Thanks for all the great sounding records (and always mixing the bass up loud!), Martin, and I don’t mean just the Purple & Family ones. Bร–C’s Cรผltosaurus Erectus and Fire Of Unknown Origin are favourites as well.

Farewell to the “catalyst”, as the Purps christened him in the In Rock liner notes.

Sad to hear this news. Martin Birch was a genius in the music studio & can be easily & favorably compared to George Martin of the Beatles. His work on albums by DP, BOC, WS, BS & IM lifted their music to a higher level & made their albums very special indeed.
My sincere condolences go out to Martin Birch’s family & friends. ๐Ÿ˜” ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’โ›ชโŒ›

In terms of having an outstanding output on the founding records of hard rock and classic rock – no one could touch Martin Birch. His works are now pillars of this genre of music. Just take the string of these 5: In Rock, Made In Japan, Rising, Heaven And Hell and The Number Of The Beast – you can’t get much better than this. Plus they are a landmark of how the proper mixing should be done to sound brilliant. As Robert Fripp says on those sad occasions: “Travel safe, brother Martin”. Thank you for all the goods and sonic pearls that never cease to excite, ignoring the passing of time and advances of technology.

Martin Birch was the first “record producer” I was actually aware of, followed by Purple’s previous producer, Derek Lawrence, who died just a few months ago. Very sad news.

  42. 42
    rock voorne says:

    What a loss.

On the other hand, he already left the building in a musical sense in 1992?

What was the reason he never ventured into producing again at such a young age?

Was he reallt able to retire on the basic of what he had done. Royalties?

  43. 43
    ivica says:

DP family sad,..one best his production moment for me ? “Fool For You Loving”bass line by Neil Murray and David voice…R.I.P.

  44. 44
    uwe hornung says:

I once read that Martin experienced severe hearing loss early on which is why he never got involved in any remasters either. 25 years of hard rock sound engineering had taken their toll on the Wasp’s ears …
