Deep Purple live at IJsselhallen (Zwolle, Netherlands 2013-10-19)
I saw the band the 19th, in Zwolle The Netherlands, and i can say without a doubt this truly was the best show I ever saw this line-up of Deep Purple do, they really are at the best of their game on this tour.
I have seen the band three times by now and followed a lot of live performances of this lineup but saterday night was really something different.
When the tour first started, they only had two songs from the new album played in their set, so I was afraid that by the time I got to see them, it would be the whole greatest hits set all over again, and that wasn’t the reason for me to go and see them, I love the new album, and for once I was hoping they would actually do something with this to give their setlist a good boost.
And to my surprise, they did.
Five new, of what I think are surely five of the best tracks from the new album, where played this night.
And that’s not the only positive thing worth mentioning, it seems like their experience with Bob Ezrin has made them remind them of where their roots lay, in the last few years, Deep Purple played a lot more as if they were on auto pilot, out with the long jam sections and almost a little to none improvisation in their live music.
Well I must say that we got plenty of that back in their live act, as if they had a wake-up call, Bob really did shake them up a lot.
Songs like, Hard lovin Man, Apres Vous, Hell To Pay, Hush, Strange Kind of Woman, Lazy and Black night, were especially Don and Steve could go completely crazy, and show their skills to the fullest and they did this, big time.
I never thought that they still had it in them, but they’re really packing out on this tour, and I had the greatest night with the band that I ever had.

Highway Star was left out again, but I didn’t really missed that song, in my opinion the song has been overplayed for years now, just like Smoke on the Water in my opinion, which I understand they have to do, because it’s their most recognisable songs in their career, but it wouldn’t bother me as a diehard fan if they would leave out ‘’Smoke on the Water’’ to.
I had a great night, and a wonderful time, and I can recommend to people, if they’re playing close by, and you have the time to go, just go it’s Deep Purple more alive than they have been in years.

Great to see them opening the gig with the four not-so-often-heard songs! What the set list is missing is the slow blues. All the time in the world would do the job perfectly.

October 21st, 2013 at 16:22I’ve been to the show in Zwolle too and I agree with Jesper that it was a great show. I think that the new album is one of the best albums of their entire career and I was very glad they played five songs of it. The last couple of years I thought they played not anough songs of the Steve Morse era and last saturday this was changed and the show was a great mix of the classics and ‘new’ songs. It was great fun to see with how much fun the guys were playing. Ian’s voice was great and the other guys are all superb musicians. Keep on the good work guys!

I had a great time and I hope they will play in Holland a lot of times.

I’m sure they could be creative with the old songs and work riffs and segments in to some kind of extended jam. They have so many great songs it’s almost criminal to leave them out.

October 22nd, 2013 at 11:31I also attended the show, the first one I saw since 2006. Indeed it was a very good performance. I was very pleased by the fact that five songs of Now What ?! were played during this show. Contact Lost was also very nice, but the rest of the songs were all from the MK II aera. Very good songs of course, but I would like to hear even more new material.
The show started with Ian Gillan being hardly audible. This was very fortunate for the great singer, since he completely missed the lyrics on Into the Fire. The last verse he started with the second line of the verse, which caused the band some trouble, but they picked up nicely.
The most solid performance to my opinion came from Roger. He kept the rythms going, together with Ian Paice, and was all smiles and played really for the audience.
I loved the bass-solo in the end of the show which finally led to Black Night.
Surprisingly Highway Star wasn’t played. For me that is the ultimate Deep Purple song, so I missed it and wondered whether there will ever be a Deep Purple concert without Smoke on the Water.
Steve was as good as ever and hopefully the band will honour him soon when he celebrates being in Deep Purple for 20 years. ( Maybe a tour with Morse aera songs only? )
Don Airey treated us with two solos in one of which he incorporated a little piece of “Sylvia” from the dutch band Focus.
Above and Beyond is an outstanding track which was played forcefully. A true dedication to Jon Lord whose portrait was shown on the screens and the wall behind the stage.
I went home smiling and had to drive 90 minutes, listening to Deep Purple music in my car.
October 22nd, 2013 at 19:01I’ve also been to the show in Zwolle and I totally agree with all the good reviews. This was the eleventh concert I saw of Purple and certainly one of the finest. Next concert in Holland please in the HMH in Amsterdam. This hall has a much better sound.
