It’s only rock’n’roll

rock-n-roll-magazine-nr-2-2023

The latest issue (#2/2023) of the Swedish Rock’n’Roll magazine has a 5-page feature on Ritchie Blackmore pre-Deep Purple. The issue can be ordered directly from the publisher, with fairly reasonable shipping rates, even overseas. Caveat: naturally, it’s all in Swedish.

Thanks to our editor emeritus Benny Holmström for the info.

Nice to see Ritchie play a PRS, fetching headwear too.

I need to focus more …

@1…Oh that’s Candice, Ritchie’s further along to the right in the B&W photograph…Regardless, it must be nice to be remembered & appreciated !

    Peace !

You’re of course right, Gregster, as always. It is Candice, I should have known. Ritchie’s ultimate path to her and all things Renaissance were obviously fore(moon)shadowed even in the innocent 60ies …

Sort of related: I never knew Ritchie even registered with David Bowie!

I knew that Bowie’s and early DP’s paths had crossed on festivals in the late 60ies/early 70ies and that Bowie plus Glenn Hughes had lived together in the mid-70ies with (never materialized) plans for Bowie to produce Glenn’s solo album (Bowie also recommended to Glenn to continue with Purple after Ritchie’s departure and look for a new lead guitarist, Tommy Bolin was probably to his liking).

Interesting comment regarding Blackmore. I do remember Fripp talking about a few British guitarists 20 years ago, or thereabouts. He signalled out Robin Trower & said of Ritchie Blackmore, ‘an astonishing player’. From my memory of reading one of his online diaries I think. And that comment was about the very early days, possibly even back into the 1960’s. Cheers.

Ritchie’s guitar playing was outstanding at the time, and his style was very evident on the first 3 Purple albums
