    69 says:

Cool, Neil Young made the list! Shame that neither Dave Grohl nor Mike Patton made the list though!

And Paul Rodgers taking a top position is a joke. I mean, above Roger Daltrey, oh come on!

One slight correction though. Ian Anderson is flutist, singer and songwriter and head of Jethro Tull, and has never been in Yes, whereas JON Anderson has fronted Yes indeed. Neither of them could seriously be called an expert in good singing though, hehe.

  2. 2
    Drdp says:

If you consider Dio participations in “Purple” history then there are 4 in the top 30 who a part of the DP family tree. Next nearest is Sabbath WITH Ozzy & Dio. But why isn’t that listed in Dio’s parentheses? Don’t agree with the Gilmour & Young inclusions this high though.

  3. 3
    George says:

3 Purple vocalists out of 5 featured in the TOP 40 voices of rock?
This underlines once more how great Deep Purple is (and we know this very good)

and what about Ritchie Blackmore as #15 in TOP guitarists poll?? was it absolutely nonesence or not??
I think (and not because I’m DP fan) that both GILLAN and BLACKMORE are #1 in their own instruments…

And also, Glen Hughes is much greater than Dickinson, Jagger and Bon Scott… I will not even compare Axl Rose to Glen…

    btw, good poll…

  4. 4
    Roberto says:

that is not planet rock list but plant rock list…
that list is ridicolous:james hetfield and axl rose above ronnie james dio, bono above glenn hughes , paul rodgers (very overrated) above ian gillan…and where are dan mccafferty and mark farner, jhon lawton and david byron, and jhon fogerty?
david gilmour, neil young and david bowie on that list…
    these are stupid lists…

  5. 5
    stoffer says:

In reality this is not a bad list, some schuffling around of the top 10 maybe but all in all a pretty good compilation. Bowie and Gilmour do belong Neil Young??…I dunno
    Cheers

  6. 6
    Ricardo says:

Top 40 singers without Greg Lake and Ian Anderson? And Glenn Hughes in 25 And Paul Rogers(Queen fx?)above Glenn?Naaahh….

  7. 7
    George says:

Actually, the greatest faults of this poll are:
Paul Rodges before Ian Gillan, and Glen Hughes after Axl, Dickinson, Jagger etc…
Gillan MUST be at least #3 (though I think he’s #1), and Glen MUST be at least in the TOP 10…

But why you ask the answer to the planet rock, while this list is editeb by the biographer of Led Zeppelin? 😀 😀

  8. 8
    Ger in Assen says:

    My own top ten
(just spontaniously, without ‘deep digging’ ….) :
    1. Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)
    2. Ronnie James Dio (Dio/Rainbow)
    2. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
    3. Freddie Mercury (Queen)
    4. Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
    5. David Coverdale (Deep Purple/Whitesnake)
    6. Rob Halford (Judas Priest)
    7. James Hetfield (Metallica)
    8. Sammy Hagar (Van Halen)
    9. Alvin Lee (Ten Years After)
    10. Kaz Lux (Brainbox, former dutch band)

Nobody has to pay attention to it, hahahaha !
    Cheers and bottoms up.
    Best regards,
    Ger, Assen, Netherlands.

    SEVEN-47 says:

Very good list Ger in Assen!

  10. 10
    purplepriest1965 says:

    Bert Heerink ex singer VANDENBERG

    Roy Khan KAMELOT

    Paul Rodgers, NEVER overrated

    Corey Glover LIVING COLOUR

    Dave Meniketti Y and T

    ROD EVANS!!!!!!

  11. 11
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

    I casted my vote….for Gillan!!!!

The poll was taken online over the Christmas Holidays…
Supposedly the outcome is from votes by FANS.

So, if this is how the list was truly derived, then there isn’t much to bitch about except for the fact that there are many different Fans, with many different views on singing……and how they rate the BEST.

    Cheers

  12. 12
    Sam Knight says:

This squabbling all sounds very familiar! Although Deep Purple are my favourite band, I do think that Paul Rodgers is currently the best rock singer on the face of the planet, which is saying something because Gillan was spectacular when I saw DP last.

  13. 13

    Thanks SEVEN-47 :))

  14. 14
    Ricardo says:

Hey Ger…Brainbox is the Focus prehistory. The great Jan Akkerman was the guitar player.I wish i could hear that band.

