The boys were back in Copenhagen town

Another concert with DP on DP’s homeground, KB Hallen! Lots of good experiences before the concert when meeting souls-mates in town on their way to the concerthall and at the entrance of the hall.

Lights went out at aprr. 9.15 PM and after a piece of music, my favorite starter “Highway Star”! And then it went on and on for almost 2 hours of jumping, swetting, cheering and singing; I’m nearly 50 years old but not at a concert !

Very hot in the hall; so hot that Mr. Lead-bass Roger had to put his hands down into some powder to dry his hands and the neck of his awesome wood-bass. Good sound and very high volume; as it should be!

As always a good concert; I have seen them since 1975 Mrk. 3 in Gothenburg

I’m going to Aarhus later this year to see them again.

Soeren from Denmark

I´ve been to every show in Copenhagen since 1969 and this one was one of the good shows. Not the best but ABSOLUTELY not the worst.
Gillans voice is not as good anymore in the old songs but in the new songs it is awsome…
And Glover is getting better and better.. And “the boy” Steve Morse… What can I say? We almost didn´t miss Blackmore…. Paicey. What a drummer.. Don Airey. We almost didn´t miss Lord…

Yes it was a good concert, BUT this is Deep Purple whitout the magic as in old days. You know 100% what you get NO surprises at all. To mee that is not “my” Deep Purple like in old days. And they could do it. Keep 75% of the set and then cnhages 25% from concert to concert, and if tghey can play Hush; Wring That Neck, Paint it black, The Boys are Back in Town during these years with Morse then why not some MrkIII songs. That would help a LOT in the setlist. And why not “House of Pain”
I strongly request that DP in future will “Bring back the Magic” to the concerts. I’m sure they can, IF they want to get out this “Easy day at the office” way of doing things these days.
    Suprise us next time!!!

    Hi Finn
I want to say-No magic without Ritchie @ Jon.
It’s main reason between Mk2 and today’s line up.

They did your beloeved ‘HOP’ and it was scrapped simply because it didn’t work.(painful indeed)

The mkIII complaint is mute, this isn’t mkIII, and they didn’t produce any classics in the same sense as mkI did. It’s another day at the office, I agree with that, but the rest is moot.

People sure expect a lot from what is no spring chicken.

    Hi Crimson Ghost @5

I have seen Purple since 1971 and even worked with them in Scandinavia through ET Concerts, and I can agree that I cant expect today what happend 35 or more years ago.
But they could try to change more, not do the same and the same and the same every time. I remember HOP well, but the 2 times I saw HOP live it was ok, and the song is very much Deep Purple to me.
I dont understand your point of MRK I had more classics that MRk III. I will say BURN (one of DP best ever), Mistreated, Stormbringer, and the wonderfull Soldier of Fortune are FAR more classic than anything Mrk I did. Hush was not even DPs song, but the only real hit Mrk I had.

I still find DP as a first calss band, but with the name DEEP PURPLE you should expect a lot. To me the most important thing these days is to say hi to these great people – not the show. With Blackmore and Lord out I’m sad to say that I dont expect much for the future, but I hope I’m wrong.

Deep-Purple.Net is reporting that in an interview for the Istanbul show IG said that they were to begin work on a new album in February. I guess we’ll see what comes of that, considering in March of ’08 he said they’d start in February ’09. We’ll see:D.

    Re: #7

Bo, I agree that MK III had their share of classics. Certainly, “Burn” is as great a classic as *any* song in the entire Purple catalogue.

To your list we can add “Lady Double Dealer,” “Sail Away,” and “You Fool No One”. “The Gypsy” worked well live as well. Not bad for only two albums.

It may well be that this isn’t Deep Purple MKIII–but it *is* Deep Purple–a group with a very long pedigree and a heritage that should be acknowledged.

Besides–if the argument is that this isn’t Deep Purple Mk III, one could say that this isn’t Deep Purple Mk II, either.

I hope they’ll record a new album soon, and I sure hope that Gillans voice will recover. It’s been in a sad state lately, and live he’s having some really serious problems. I’m not trying to start a “Gillan bashing debate” here. I’m just stating what I’ve seen on many YouTube clips lately, and I hope it’s a passing thing since the band sounds very tight and on fire at the moment.

