Another couple of years

Another one of numerous interviews Ian Gillan gave to the British media promoting his Vinyl Collection. Amid stories of drinking, smoking, and messing with women in the times gone by, he also mentioned that the new Purple album will be out in February, the tour will start in May, and the band “in reality” probably has “another couple of years” in it.

Caution: it is about 10 minutes of the telephone interview stretched over with music to almost an hour.

Thanks to Nigel Young for the info.

Hmmmm. He believes in GOD but says Man Made GOD….. What GOD does he friggin’ believe in?

As for his comments about the couple of years left in DP, man that really got me. I know it has to end eventually but I can say that the reality of that hit me right in gut. One thing I do hope they do is a Final Album in 2018 which would mark and celebrate 50 Years of the Greatest Band in the WORLD. Something special. Album… Tour and then who knows. But man wouldn’t it be great if they would do this album in February and then jump back in the studio and do the 50th Anniversary Album? Maybe even allow for some guest shots from prior members for a song or 2. Yeah I know…. Tooth Fairy idea but what a great send off that would be. Classy I might add….

Wel well well. Ian admitting it may well be it final 2 year tour with DP. It will be a sell out and it will be the final curtain. I don’t know who can ever fill their boots.

A couple of years sounds about right.

You know, just as a matter of interest…. Ricky Medlocke of the classic rock band Blackfoot hired some young hotshot players to perform as & actually be the Blackfoot band, whilst Ricky continues to play with Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s the best way to keep the band / brand alive & throw it out there to the newer generations.

Wonder if the proprietors of the Purps would ever consider such a bold & brave move to keep the band machine rolling after they’ve retired… If they hand picked the new members themselves, it could be the best DP ‘tribute’ band in the world. I’d appreciate anyone’s thoughts on this.

    Smiles to ya!.

This would be the same as FAKE FOREIGNER. They are doing well with their banjo player (Mick Jones) only playing at selected shows. Paul Stanley of Kiss said it was his dream to have a new band carry on the Kiss tradition. I would probably go to one show – then bitch about it because I am anal!! LMAO!

    They handpicked Steve Morse themselves.
    Enough said.

That happened already. It was called Bogus Purple 1980.

@3: Nope, I can’t see that working! As a life long DP freak, I just couldn’t take such a band seriously and I think the idea has huge downside with very little upside across the hard rock loving population.

To quote another British band of some distinction – let it be…

Interesting proposal. Both YES and Deep Purple are good examples of the potential of such an idea. Over the years they have had a revolving door of players coming in and out and back into those bands. New blood is brought in every so often to continue carrying the torch. In fact that was the original premise at the creation of Roundabout, which ultimately became Deep Purple.

In Purple’s case, the closest the band has come to that state is Mark IV, with only Lord and Paice remaining as originals. Many observers thought, including Lord and Tommy Bolin themselves, that the band was no longer really truly Deep Purple, and should therefore have been called something else instead.

So I am wondering if the fans and musical community would really warm to the idea of a band recording and touring under Deep Purple’s name in the absence of any of the original members, even if endorsed by one or more of them.

Much as I would love to see Deep Purple continue forever, I am thinking that ultimately the machine would run out of gas without some true original connection to its past.

So I think its probably best that when the Purps decide it is truly the end, that the band name be retired, to be remembered as one of the greatest there ever was.

    Actually BR @3.

On your Passing the Torch idea, I would rather the band just continue on and replace each other through attrition as has always been done in the past. As one wishes to leave or ‘retire’, hunt for a qualified replacement. As has been done over the last 48 years. We at MK8. Anther couple of MKs would be fine with me. Shutting it down and putting together 5 totally new replacements would actually be just as you stated…. a Tribute Band. There are already a few really good ones out there. Demon’s Eye, Purpendicular, Pure Purple, Shades of Purple, Black Nights, Purple in Rock, just to name a few. I would have no problem with the band making the decision to continue on and phase people out and replace as they go. That is how we got all of these great line-ups over the years and I see no reason why it couldn’t work again. MK1 was born in 1968 and we got 3 albums in 2 years with some great classic tracks. Then Simper and Evans were sacked and replaced with Gillan and Glover creating MK2. We thought it was over when Gillan and Glover left in 1973… we got 2 more great albums with MK3 when Coverdale and Hughes came on board. Then Ritchie left and we thought it was over… Bolin comes in and anther great album is unveiled with MK4. Tommy dies and we thought it was over. MK2b reunites 8 years later for another couple of great albums and then Gillan is fired. In comes JLT for another good album with MK5. He is sacked and Gillan returns for yet another great album with MK2c. Ritchie leaves again and Joe Satriani fills in for 4 shows and is considered and asked to stay on but has prior commitments and declines the offer.. MK6. Then comes Steve Morse and we get 2 more great albums with MK7. Jon Lord leaves and in comes Don Airey for 3 more great albums and another one the way in February, MK8. At this point I actually do think the obvious thing to do is just let it continue to evolve and manifest along until the end of time….

