Much too short
Deep Purple live at Emsland Arena (Lingen, Germany 2024-10-26)
First the complaints: The gig in Lingen, Germany, last Saturday was much too short! They should have played at least 22 hours longer. Then I could have heard a good bunch of my favourite DP songs.. But after two hours the old and lazy sods seemed to be exhausted. Of course not!!! After fascinating two hours the sold-out Emsland-Arena (capacity of 4500 people) was cheering for more, but the lights went on. I must not mention the musicianship of the band members, we all know how great they all still are. The courage of the band not to rely only on the old classics, but play six (!) songs from =1 made this gig very special for me. The best: If somebody was there, who didn’t know anything about Deep Purple, he or she surely couldn’t decide which song was from the seventies and which one was a new song. The songs from =1 fitted perfectly. With Simon McBride on guitar the band has gone back to it’s roots. Don’t get me wrong: I appreciate Steve Morse very much, but somehow Deep Purple seems to be rejuvinated with Simon as many people stated here before. This also applies to Ian Gillan, who after all the gigs in the last months still is in very fine form. Of course he can’t scream as in the seventies anymore, but today he sings much better than for example during the eighties, when he and Ritchie Blackmore seemed to be competing who is the worst of the two … All in all I had a wonderful evening and I’m quite sure that goes for the other 4499 people who witnessed this concert too. One more complaint to conclude this review: It’s a pity that they dropped “Hard lovin’ man” after the American tour, because it’s one of my favourits. But instead we got Old-fangled thing as the first encore which was more than compensation. Long live Deep Purple!!!

saw them yesterday in Brussels. After seeing them about 25 times in the past, i skipped a few years, because Gillan’s voice was not very good and I did not want to spoil my good memories… but yesterday was really really awesome! quite sold out (i think) normally 8000 people

October 29th, 2024 at 12:42Such a wave of goodwill for the new line-up, but having seen them both in Schloss Salem at the very beginning of their =1 Tour and recently in Mannheim at the very end (Gillan’s voice was btw better in Mannheim than in Salem): It’s richly deserved.
If Ritchie’s erratic nature was a turn-on for you and you thought him entertaining and of historical value even on one of his off-nights or when he had managed to poison the band atmosphere once again, then nothing can beat the curiosity, angsty anticipation and sheer excitement that went along with the unpredictability of an original Mk II line-up gig.
If guitar playing at the height of excellence, a faultless execution and intricate guitar parts as well as sophisticated guitar sounds rocked your boat, then Mk VII/VIII offered you unparalleled moments of wonder. You got DP and a guitar clinic all rolled into one – sans any drama or crankiness.
But for the rest of us, Mk IX sees the band return to its rock’n’roll roots (with some DP-typical technical flourish) and an ebullient good time vibe. That invigoration just feels great to witness and is infectious.
PS: I assume that Hard Lovin’ Man was also faded out because of the strain for Big Ian’s voice. And as regards Space Trucking, I noticed in Mannheim that he did not even attempt the screams and falsetto parts anymore and in places even changed the melody of the song, going down rather than up. In a way he was doing a David Coverdale/Ronnie Dio version of the song. 😂 And that is perfectly fine by me, it’s what aging singers have always done: accommodate the vocal lines to what they can still realistically do.
October 29th, 2024 at 13:49We went to the concert in Amsterdam, 66, 16 & 17 y.o. Amazing concert with 6 from the new album. Gillan sounds the best on the new songs. The setlist equals the one from Brussels. And we enjoyed every second. There was a sort of psychedelic atmosphere during the instrumental passages enhanced by the visuals on the big screens. I hope they’ll be back one more time and then one more, and then…,

Some restraint please.
October 30th, 2024 at 23:39I always felt “Hard lovin’ man” was the song that made Big Ian struggle the most. To be honest, I’m glad they dropped it. I prefer watching a relaxed singer…

…and they been around the Borealis… or is it the Boring Alice?
He truly is! 😊
October 31st, 2024 at 09:20There is also this credibility thing with an 80-year-old exclaiming that he’s a hard lovin’ man, let’s face it. “I’m a v(i)agrant 💜 of love” more like, though that sounds almost like a Whitesnake tune. 😁
November 1st, 2024 at 00:09Hard lovin man was played in Katowice which made that show the longest in a very long time.
