A buzz and a bounce
A couple of months before the recently featured Roger’s favourite Deep Purple tracks, Louder Sound had published a similar list from Paicey:
Highway Star (Machine Head, 1972)
“Not how it started in the studio, Highway Star became a monster on stage. And it’s still a monster. It’s almost like a template of how a hard rock band playing a rock’n’roll tune should be. It was really well-performed on the Machine Head record and the solos from Jon and Ritchie are incredibly interesting. The feel of the whole thing is so right.”
Speaking of Louder Sound features, there’s also a short story of how back in 1971 Roger got into a bit of bother with HM Customs over his newly acquired Rickenbacker 4001.
Thanks to MacGregor for pointing out the Paicey feature.
Yo,
IP said qt.”It’s almost like a template of how a hard rock band playing a rock’n’roll tune should be”…
+1 here !
Peace !

😂
May 16th, 2024 at 11:55@2: links to both stories were botched, should be fixed now. our apologies.
May 16th, 2024 at 12:52Na gut. Reprisals suspended. 😉
Good ole Roger the Rickentrafficker wanted to be pennywise and ended up poundfoolish! 😁 As someone who has imported a lot of basses from the States I can tell you:
Don’t …
even …
think …
about …
cheating …
customs!
We must thank the fearless officers of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs for the boundless leniency they showed the longhaired hippie culprit/smuggler. Had they kept that Ric impounded, Machine Head would haven been recorded with a Fender Precision (meaning you wouldn’t have heard it well just like on In Rock) or a Fender Mustang (meaning it would have had no balls just like on Fireball), shudder the thought!
May 16th, 2024 at 16:23Ian’s choices are solid, especially like that he chose Morse era tunes! Interesting both he and RG chose Rat Bat Blue. I would swap Space Truckin for SKOW and Any Fu for SIFLS, but he’s the real original so what he says goes!! ; )
May 16th, 2024 at 18:50Yes it was good to see both players from the engine room mention Rat Bat Blue. A wonderful song it is & a personal favourite from that album. Not great lyrics but they don’t get in the way of a fantastic arrangement & superb playing. Nothing from In Rock & Fireball from Ian Paice. I suppose they cannot mention everything. There must be so many that they probably would but limiting it it a few songs would be hard at times. If you asked them the next day it would probably contain a few different songs & so on & so on. Cheers.
May 16th, 2024 at 23:05Further damning evidence has come to light re the apprehended customs evading Welshman (always an unruly tribe) and I would like to share it with you:

The amount of criminal energy of Mr Glover is truly astounding, history of DP needs to be rewritten.

May 18th, 2024 at 09:04Ian Paice has mentioned the song Burn before as one of his favourites, from my memory. These favourite lists are subject to different days, it depends on what they remember at that time & they do change depending on the memory. Very hard to limit things to one list, especially as it is a top ten or some rather small number after 50 years or so. Cheers.
May 18th, 2024 at 22:26Got to be hard to pick a favorite- to many great songs to choose from!
May 19th, 2024 at 16:25Every time I listen to a Deep Purple song it’s my favorite!
Highway Star, my ATF as well.

Very-well-said !

May 20th, 2024 at 10:09Seems like someone is out to ‘annoy’ Ian Paice. Only 5 songs from Ian Gillan this time. Cheers.