  15. 15
    Roberto says:

Really can understand Paul Rodgers on the top 100…
In my country He is not famous; I don’t like particulary his voice and his vocal range is small…after this list I can say He is the most overrated singer…

these should have been in the top ten but they even don’t appear in the top 100…:

    dan mccafferty
    mark farner,
    jhon lawton
    jhon fogerty

…and then…I like thin lizzy but Phil as one of the best singer of the story….
Bono not even in the top 1000…

  16. 16
    Victor says:

Rather than argue about singers – how ’bout everyone’s top ten like Ger’s? Here’s mine: In no particular order:

    Alvin Lee
    Ian Gillan
    Ian Hunter
    Bryan Ferry
    John Fogerty
    Jon Anderson
    Chrissie Hynde
    Noddy Holder
    Lucinda Williams
    Ann Wilson

Again, like most of my lists I just base them on performers who have blown me away during their performance with their vocal chops.

  17. 17
    Victor says:

And, we all get a little senile as the years go by. I can I forget the voices of

    Steve Marriott
    Alice Cooper
    Eric Burdon
    Mike Love
    Ray Davies
    David Bowie
    Nick Lowe
    Mark Knopfler
    Lou Reed
    Mike Ness

It’s like trying to pick favorite children. I love them all especially if their chops create/shape the sound of any band. Led Zep without Plant? The Who without Roger!!! Enough, I won’t do this anymore!!!

  18. 18
    Painkiller says:

    What a sorry-ass list indeed…

The beginning of the list goes like this (well, at least in my mind)…

-Ronnie James Dio (Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath/Heaven And Hell, Dio)

From here on the running order may change a bit along the way depending on the album/song/performance…

    -Rob Halford (Judas Priest, Halford)
    -Freddie Mercury (Queen)
    -Chris Farlowe (Colosseum)
    -Marco Hietala (Tarot, Nightwish, Conquest)
-Tim “Ripper” Owens (Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s
    Rising Force)
-Tony Martin (Black Sabbath, Tony Martin, Empire)
-Doogie White (Rainbow, Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force, Empire)
    -Michael Kiske (Helloween)
    -Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius, Kotipelto)

    -Ian Gillan (Deep Purple, Gillan)
    -David Coverdale (Deep Purple, Whitesnake)
-Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iommi)

    Karl-Heinz says:

This is a list of the most popular rock-shouters – but not of the BEST SINGERS.

For the best SINGERS Robert Plant can’t be under the top ten.
And Freddie Emercury sould be No.1 and Glenn Hughes No. 2.

I miss some singers with excellent voices:
    – John Lawton (what a voice still today)
    – David Byron

And what about more commercial rock singers?
Joe Lynn Turner, Lou Gramm, Bernie Shaw

  22. 22
    AndreA says:

I have no more desire to talk about rankings and stupid things like these… Plant Sucks (mainly nowdays), Gillan is my Musical Universe..

    next best drummer and bass.player?

  26. 26
    Pedro says:

Well, it makes me laugh. Most of those singers don’t come to my CD player. Robert Plant could be the last of them. Ian Gillan, of course, keeps going the first.

    AndreA says:

    ciao Roberto…

like upstair I wrote that I don’t like discussion of this arguments, classifications etc. but at the end I am never able to stop writing…I am very instinctive, worse than an animal,a wild horse (my surname is cavallo, from the land of Abruzzo..you can understand..)

sometimes in the nights, when I sleep I “see” Gillan,DP…believe me,it is true because They accompanied me in my life since I was a little Kid,
They have entered into my genetic code, that never happens with led zeppelin .. even if I knew them…

    buon anno

    Rascal says:

And I thought Abruzzo was known for the migratory habits of sheep and cows………

  31. 31

the migratory start in the full winter from mountains toward the sea cost, but this habit is not longer as intense like in the past…:the old traditions are disappearing.

I Don’t agree with Plant being #1. There are so many better vocalists then him and IAN GILLAN is one of them. Plant is always at the top of every ones list. If I had a list he would be pretty dead last.

