Well I’ve seen purps a few times now since the reform and there have been a few enjoyable dates – like the trip down to Ipswich to see Jon Lords last show. Over the years I have tried to see as many as I can and 2007 it was 4 during the UK tour including 3 on the Trot, Glasgow, Sheffield and Birmingham and yep good fun…
SO last nights show in Glasgow with the orchestra behind was … erm … in simple terms ONE of the best I’ve seen in a good few years. I’m not going to break it all down… JUST go and see it OK.
I hope you have better weather than I did as a car aqua planning on all 4 wheels in the oustside lane at 60 mph for 100 yards is not fun. Anyhow waffle … the boys are really flying at the moment … GO AND SEE THEM, ok, and enjoy – all the old favs are there and Lazy and When a blind man cries (my favs) were just superb.

Totally agree, a fantastic show, their greatest hits with the orchestra were superb. The orchestra give the classics a new lease of life.

November 27th, 2011 at 21:54The SECC security however were very heavy handed in preventing the audience from standing up,however they couldn’t prevent the entire auditorium from standing when smoke started!
This was the first time I’ve seen Purple since their Knebworth gig back in ’85.It was great to hear the tracks from Perfect strangers brought back the memories.The highlight for me was hearing ‘When a blind man cries’ very emotive.The orchestra were amazing.A great gig well worth the 2 hour drive through the horrendous weather conditions.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen these guys but last night was a different experience. Nice to hear Hard Loving Man. Lazy was awesome. Maybe not the best I’ve heard big Ian’s voice but what the hell – he’s still got it in spades.
November 27th, 2011 at 22:43I didn’t hear a single person have a bad view of the difference in sound with the orchestra.
One thing I do have to say – the boys blew Cheap Trick off the stage – and they weren’t too shabby!
If I had a single criticism it would be that I just wish they’d bring back Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming into the live set. I suppose the big problem is that there’s only so much time and so much classic material.
Can’t wait until next time………………..
Deep Purple playing greatest hits..AGAIN! I’m sorry, I don’t wish to spoil anything for those that currently enjoy Purple in their present frame of mind but it’s not the band that I’ve loved all my life. It’s obvious to say they’re still fantastic musicians and can still put on a show but…they’re not dangerous anymore and that’s what made them great. Perhaps it’s too much to expect at their age but all their doing for me is tarnishing the legacy. Gillan keeps going on about the average age at their shows being 18 but he’s only kidding himself! I’d much rather they treated their legacy the same way as Robert Plant obviously does with Zep. Tour attendances may well refute my argument but for me Deep Purple just fill me with sadness these days.

these guys are bang on…amazing show, all the band sounded great, the orchestra just heavys it all up….honestly! if you do go dont miss cheap trick, the best opening act ever, and hats off to big Ian giving it 100% all the time, rapture, hush, no one came were all mind blowing!

Last I read, you stated you hadn’t watched it yet. Did you? If so, by all means give us a rundown on where it (to coin someone else’s phrase) is below PAR. You haven’t seen them LIVE on this tour either, yet you are hard fast the critic. Please sit and watch it for us. Hopefully you have a halfway decent sound system to run it through. May as you state “you are not deaf”, but maybe a sound system issue might exist. You have complained about your antiquated, outdated equipment more than once. Might be the problem. Go see them LIVE. Then there will be no issue…..

December 9th, 2011 at 17:39Yeah thats pretty bad. Sounds like the way he sang it on the new DVD. I think IG can still sing OK, it’s just the WAY he sings certain things (like ‘Hard lovin’ Man’). He needs to find a better approach to handling certain notes. And for god’s sake stop doing that cheesy “Yow! Wow!” substitute for his earlier career ‘silver throated’ singing! (Ex: “Child in Time” or “Disturbing the Priest”).
That’s funny. What the F..k does MIJ have to do with ANYTHING? When I listen to California Jam, it’s like listening to a castrated version of Made in Japan. You know why? It’s not MIJ. WTF! They stand by themselves. They are what they are. Great points in Deep Purple History with some outstanding musicianship and performances throughout. You really should get off your whiny cranky duff and go see them. Time is running out. You seem to be getting older and crankier by the day. I believe they will be performing long after you are gone at this pitiful rate you exude. So hurry before it’s too late.

