=1 more time in Chicago

Deep Purple live at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre (Tinley Park, USA 2024-08-23)

This is my 11th time seeing Deep Purple and 6th in Chicago. I had 3rd row seats on the aisle in front of the drum kit and Roger’s usual lair.

What amazes me is how good and how energetic a band can be with four fifths of its members in their late 70s. The musicianship and sound was superb and Gillan’s voice was the best that I’ve heard in the last 15 years. He also added more humorous banter between songs that I’ve seen before. Simon is a breathe of fresh air. He gives DP a heavier sound and is a top notch soloist.

The set was a mix of songs of seven songs that they wrote and recorded over 50 years ago, five from the new album, and two from inbetween those eras. It was the same as what was reported the night before except they didn’t do Wring that Neck or Green Onions. This was the 1st time that I’ve seen them to Anya live. The new stuff was very well received by the audience and flowed well with the old classics. Come on, nobody else can do that.

Seeing Yes open for them was a nice bonus. They played all of my favorites (All Good People, Yours is no Disgrace, Stormship Trooper, Roundabout). Steve Howe who is also in his late 70s looked old and frail, but once he starts playing he performs and moves like a much younger person.

This might be the last time I get to see DP perform. But I’ve said that several times before. But if they come back to USA, even as 80-year olds, then I am buying a ticket.

Mamma miaa: I find it ridiculous that in the USA you happen to see a hard rock concert sitting in an armchair..

@1- I was there also and it was TERRIFIC!! We were seated approx 10 rows behind you, what an amazing show! Gillan is rejuvenated, sounds and looks better than he has in a long time and you’re right he was joking with the crowd all night! Simon is the perfect fit for the band, as much as I like SM, Simon has helped the band kick it up a notch! It was SO refreshing to hear the new material, just a breath fresh air really. They’re stage show has also been updated possibly someone more “techie” in charge. The waiter pouring a glass of red wine for Don during his solo was a crown pleaser as well haha. I think they were running close on time that is why Green Onions was left off. The crowd was really into it the whole night, true fans really w/lots of vintage DP shirts and perfect weather! We will drive even farther if there is a next time so worth it, just a great gig I wish I could see them again tonite! Yes was very good and a new respect for Steve Howe after seeing him play! @1 yes we had chairs/seats but didn’t matter most all of us stood all night 🙂

They call it “age-appropriate accommodation”, AndreA! If DP tours very much longer, large parts of the core audience will need to be equipped with state of the art oxygen supplement devices. “Nobody gonna take my mask, I’m gonna breathe it to the ground …” 😁

    #1 AndreA:

when I was on holiday in Finland, I went to see Stratovarius in concert, and they were in a huge tent with the audience divided in half by barriers: we were standing, while on the other side there were tables set up and people were having dinner with the waiters who served the food… every now and then they got up and went under the stage to headbange, and then went back to the table to eat, I’ve never seen anything like it!

@ 5 – a similar setup to The Hoochie Coochie Men band with Jon Lord that I witnessed in Queensland back in 2003. Although they are of course NOT a heavy metal style band. But it was alfresco dining at a 5 star resort & every now & again many punters got up to boogie woogie to the up tempo hoe down blues numbers. Then they would return to their respective tables & continue to dine. But a metal concert, yes indeed that sounds a tad different. Why not, although any Vikings witnessing that may have had second thoughts. Cheers.

I was there too–row M in front of Roger. I agree with much of what has been said. Ian did very well indeed, especially in Into the Fire, and it was great to hear the new songs, which he charmingly thanked the crowd for listening to. I’d add that it was very interesting to hear what Simon did with the solos in the old songs, and that Paicey was superb, the most reliably excellent of them all. But there was a lot of sitting down in my vicinity for the new songs until they played Space Truckin’, though the woman to my left clearly knew the new songs. And it may have been my ears, but I was having trouble making out the keyboard parts during the songs; the low range was too high in the mix.

Steve Howe was always a small guy and now looks very frail indeed but he managed to jump a bit, so good for him.
