vocals) have just managed to upload all of our old material to our website. It can be downloaded for £0.50 per track (about .056 euros or $0.75). There are 16 tracks in all and you can click on a link from the music section of our website to take you to a secure server where you can listen to snippets and download and pay for any that you want.

The quality isn’t great but it was a long time ago and we didn’t have any money for long studio sessions or quality producers!

    THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

    We’re doing this for charity.

ALL of the profits from sales will go to a children’s charity in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico. You can find out more about this charity on the lapazrocks website.

Thanks for your time and interest.

    Keep on rockin 🙂
