Deep Purple Live Index
Martin Ashberry has started a project of enormous proportions, which goal is to catalogue not only all Purple concerts, but include descriptions of all corresponding audio and video live recordings (including bootlegs), document setlists and support acts.
Anyone who has specific recollections of setlists for the shows they’ve been to are cordially invited (nay, begged) to let me have them, should they feel so disposed. It covers 1968 to the last gig performed.
Deep Purple Live Index now includes setlists for 284 shows [368 at the time of this writing — Ed.], based on live tapes, reviews, official releases etc., and will increase in fits and starts as I get down to it. So far, the bulk of the sets are 84-87, 94, 75-6 and some other odds and sods. I’ve listed around 2,100 shows in total so I’m not even at 15% yet (and some of them will never be known, I imagine) but if you’ve anything to contribute, please click down through the individual line-ups and, if there’s a ‘Click!’ in the link column of a gig you’ve been to, feel free to check and let me know. If there’s no ‘Click!’ and you have the setlist, I’m open to any incoming information.
Trivia fact: Of the 284 shows I’ve documented so far, the set list had 95 variations for the main set or encores.
You know when you start something that’s really far to big to ever finish but you just can’t help yourself….?
Cheers for now,
Martin

September 6th, 2008 at 09:43The venue 6/1/1970 in Worthing was at the Assembly Hall and the support act was a local band called Airbreak. I was the drummer in the band Airbreak and it was an evening I will never forgot.Deep Purple were nothing less than dynamite.I have never seen a band like it.I still go to every concert I can make and they are still superb.I was very proud to have supported Deep Purple.Hope this little bit of info helps.Good luck with your project.
September 7th, 2008 at 13:07Quote:
“We’re not the most fashionable unit touring out there in the world. We’re not spring chickens, but the shows we’re putting on are among the best we’ve ever done,” Paice told The Jerusalem Post from London, where the band was playing last week.
“That filters around to fans, they talk to each other on chats and Web sites, and I think that our continued success has something to do with that.”
Around here we’re likely to agree! 🙂
And:
“I actually feel better about the way I’ve been playing in the last six months than I have for 10 years,” he said. “Everybody gets to the point of feeling like they’re stagnating, and then you find another little door you can open and move a little forward.
“I think the band is in that stage now. What we’re doing may not be easy, but we make it sound easy”.
All of which was evidenced by the two shows I recently saw in Denmark and Sweden. Nicely reassuring.

September 8th, 2008 at 06:31the world knows DEEP PURPLE ,don’t worry ROBERTO.They have tour everywhere in the world man!and I would just like to add that little thing: if the songs DP wrote have been writen by band like rolling stone or even madonna 75 per cent of these songs will have been hits and airwave all over the world ,but like little IAN said “we are not the most fashionable band and not spring chickens’that’s the reality of that fu####g world unfortunatly. cheers and long live DP.
September 10th, 2008 at 11:13I got to meet Deep Purple, minus Blackmore, in South Houston, Texas. I saw the 1985 show at the Summit in Houston, Texas. The best concert I ever saw was at the 1985 Texas Jam which Deep Purple headlined with; The Scorpions,Ted Nugent, Bon Jovi, and a couple of metal bands. I even saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in April 1987.
September 11th, 2008 at 06:15I have always enjoyed the Fireball album the most. What I have been trying to procure is a really good 1971 Deep Purple concert. I bought the Listen, Learn, Read On boxed set and really enjoyed the No No No version from the Beat Club. I would like to be able to buy some good live Deep Purple from 1971, 1973, and the 1985 reunion tour.
Deep Purple is the best band. I feel like younger folks are culturally deprived at not being able to relate to the Deep Purple sound.
Respectfully,
Joshua Collins

There has to be an Official release on the Sydney shows from 1984 !!!! A dvd Box set with all 3 Sydney shows. I dreamed about it last night….
October 22nd, 2008 at 14:56Purple fan from Brazil and Roberto… no such material exists in the hands of the management, but Drew Thompson does have some of it, but don’t ever expect a DVD document of any full show from 84-87. Dreaming is always fine, but I’m sorry to inform you that it’s not going to happen. It’s also very expensive and there is no way that a few thousand at best fans are going to recoup the funds it would take to undertake such a project.
Someone has been pulling Russian legs concerning the 12-14-84 show from Sydney, but they’re misinformed, the only existing material going around is the audience shot bootleg and the 35mm footage DVD that is full of excellent close ups, but it’s still not one of the pro cam versions…. anyone’s guess is as good as mine as to where that footage lies, try contacting the unknown to most TV company that filmed it, but I wouldn’t expect good news if any concerning it.
Martin, always a pleasure mate… keep up the great work you karma GOD!
