Masters of Rock at Parque de la Ciudad

A pro shot video of an almost complete Deep Purple’s concert in Buenos Aires on April 28, 2023, appeared on YouTube. It looks like the feed that is shown on the giant video monitors during the show, so the editing and the sound can be a bit iffy at times. It is still a couple of steps above the usual smartphone fare. The video has been already taken down at least once by the copyright police and appeared back, so hurry up, as it may disappear for good any time now.

    They are now playing “Into the Fire” instead of “Nothing at all”.

    Rajaseudun Rampe says:

    Uh, interesting. No Highway Star in the setlist. This must have been a shortened slot for the band.

    Rajaseudun Rampe says:

    They have a pretty good banjo player, again, in the band. I like just love his playing.

    mike whiteley says:

    Judging by this, the “handful of gigs every few months” schedule is working quite well.
    Seems there is still lots of gas in the tank.

    Dirk says:

    #2 Highway Star is in the setlist, it’s just not there in the video (see above).

    Steve says:

    Gillan is singing brilliantly …must have got his strength back after growing his hair again ( like Samson ! ) Surely , he deserves some sort of award …he’s nearly 80 now !

    My favourite band in the whole world …but , I do fear they are becoming a bit of a cabaret act ! …come on guys..vary the solos a bit !

    Kalle says:

    “Highway Star” was played after the intro, before “Pictures Of Home”.
    A video in the same quality of HST exists.
    Maybe the video missed it due to time limits.

    I do worry about Ian Gillan pushing hard like that on certain songs. He looks & sounds like he is struggling at times. It is what it is at this moment in time in his life & after recent events I guess he just needs to keep going. Hope he is ok. Cheers.

    George Martin says:

    I’m surprised they would replace Nothing At All with Into The Fire. I would think that Nothing At All is much easier to sing what with no screaming or yelling compared to Into The Fire. I would think there are many other choices that would be great and not put a strain on his voice but I’m not the one singing it so if it’s o.k. with him it’s o.k with me.

    It won’t be before long that nothing from the Steve Morse era will remain in the set. I was expecting that. It’s hard to do Steve’s busy guitar arrangements justice and controlled attention to detail is not really Simon’s forte, he’s a choppy rhythm player of the Rory Gallagher/Gary Moore school (both excellent soloists, but not obsessed with creating intricate rhythm parts). It’s not that Simon doesn’t have the necessary chops to play Steve Morse songs, it’s just not his style, he prefers raising hell playing Blackmore songs!

    The next tour following an album with Simon will feature Mk II material (perhaps with some rare cuts) and a handful of songs from the then new album, mark my words.

    mike whiteley says:

    Hi,George.
    Into the Fire fit better with the Monsters Of Rock Festival crowd,I suspect.

    Mirko says:

    I’m disappointed to see deep purple open for Scorpions and Kiss. When your name is Deep Purple and you are a legend, you must remain a legend.
    I’m 50 years old and I’ve been following Deep Purple since I was 7, I’ve seen them 18 times, since 1987 in all formations and it breaks my heart to see them downgrading to do more important concerts.
    Unfortunately today’s Deep Purple are no longer a great live show, they play the songs very well but they don’t attract new spectators and at this point I would say that it is enough. Simon is a wonderful guitarist, but gentlemen, Steve couldn’t make Ritchie forget, how can he succeed?
    Long live Rock’n’roll

    @11
    I never thought about that but if that’s the case Fireball should have been played instead and Speed King should have replaced When A Blind Man Cries, just my opinion.

    @10
    I think there will always be something in the set list from the Steve Morse era. Maybe not a lot but at least a couple of songs will always be there. I can’t imagine them completely ignoring it.

    G N Lidiard says:

    Since when did Graham Bonnet learn guitar and join Deep Purple?

    He’s pretty good too!

    Loved the careful choice of tone Vs song, very stratty tones for the early stuff really suited, modern for the more recent – overall, the youngster did well (possibly better than the oldies!).

    Daniel says:

    DP without any improvisation is wrong by definition. The way they still cling to Machine Head like a lifeboat, offering up straight renditions year in and year out, is a bit sad considering the artistic growth shown on their studio albums. Plant said it best: “My peers may flirt with cabaret – some fake the rebel yell. Me, I’m moving up to higher ground – I must escape their hell.” Maybe if they had taken a more loose approach and opened up to true improvisation, things could become exciting once again. But they seem to be stuck in a rut. DP should be anything but scripted.

    Uwe Hornung says:

    GNL: Herr Bonnet takes issue with your statement in no uncertain terms!!!

    @13 Thanks for posting that.

    @13 Don’t get hung up on the order of the bands. DP played to a packed audience who really got into the performance. If you watch the clip that has Pictures of Home, you’ll hear the audience what chanting the riff right from the beginning.

    @13&18 And they are playing as the sun goes down (haven’t we seen that before?)

    I was reticent to go beacuse I don’t like festivals, but finally I went and it was a beautiful show. Everyone in fine form. Lots of young people singing the riffs and guitar leads wich was a surprise to me.
    Hope there will be another chance to see them… like we used to, just the band on a large show, with improvisations… This was a good half an hour very enjoyable.

    Gregster says:

    Yo, so I was finally able to download the show, & what a ripper…The whole band is delivering-the-goods much better than anticipated imo…I only wanted to watch the 1st-5-minutes or so, & save the rest for later tonight, but watched the whole show, as it was so engaging.

    Well done boys !!! (Hush is the word) ;)…

    Peace !

    Deep Purple is my favorite band since… 1974 when I was only 10 years old and I got the album Made in Japan as a gift from my father. I’m still hopeful they’ll do some shows with songs they’ve rarely, if ever, played live.
    Peace and love to everyone here

    Mirko: That bands reverse the role of opener and main act is nothing new. Nazareth opened for Mk IV, Whitesnake two years later for Nazareth. The Scorpions have opened for Purple and vice versa, in some markets, Scorpions are more popular, in others Purple is. Around the time of the DP reunion, Aerosmith opened for Purple, that wouldn’t happen today anymore. When Lynyrd Skynyrd double-headlined with Purple on a US tour, they would change the sequence around, depending on who had more sales in the venue’s region. But when Purple toured Europe, Lynyrd Skynyrd opened (and sometimes gave DP a hard time!) because Purple is the more prominent band over here.

    Frankly, once you have reached the maturity and the status of a band like Purple, you should be above who headlines where and when as long as you have a good sound, good lights and get to play your set. If Ian Gillan had issues being “just an opener” for Klaus Meine or Paul Stanley, I’d be scratching my head.

    I always rated Purple highly for jumping in as an ad hoc replacement for Oasis who were to headline a Brit Pop festival in Konstanz, Germany, in 2009, but split up a few days before due to the usual sibling rivalry. So Purple – hired at the last minute by the promoter out of desperation – played before an audience alien to them, but judging from this excerpt

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Lmqi9BOOA0

    people who had hoped to see Noel & Liam still felt entertained.
