Truly sensational
A website aptly called Maximum Volume Music reviews the Birmingham gig of the band that once held the title of the loudest band in the world:
From that song to that riff, and the main set ends with arguably the best ever, and as Simon McBride starts it up, all of a sudden the crowd are up, but there’s a chap who’s a steward, and he’s walking around doing that involuntary head nod thing that people do when there’s a riff you can’t ignore.
But here’s the thing about “Smoke On The Water”, it’s recognised the world over because it’s fantastic.
There are many in the course of this hour and 50 minutes, but for every “Highway Star” here, there’s something new.

Thanks to Tobias Janaschke for the heads-up.
Yup, that about sums it up. I did get there earlier enough to see Reef. Not familar with their stuff but enjoyable all the same. Much better than Purple’s previous support act when I saw them last (Europe – apols to any Europe fans).
Purple were what I expected. I’d stopped seeing them on the last couple of tours after seeing them on every tour since Knebworth with the exception of House of Blue Light (as I had a broken leg). I felt that it was just running through the motions although the quality of musican ship was always high. But I had to see them with the new youngster!
And it did not disappoint! Simon did have tunning issues prior to New Fangled Thing and had to go off for a minute or so. I guess the song required different tunning as it was not just a straight guitar swap. I think that the gtr tech messed up somehow as I saw Simon give him a consoling pat on the back later. Things like this happen coz its live and that’s what makes it for me.
There’s a lot of vids on youtube with bands like eagles/roger waters using auto correction and backing tapes: None of that here!
If you haven’t seen them yet then do so!