MODENA: THE GREAT NAMES OF MUSIC INTERNATIONAL ‘PAVAROTTI & FRIENDS “A DINNER WITH THE” JEWELS OF DONNAFUGATA – GREAT SUCCESS OF THE WINES OF TOP LINE OF HOUSE WINE SICILIANA THAT HAS INVITED TO ARTISTS IN AUGUST SICILIA NIGHT FOR THE HARVEST

A festival of music and wine to gladden the Ghota international entertainment at the “Pavarotti & Friends.” Donnafugata, the Sicilian winery that refers to the famous novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa, has again made the center, offering guests a dinner of his music from “Thousand and One Nights.” Modena restaurant to the mythical “Europe’92” located inside the Maestro Pavarotti’s Riding Horses, run by 10 years by one of the most noble families of high Italian gastronomy, Marisa Clò with Caesar and his son Luca, the most beautiful of the world music and entertainment has tasted foods with a selection of wines of Donnafugata, discovering the scents and harmony. A unique and rare qualities that made these wines known and appreciated throughout the world. George Benson, Fiorella Mannoia, Patty Pravo and glorious group Deep Purple have sipped the great reds of the Estate of Donnafugata, appreciating fully in the important structure combined with a pleasant smoothness. “Charming,” said Benson enjoying the “Thousand and One Nights” vintage 97, asking the representatives of Donnafugata on the wine “Nero d’Avola” and techniques of this great aging red Sicily. A love blossomed between a scope and one that has been consolidated with an invitation to attend the harvest in August night each year the soul of agro Entellina Contessa.

Great success for the Passito di Pantelleria DOC of Donnafugata: delicious ravioli with carrots and onions Ryé Ben, a creation of Chef in’92, in honor of the evening. Fiorella Mannoia and Deep Purple have really felt “the fragrances and flavorings Mediterranean” on the island of Pantelleria volcanic, returning several times to fill the glass.

“We are happy – commented Jose Rallo, the manager – that’s most interesting names from the world of international pop music has been able to discover our wines in such a unique, appreciating the way down to the bottom of the quality and sophistication. A recognition that makes us proud of our work and that we satisfy the commitment and passion that we put in the vineyard and winery. ”

    Possibly.

But rather it may confused with my comment relating to the JLT/DP days when I mentioned poor record and gig attendance.

But at the same time I thoroughly enjoy the dulcet tones of John Lydon and the ‘Pistols’. Quality may not necessarily be the ‘catch-word’ many people would use when refering to this band.

The test of an enjoyment is the remembrance which it leaves behind.

The problem I guess is defining quality…….

that’s meaning it is not a rockalbum?
    mmmhhh..

  104. 104
    Crimson Ghost says:

For the most part it’s not, but that doesn’t mean it won’t feature any rock music, it’s just not going to be straight forward rock or hard rock that is.
I happen to love AOP and could use another ten or so of them, so it doesn’t bother me none, in fact I gave up on him ever really rocking hard again when he did Dreamcatcher… I knew it was over then, and I hope this is way better than that.(then along comes Abandon, but I wasn’t fooled by that craft reliant effort)

If you’ve heard the track “Over And Over” from Jon Lord and the Hootchie Cootchie Men, or better yet “No Worries” from Gillan’s Inn, then you’ll have an idea of what it might sound like. In fact “No Worries” features the same base line up as this.
This is an album that will highly entertain Roger Glover, pretty sure…

  105. 105
    AndreA says:

Oh thank you for the answer dear Crimson Ghost..

both are not hard rock style, so what and how would be his next?
    blues, really?

  108. 108
    Crimson Ghost says:

Not a big fan of Catcher or Naked Blunder myself.
This will be more jazzy eclectic style than blues, but those tracks do help describe what I’ve been told.
Not a fan of Morris at all either.

  109. 109
    purplepriest1965 says:

    I love different styles

It s just the strenght of the material and or how he ll sing it which is important to me.
I dont need or crave the so called screams. Only when its not done terribly bad
Toolbox screams I was surprised with.Very good!

AOP has a lot things I really cannot appreciate
Even Clouds and Rain which I like is not worked out enough
But the album has a few NICE tracks, hehehe

I always think Jesus Christ Superstar and Cherkazoo when thinking about extraordinairy Gillan performances out of the heavy rock field.

