Doing it in Dubai!
What really impressed me about the concert was how tight the band was. These guys are one of the best live acts around. The other thing that was great to see was the smiles, laughter and respect for each other. They were having a great time on stage. The crowd were more into this concert than the previous 3 I’d seen. I think they need to visit the Middle East more often.
I’ve been a great fan of DP for many years and have been fortunate enough to see them 4 times 1984, 1993, 2003 and most recently last weekend in Dubai.
Having read recent comments about Gillan’s voice in Agentina I was a bit concerned before the concert but I am very pleased to report he came through with flying colours!! He sounded great and had plenty of punch when required!
As for the set list it had the usual minus – Wrong Man, Pictures of Home, Mary Long. Highway Star kicked it off then Things I Never Said, SKOW, Into the Fire… Ted the Mechanic and Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming were there as was Contact Lost.
A great heavy version of Space Truckin lead by Roger Glover with a heavy base sound. Smoke on the Water was followed by an encore of Hush and Black Night!!
Don’t give up on these guys yet. Fantastic show!!
A friend of mine went to this and she tells me Deep Purple were on form – a terrific night was had by all. Shame they’re only playing three venues in England this year though … 🙁
March 26th, 2009 at 23:15Nice to hear that Ian G. is coming around. Still, I think they should slow down a little bit with their tour timetable. As I can see, there are some 1-2 month long gaps in this year’s schedule – the questions are:
– will they be filled with more dates soon?
– will the band have more time for holidays, families etc.?
– will they start doing something around the new album?
Which option do you prefer ;)))?

March 31st, 2009 at 07:02I must have been at a different Dubai concert. I thought Purple were very poor. Gillan’s vocals were bordering on the atrocious at times. His vocals during the opening number -Highway Star – were awful. Throughout the concert he would sing a bit then disappear behind the stage and sing a line or two from there. When you are the focal point of the group – you have to be on your game – clearly he wasn’t. The songs felt as if they were played at a slower tempo than usual – it’s not hard to figure out why – Gillan clearly had his ‘sea legs’ on and not his ‘land legs.’I felt they were going through the motions at times. This is the first time ever I recall that Ian Paice didn’t do a drum solo. I have seen Purple since 1974 through all the line-ups and spin offs – Whitesnake, Paice Aston and Lord – and he always does one. But not tonight. I left very disappointed with their performance. It’s not easy to write this about my all time favourite band – but I travelled a long way and spent a lot of money to get there so I think I’m justified to comment. If they ever return to Dubai I doubt if I would go and see them. Nothing lasts forever, but I have some of the best memories of gigs with Deep Purple.
