Bananas is Deep Purple's first studio since Abandon in 1998. It features 12 tracks of immense variety and musical prowess. Don't take our word for it. One of our reviewers thinks Bananas is "the most playful Deep Purple album since the beginning."

"What is most joyful on this CD is the sound of the band. Wonderful. Notice how positive and loaded with good energy this record is."
Martin Karski

Our favourite Greek reporter, Stathis Panagiotopoulos, was the first to jot down his Bananas impressions for The Highway Star (and the world for that matter) and many more have followed him - like Attila Scholtz who has provided us with an elaborate and insightful musician's view of the album. Read with joy as they all take us through Bananas - reviews on the left.

"Gillan is confident enough to deliver a succession of lyrical witticisms in the manner of a veteran stand up comedian. You always know each and every song is rooted in some mini cameo from his eventful day-to-day life. A job well done."
Garry Sharpe-Young

But what do you think? If you've gotten yourself a case of Bananas and has a few words to say about it, please drop us a line

"I could get shot for saying this, but I think that Bananas is better than Perfect Strangers and Machine Head, almost as immortal as Purpendicular, but not quite."
Scott Bell

Since Abandon, the band has performed three new songs onstage. "Long Time Gone" from the summer of 2000 seems to have been put to one side, while the excellent "Up The Wall" from 2002's UK tour has been re-written and is now called "I've Got Your Number". The instrumental "Well Dressed Guitar" was recorded for Bananas, but has been left off and might surface as a single b-side somewhere. This appears to have been EMI's decision.

"This is the most Purple sounding album in a long, long time. The production was done in a way to prevent overproduction. In other words, the band wrote the songs, learned them and went into the studio to make a Deep Purple album. What comes across is a very DP sounding effort."
Classic Rock Revisited

Two of the songs on Bananas were co-written with now ex-Hammond Maestro Jon Lord, and we asked Roger Glover to explain. We also asked Jon Lord what he thinks about Bananas.

"We were sensing that Jon was leaving, his commitment was only half-hearted. That was a important reason the new album was late. But you don't kick out Jon Lord from Deep Purple, it had to be his call to leave."
Ian Gillan

And have you seen the luxurious gatefold vinyl edition yet? It does exist, you know!

If you spot any media reviews of Bananas (and they're 'forwardable'), do let us know.