  110. 110
    Roberto says:

    Crimson
    sorry but I don’t understand:
you describe an jazzy eclectic style album using blues tracks?
it’s a little bit strange…but what is important is that it will contain wonderful songs…

AOP to me sounds wonderful:songs like ‘telephone box’ and ‘dislocated’ are pure genius…how they did to invent that songs?

toolbox tour has been wonderful:the bootleg live munchen 1991 is just amazing in my opinion!

But when I think to Gillan outside hard rock field I always think to that masterpiece which is on my top 10 of the best albums ever that bring the name of ‘clair air turbulence’.The rythm section and the middle part of ‘over the hill’ say it all…

Jesus Christ Superstar is on my top 10 too, but it’s not a Gillan project…

‘dreamcatcher’: I can d an album like that in my house with my Computer…bad songs too…

  111. 111
    Crimson Ghost says:

I can explain… the tracks I mentioned to describe it have some tribal and blues factors between them, and it’s this sort of ‘culture’ the album is supposed to contain… add the horns and you have it.
Not quite blues, not quite jazz, but multicultural and varied, but it’s supposed to very consistent, so I assume the tracks will ‘all’ be strong in one way or another.

It’s hard to get a full album like this out without the risk that at least a few clunkers can cause an imbalance, such as on Dreamcatcher.
In other words, MLJ says it’s no a patchy effort, it’s 100% throughout, as far as he is concerned.

  112. 112
    AndreA says:

    oh purplepriest @108

when I bought TOOLBOX me too I remained astonished by the wickedness of Gillan’s scream:a real heavy beating on all my bones…
    and a wonderful coverart…

    EVILOVELY (and bastard!!)

    “…..
Dirty dog, you had your day
I know when. I get when to stray
    Now you’re out to grass
    And the world goes past

Don’t you know all the turns
Now you’ve got what you deserve
Paid in full, I’ve been told

Bucharest 1992 DVD, yeah, great stuff, he was 100% on that night, amazing vocals! Pre-distant Dreamcatcher songs and all. It really is the best.

Why does the magazines put the fucking numbers?

This isn´t a competition. Some of the selected singers don´t deserve their place because they are entertainers with poor or average singing technic (Axl Rose, Bruce Dickinson, David Lee Roth, etc.). Some of them are very overrated (mainly Plant, Gillan and Rodgers) and a few ones are underrated (sometimes Mercury, Coverdale and Hagar).

My favourite singers of the list are:

    – David Coverdale (He and Rob Halford are the only rock/metal singers that can make high notes without falsetto. He has been compared with Plant, Gillan and Rodgers but finally his incredible records can prove his superiority against all them.)
    – Freddie Mercury (He was like a all-in-one because of being a great singer, instrumentalist, composer and performer. He used his voice´s gradual change so well that he is known as the best rock singer of the history)
    – Ronnie James Dio (he was a dark poet and a great singer, but i think that his best feature was that status of eternal fullness during all his career)
    – Sammy Hagar (He have the Dio´s fullness and also is as energetic as Coverdale… and another things makes him one of the best).

Hi Tracy, I actually did not know this list was posted so far prior (i missed it?!?) , hence my #132 entry! I just thought your response meant you wanted to play! I’m always up for some back and forth banter… nothing personal… just fun! (even though i realised after, that i misspelled your last name!)

    Cheers, Scott

Just stumbled upon this list somehow, and find it pretty unbelievable that this goofy publication thinks that only ONE female artist is worth a mention out of FORTY? Seriously?! That’s messed up. So many amazing/gorgeous/incredible/fantastic female voices rushing through my head right now….What a joke. A really ridiculous, unfunny, pathetic joke. Shame on you.

@137 Charlotte, that list is from eleven years ago. I daresay the people on that list, & the order their listed in would change from week to week.
It’s subjective. People change their minds regularly. Different people might decide the list, etc. I wouldn’t take it so seriously.
I personally wonder why Wanda Jackson wasn’t mentioned, or Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Mama Cass, Pat Benatar, Julie Driscoll & so on.
    Cheer up, B.R. 😎

The list is okay, but Glenn Hughes was and is a better vocalist than Coverdale. Just watch and listen to any of the DP stuff with both of them and you will see who really had the chops. And now, Glenn’s voice is still strong but David’s? Not so much.

You all forgot one of the greatest rock singers: Eric Burdon from The Animals.
