Catch them while you can

BraveWords reviews the Cincinnati gig from August 21, 2024. This, being a specifically musical website, digs quite a bit deeper than the other two recent offerings.

While Yes’ set was perhaps more orchestrated and focused more on earlier material, Deep Purple, on the other hand, gave us a more jam band feel, and played some deeper cuts. Kudos for not playing the same show over and over. I wish more bands varied their set lists. Purple does not have many special effects – just a screen. The stage is pretty bare except for the band. “Highway Star” led off the set. I can’t think of a better song to get the energy pumping. They then went straight into new material with “A Bit on the Side” from the new =1, and then deeper cuts from In Rock, “Hard Lovin’ Man” and “Into The Fire.”

That looks like a well balanced set list. Not that I care. Im just happy that they are still out there playing at such a high level. In the world we’re living in today this band is a gift from the gods.

Took my adult son to see Yes and DP in Atlantic City NJ on Aug 30th. Yes performed a good set and Steve Howe was in fine form. DP came out on fire with Highway Star and stayed on fire for entire set. Simon kept his foot on the gas and kicked ass all night with a very heavy sound. Big Ian was strong and engaged with audience all night. Don was his usual brilliant self on the keys, while Roger and little Ian continue to be the best percussion section on the planet. The set list was a very satisfying mix of old and new material, with the new =1 songs blending right in and performed with passion and precision. Overall a great performance. Thank you DP!

Couldn’t make the Jones theatre show but a couple of diehard DP friends got to go. They’ve seen Purple with RB and SM. Their impression was that it was a by the numbers performance. Hard Lovin Man was a good one. Felt the crowd was luke warm to the new stuff and my friends felt the songs may have blended in ok with the set but weren’t all that different from there basic songs unlike Uncommon Man which stood out and was more appreciated by the crowd. Another comment was that Airey had far too much isolated soloing which kind of lost the crowd. Overall a good performance but not anything special was their synopsis.

I also saw them in Atlantic City. They were everything that #2 said. The only difference being that the band was not only on fire but they were a nuclear explosion. Yes was first. I never liked them but they played a great set. The instrumentals were very good. The singer was awful. Then came Purple. They came, they conquered, they blew the roof off that casino. Gillan sounded great. Simon roared. Glover and Paice kept things moving. Phenominal playing. Don on keys a maestro. They opened with Highway Star and never looked back. Full on petal to the floor. If this is the last time I see them I can honestly say they went out with a bang. A very loud very big bang.