A Deep Purple devoting their gigs to newer material and extended jams would, I belive, be a highly interesting band for quite a few years

I think they should take time to record a new FIRST class Deep Purple ROCK album. It will Gillan time to get his voice back in shape and for the members to re-change batteries and do their own solo stuff.
A ROCK (like in HARD ROCK) does not have to have a Gillan +/- 1972 creaming all the way, “just” a Gilland with the voice of 2009 but fresh and without 300 concerts (more or less :-)) in one year.
Is that to much to ask for?
Look what AC/DC, Mettalica, Iron Maiden can do. They are selling BIG BIG time, beacuse they are fresh and they keep to what gave them their name. ROCK. My mig love of all time – Deep Purple – should do the same. And they can – if they want to.

You cant judge a band on what are for the most part, terrible recordings/videos on youtube! Often from mobile phones which just dont pick things up adequately to judge. Come on, surely thats fairly obvious! Yes Gillan was ill earlier this year (particularly in S America), but at all the shows ive been to on this tour, he’s back better than for a long while. He’s singing great, and looks like he’s really enjoying himself again on stage. Hopefully they will record an album as he has said……

    Bo:
I’m not the only one here who agrees that ‘HOP’ is sub-par.
You say it’s very Purple, well to me it sounds like a lifted Rainbow riff, and we can thank Michael Bradford for that, since Ian says he ‘wrote’ it all except for a few words, the title and harmonica bit. Add to it the intro that I swear is copied and pasted note for bloddy note from Dixie Dregs ‘Take It Off The Top’ intro…. check into it, I’m serious, it doesn’t even sound re-recorded, it sounds cut and paste to the max!

Anyway, mkIII were certainly a better band than mkI, but what came and went between 1976 and 1984-to present, has very little reflection on mkIII, who wound up being a band treading the success of mkII, so in the Purple camp mkIII since then has simply been regarded as territory they have no stake in, among other reasons not to play that material. I can understand it totally, others who prefere that line up or whatever, will be beating this dead subject to no end, but it is what it is, non Gillan style Purple, and since Gillan is of course in the Purple they decided to re-group, the reasons could not be more obvious as to why they don’t do that material, besides the fact that they don’t have the energy to pull it off night to night… think about it, that band were ferociously energetic, and “babay baby oh baby” is not Gillan’s forte.

It’s no different than Whitesnake covering Gillan sung Purple songs, they’re two great singers with completely different approaches, why do one anothers material? It makes no sense to me, it’s not about David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, it’s about Gillan and Glover, and has been since 1984.(covering mkI makes way more sense, perhaps thats why they do it… you don’t get back together for 20 some odd years and cover the guys who replaced you, especially when the tunes are such different animals. The revival was never about mkIII)

I’ve spent time around them too, and it makes no difference whatsoever, in fact the truth is, Gillan calls the setlist just as Blackmore once did, so it’s really not the entire band choosing what to play, it’s HIM.(maybe sad, just as it was with Blackmore IMO, but it’s true)

    Crimson Ghost says:

    @12

If you’ve worked in the industry you should know it’s about opportunities as they come, not as they go… you can’t run every department/aspect of it from the off stage perspective unless you’re in that sort of business. It may have once looked that way, but it was an illusion controlled by their youth.
I don’t care about how other bands ‘appear’ to keep doing it, they’re in completely different company… are you following?

    Chris Stobart says:

I’m sorry but anyone who wants the current DP to play songs from the Coverdale/Hughes era has clearly not been reading interviews with Gillan in recent years.

Gillan has clearly stated that while he thinks Coverdale and Hughes are nice guys, he doesn’t like listening to Purple stuff from that era as it’s like your wife sleeping with another bloke.

The point about Hush is a totally invalid one – (a) that’s a cover anyway and (b) the band were already playing that regularly when Gillan and Glover first joined.

The reformed Purple was never meant to be a nostalgic trawl through previous line-ups – it was the guys who were driven apart by the pressures of the Machine Head era picking up where they’d left off. It was when Gillan and Glover joined that the Purple rocket really took off after all.

Furthermore only Ian Paice remains from that line-up – if people want to hear Mk III stuff they can either go see Whitesnake or Glenn Hughes. It’s that simple.

    Agreed
But dont ya think they might as well try out some more MK 1 stuff?

    Bird has flown
    Painter
    Chasing Chadows
    Anthem
    And the Adress

    Etc

I was at the show. Had decided not to go but i was invited. Great revitalized playing of the exactly same reshufled setlist from last year. Much better actually. I was at the the first Metalica show out of 5 on the 20th of july in copenhagen. These guys have been playing nearly 60 different songs on their world tour so far. Lars keeps notes of all Metalica shows from the last 5-7 years and makes a new set list so the dont replay ther same shows. they actually change 8 songs per night. talk about dedication. im sick of tired of listening to Hush and black night as encores year after year.