I m absorbing Colin Hart’s book right now(I ve been reading hours into the night : ) and C also says that the whole thing was one big amateuristic set up, seen from a organisation perspective.
Btw, “Dorian” ofcourse is a strange slip when you know the story.

I had a cat that I let out and he would catch stuff and bring it home, leaving it on my door step as a trophy for me to see. Solves another issue, you get to eat too. Just bring it in and fry it up. YUMMY. 2 birds with one cat……Do that long enough and maybe you can save up enough to buy a Deep Purple Concert ticket.
As for your sound system, I just went by my recollection of your complaints about your sound system. No biggie. So, maybe you are just deaf then….LOL.

The ONLY thing wrong with Cal Jam is the sound quality? Oh that’s right, Blackmore was in the band. All was well then. I guess you must have missed those dreadful MK2 songs they ‘castrated’. I remember actually watching LIVE on TV when it aired. I also remember all too well how I cringed when they did the MK2 material. Funny how you and others claim Gillan wouldn’t be able to do MK3 songs justice. Well, I’d have to state here that there is nothing worst in the Purple legacy than those God Awful MK3/4 attempts at the MK2 material. JMHO.

Mind you, I started in 1977, unlike you, and had a lot to absorb to get a good picture of The Purple Family and what had happened.
God, wish I had known that they were still around and doing great.
Maybe then I would not have missed out on :

Gillan in Bruinisse
Rainbow in The Hague(Twice!!!)
It took me that long perhaps because I lived in a little village totally into what was fashionable like Disco and Punk and completely anti older ones.
I once head the name of Jimi Hendrix on my jacket.

Many years later later generations would elevate Hendrix, Pink Floyd , Zeppelin and Sabbath to even higer appreciations.
Unlike The Purps, I think.
I bought a music magazine solely for the inclusion of a stampformat pic of the band.
Once I found my Holy Grail in the poster printed in 1 or 2 mags which was one, I realised that years later, from the FIREBALL sessions.
It’s weird : I cringed hearing him doing Mistreated.
Somehow , I already heard the album, it did seem very wrong.
I agree his renditions of MK 2 tunes are not ahem top notch.
But hey, his style is different.And hey, BLACKERS in the band, count me in!!! : )
I also think Gillan would not do justice to MK 3 or 4 tunes. You probably think otherwise : )
I might be very wrong, but we ll never know.
It’s like feeling Morse is not the right one how great and wonderful he may be in other , ahem, fields.
Kinda appreciate that last solo album by him.
But, again, too often not right for the DP sound.
I always loved his heavy fat riffing of old MK 2 tunes like Into The Fire and Living Wreck, but his solo’s are always the same and terrible soundwise.
Have to go now for another torture, the dentist.
December 12th, 2011 at 09:56Yeah, that’s one thing we lacked here in the States. Gillan Band, Rainbow and Whitesnake in the early 80’s (or at least in my neck of the woods). As for Gillan doing MK3 material, I’d love the hear it. His renditions of Ozzy and DIO era Sabbath tunes were incredible. He took them to a whole different level. I believe he could do the same with MK3 stuff. Though a lot of his success with the Sabbath tunes was due to the fact that his high end register was so powerful then. Not quite the same today. That would hinder his attack on the MK3 material. But, I’d put his MK3 possibilities above Coverdale’s MK2 butchering. As for your Morse/Blackmore analogy relating to this….point taken. To each his own. But, I’ll bet that if we took a poll here on the numbers of folks disapproving of the MK3 covering the MK2 and the folks whom disapprove of Morse’s job with the MK2 material, I believe the scale of thumbs down would easily be heavier toward the MK3 era killing the MK2 material. I don’t have a problem with it sounding different. I like how the different MKs has given us quite a variety of PURPLE. But, the Coverdale/Hughes renditions of Highway Star, SOTW, etc. were actually painful.
