Was that the ghost of Tawny Kitaen jumping into the frame at 01:26?
And say what you will about Russian household appliances design, but that robot vacuum cleaner (‘ALIEN 2024 – cleans with the power of acidic blood’) in the opening scene of the Stalker vid is really neat!
Joe still has a sharp voice suitable for hard rock songs, but also very modulable for the sweeter 80’s style panty-ripping songs.
one of the few that still embellishes any song.
He’s always been a versatile singer, more versatile than either RJD or Graham Bonnet, though both had the more individual voices – even versatility has its price. Most singers have one or two voices at their command, Joe has a whole bunch of them and his voice has largely held up. I think his versatility is what got him the job both with Rainbow and DP, Blackmore felt both times that Joe’s voice would not hold him back no matter which direction Ritchie would choose to go.
I mean even those two new vids he has now done: The Bulgarian one is essentially cheesy 80s power ballad AOR and the Russian one melodic power metal/symphonic metal, neither is my cup of tea, but he performs equally well in both.
I’m happy to see that he now leaves the wig at home. And that bald pate is an idiosyncratic look anyway, those wigs dated him badly.
Also, he seems to have carved out a niche for himself in Bulgaria (no doubt through his prolonged and repeated work with Nikolai Kotzev’s Brazen Abbot
and likewise in Russia (I won’t get into the geo-political side of things), good for him, I’m happy to see any ex-DP member in sound financial conditions and not just scratching by. Joe’s tenures with Rainbow and DP weren’t among my most favorite phases of these bands, but he can and did sing.
Flash thought: I have a hunch that the Bulgarian Board for Seaside Tourism was heavily invested in the making of Maria & Joseph’s ‘Forever’ vid. Its message at 03:40 is clear: Come to Bulgaria, you gorgeous couples of the world, and engage in some impromptu romantic wig w(h)am bam on our beaches in a tipi tent! Now that’s a positive, immediately relatable message.
With one caveat: I know, sex on the beach is a great part of urban mythology, but if I may offer a slice of personal experience: It tends to be – ouch! – a grainy affair. File under: overrated. More im-Po-Sand than imposant for our German readers.
This version sounds like they dropped the original key, but that is fine by me. At 72 at the time of this performance, he sings it really well.
Joe, a man of many talents, also dabbled in acting, did you know? Copious amounts of dry ice, a slightly disoriented blonde and a sultry night liner scene with an outsize guitar-shaped bed should not unduly perturb you, this is – except perhaps in the more rural regions of Tasmania – safe for work @13:30:
on the second link: great acting (so to speak!), great look and nice song of a healthy AoR!
on the first link: Stone Cold is one of the most difficult Rainbow songs to sing, Joe still does it well, the tune is lowered, but the intonation and interpretation are those of a great singer like he is!
And I thought I had seen it all! I mean … fog inside a bus … now here’s something to write home about. Uwe, thanks for saving this gem before it was to drown in obscurity for ever. Unbelieveable. And it fits Joelene like a glove.
No one likes to hear this here, I know, but in terms of vocal control, Joe is likely a better singer than Rod Evans, Ian Gillan or David Coverdale. I’m leaving out Glenn Hughes because I find his amount of control (if he puts his mind to it) similar, however his voice is very much more love-or-hate as we all know here.
Joe deserves credit for that and if he finds it more willingly granted in Bulgaria and Russia than in the US of A or the UK, then I can’t blame him for seeking it there.
I despise multi-artist packages, but I will see him next year in Germany all the same:
Speaking of Glenn Hughes, he will be doing something similar too in 2025 (Not that this site of sites deemed this worthy a mention, tsk, tsk, tsk, after all who’s Glenn Hughes?), following Big Ian’s footsteps:
Which means that us Krauts will get to see Glenn thrice next year: With the Rock Meets Classic cabaret show in spring, with Black Country Communion in the summer,
All very nice but do these artists know all their back catalogue will become Joe’s back catalogue and he will sing your songs live as if they are his own.(;
I’ve always envied the Germans for the privilege that bands reserve for you, but it must be said that you are the European people most devoted to rock and metal ever (except maybe little Finland)
Fla76, Germany being such an attractive touring territory has to do with the sheer size of our market/population, that federalist Germany has historically many urban centers/regions and not just one that dominates all others (like London or Paris) plus that well into the 90s we had a sizable contingent of American and English troops stationed with us who were avid concert goers for American and English rock groups. I remember gigs in the Offenbach Stadthalle before acts such as Blue Öyster Cult and Ted Nugent where half the audience and more were GIs. Without the Armed Forces segment, it wouldn’t have made any sense for these bands to tour venues of that size. This was especially true for where I come from, the Rhein-Main-Neckar Region around Frankfurt, Hanau, Wiesbaden and Mannheim/Heidelberg.
The GIs are mostly long gone these days, but Germany has become an established happy hunting ground for international rock acts because of also them.

And at 16:33 there is even ‘Losing You’ from Joe’s underrated solo debut with ex-Foreigner keysman Al Greenwood (an unsung AOR masterpiece).
December 2nd, 2024 at 10:13Same goes for those oh-so-romantic gettogethers in the field or in the woods. Ants…I say… ants. And don’t get me started on hay.
December 2nd, 2024 at 16:00Oh yes, ant hills can be memorable. And I suffer from allergies too …
Nature is a beast.

December 6th, 2024 at 09:30You forgot Denmark 😉
Most of Denmark is really German, so it was kinda included.
December 6th, 2024 at 15:42@15
Ain’t you adorable 🤓
When we take away the currency, language and general way of living you might have something there 😉
What do Denmark have in common with Germany??
December 7th, 2024 at 05:46Oohhh yes: you people seem to love our beaches almost as much as we do 🪼🎣🏄🏻♂️🏖️