No original band should ever allow itself to become a tribute band, period! How demeaning, how superficial, how false etc, etc!
It is who composes & creates the music & works themselves into the ground, not pretenders pretending to be someone else! Cashing in on someone else’ creativity & energy! We already live in a world that is becoming more & more pretentious & shallow! And Corrupt! Enough! NOTHING lasts forever & I personally find it a concern, that some cannot let go. The classy & professional way to go out, is to put it to bed, forever! Cheers.

    Deeper Purps @8 & Tracy @9,
    We really are Deep People!.
I feel sadness thinking of my favourite bands & artists growing old & retiring… that’s when I start grasping at straws & then try thinking of ways to keep the show on the road.

Years ago I saw a Canned Heat show on DVD in which the drummer pointed out that there were no longer any original members left in the band, but still they just carry on.

Lynyrd Skynyrd has only Garry Rossington left of the original crew. Molly Hatchet was for years without any original members until Dave Hlubek was rehired on guitar.

The so called Australian band ‘The Little River Band’ has no original members in it & certainly no Australians left in it!. But all these bands just carry on recording & touring.
Now Angus Young of AC/DC is facing this same challenge… he’s the only original left in the band… however, like TMIB with his Rainbow, Angus’s unique guitar sound is what AC/DC is made of.

I’m a huge fan of guitarist Mark Zyk, he’s the only guitarist I know of that actually truly clones Mr B’s sound & style so perfectly. If the choice were mine to ever select a replacement for Steve Morse or TMIB, then I’d choose Mark Zyk.

As for the other DP members, who could take their places from the younger generations?. Perhaps Adam Wakeman on keyboards?. But who could carry Ian’s unique drum style?.
Anyway, this is all just whimsy, so no points lost for any suggestions offered!.
    Be happy.

    @ 3:

I’m not at all convinced by the idea to carry on with different, younger musicians. How should they even compare to legends?! For everything there is to enjoy in life, there is a certain period of time – that’s the way it is and should be. Our heros put out a lot of music over the years, there’s so much we can listen to (and also watch) – both in the studio and live department. Let’s be grateful and happy for that. When Purple retires then we have to move on too …

    Blackwood Richmore @ 11..

Yes it is all just thrown around for fun here. As I stated at the beginning of my entry above… the mortality thing just kind of hit me and reality is what it is. You are in good company here regarding not wanting to let go and wishing it could continue forever. I would never support Purple quitting and then 5 new people take it over. The only thing that would work is what has worked all along. Natural change through attrition. That way the integrity and continuity would maintain a proper evolution. And of course to piggy back on my point regarding the present “Blackmore’s Night-mare”, a new album would have to come out showcasing each new line-up change AS HAS ALWAYS BEEN. Man, talk about whipping a dead painted horse…..

    RV @ 13…
No bro, I didn’t forget them. That is why I used the term “to name a few”. “Come Taste the Band” is another one. Take the best of these and I’m sure we would get an really good Shade of Purple. One by one or two is a-ok with me. Just not all at once. It is kind of like the KISS situation. Way back when Ace Frehley left and Vinnie Vincent came in, he used his own make-up and it was legit. Eric Carr took Peter Chris spot and he too sported his own make-up and that too worked OK. Then the make-up came off and as members changed that worked too. The Make-up and Original band regrouped and that was Perfect. Then Ace and Peter left again but this time are replaced by Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer wearing peter and Aces make-up….. WRONG!!! New member, new identity.
