This is excellent news if the sound quality is good enough. Such a pity only a small part of the visual elements remain.

Granfathers of all the world!!!!! Another show in cd and dvd !!!!!!! 36 years…..

  13. 13
    Butch says:

I don’t think the CD is the complete performance. The show was 100 minutes. Missing ‘love’s no friend’ too.

  14. 14
    kazz says:

The CD for sure is NO complete performance as Man On The Silver Mountain and Love’s No Friend are missing here. I guess Edel didn’t want it to release it as a 2CD. As far as my info goes, the recording originates from a bootleg. Just ignore this one and wait for a ‘Deluxe Edition’ with the full show.

    John Tartaglia says:

    LoL

  16. 16
    Paul Deblond says:

    Man On The Silver Mountain.

    Alan says:

Further to my previous comment the track listing given is not the full set as they also performed Love’s no friend and Man on the silver mountain. Has it been edited as the full set would not fit on a single CD. After waiting almost 36 years I would have hoped for the full set !

    Scott W says:

Anyone but me notice that the dvd image is sharper and they used alternate camera angles? I have the Light in The black box set and this show is included but with the more well known camera edits/angles. I may have to get this then. The cd has been bootleged in good quality for years so that is not really needed but, if they made it the complete show then yes!

    Anthony says:

Great! but as always we get a half assed cd with missing tracks. As fantastic a drummer and keyboard player Cozy and Don are, they could have omitted the drum and keyboard solos and included the two missing tracks, then again that’s going against the grain of a well thought product

    IKEN says:

I got the whole show on tape,i don’t know if it’s playable any longer, but back then i thought that the sound was ”okay” throuhg my rather large HiHi-set…..But that was then, this is now and i will buy this release!

  21. 21
    Alan says:

Kazz @ 14. Where did you get your info on the source of this recording ?

  22. 22
    Jerry says:

So much supposition by so many. The reason it is not complete is because some of the reels could not be located. And it’s not taken from a bootleg.

  23. 23
    Andrew says:

The Japanese edition contains 2 CDs, but Love’s No Friend and MOTSM are still missing. The blurb on http://www.amazon.co.jp notes this (relevant part reproduced below), so unless another source is found this is as good as it’s going to get.

    当日演奏された「ラヴズ・ノー・フレンド」「銀嶺の覇者」の音源は残念ながら現存しておらず、本作への収録はならなかったが

    Google Translate:
Sound source was played the day “Loves No Friend,” “Ginrei winner” is not extant unfortunately, but did not become the Journal to this work

    Andrew says:

Further to my previous comment, the missing two songs are around 12.5 mins in total. The show was 103 mins (although you could reduce that by chopping off the outro), so that leaves maybe 10 mins that would need to be cut from what’s left to fit it onto a single CD. I guess that’s what you would get by buying the Japanese version. The track listing gives some clues although they seem to have divided the recording into more tracks which makes comparison harder. It looks like the differences are the intro tape (2m30) and possibly a keyboard solo before Lost in Hollywood. Not sure that’s worth double the price! I’m hoping the rest of the world version will turn up on Spotify so I can see what sort of job’s been made before committing myself! I’m pretty gutted that after all this time it transpires that we can’t have the complete show after all. They seem to have done a nice job of cleaning up the video footage though.

    Scott W says:

I stand corrected. I just compared this footage with the Light in The black box set DVD of this show and there are no alt angles etc. This version shown here leaves out Ritchies opening show fireworks and a bit of soloing so the footage threw me as it was out of context. Sorry, I was wrong if anyone cares. Image does seem sharper though,,,could be computer screen as it is smaller than a TV screen…? Still may have to get this set regardless. There are boots of the rehearsals for this show where RB plays Weiss Heim BTW:

    Mac says:

The reason that the two tracks are not there is because they are still missing.

After an extensive search they still have not been found.

This unfortunately goes for the whole concert on video.

As for the quality it is as good as it can be.

It has been remastered, but unfortunately maybe it’s not up to everyone’s standards.

    So ..there you have it.

After 36 years this concert is getting released on stereo.

Why the wait? Simple it was only discovered last year after a lot of searching.

I sincerely hope that Rainbows fans everywhere go out and buy this and support this release.

Who knows…. it may help convince the record companies to support and fund more projects like this, and release more sought after concert recordings. Not just Rainbow.

Both Japanese editions of Donington 1980 are listed on Musicbrainz, along with timings of each track.
