Gillan sells himself short. He’s good at woodworking, writing, conceptualizing. Telling a humorous story. Being humble and kind with fans. As far as other musicians he likes, Big Ian once told me he liked/respected Nazareth front man Dan McCafferty’s unique singing voice – and met him backstage in 1969. He told me that after someone walked by us backstage in Clarkston, Michigan wearing a Nazareth shirt. We were all having a beer, sitting around on couches after a DP gig: IG, Michael Lee Jackson, Darby O’Toole and myself.
