It’s no big deal
Ian Gillan gave an interview to Chilean Radio Futuro that apparently went down the newswire and created a small stir worldwide. Despite the fact that he has not said there what he had not said before.
Whatever I say about that is gonna sound wrong. But who the hell wants to be in an institution? The Hall Of Fame thing, it’s an American thing. We don’t have that in England or Germany or Australia or Russia or anywhere in the world apart from America. And it’s an institution. What’s that got to do with rock and roll? Also, it’s run by these old guys who thought that The Monkees were America’s answer to The Beatles. And they called Deep Purple [Laughs]… I don’t think they quite understand what we are… They called us one-hit wonders. So I don’t know what they were talking about… whether it was ‘Hush’ or ‘Black Night’ or ‘Strange Kind Of Woman’, ‘Smoke On The Water’, ‘Child In Time’, ‘Knocking At Your Back Door’ or one of those one-hit wonders that we were… ‘Highway Star’… I just don’t know. And I guess the fans don’t really understand it except in America. It’s no big deal.
After being on the shortlist for the last two years only to be passed over come the actual induction, Deep Purple was skipped from the 2015 list alltogether.
Thanks to Blabbermouth for the info.
To give the benefit of the doubt, when they say one hit wonder at the U.S. Rock Hall they are talking specifically about Billboard Magazine Top 40 chart hits. That’s Hush, SOTW and maybe Kentucky Woman which ISTR was number 39 for about half an hour. Still, that makes them a 2-3 hit wonder. 🙂
October 21st, 2014 at 15:04I think he was up for it recently.
October 21st, 2014 at 15:05Did the hall gave DP the elbow?
I guess THIS is a big deal!!!!

October 21st, 2014 at 15:09The R&RHOF has ALWAYS been a joke. I hope they never get in as it has people who shouldn’t be in it as it is.
October 21st, 2014 at 16:51Well put Ian!!! Rock on Purple!!! We don’t need no stinking hall of fame. The music speaks for itself.
October 21st, 2014 at 17:54First of all, what the hell does a download to a copyrighted official release of Ian Gillan’s have to do with this article? I know you claim to be a music thief over simply not being able to afford to PAY for it, but it doesn’t mean honest consumers want to see it posted and/or join you in your activities of theft. I’m all ears, man. Talk about ridiculous, this seems to be the only air you can come up for? Admin, keeping this link here only contributes to the theft within it. Not to police anyone, but then again… have some integrity. And lose the spreaders of this disease. There might be something attached to the actual topic to discuss.
October 22nd, 2014 at 00:22The R&RHOF is definitely a joke. I live in the States. The writers at Rolling Stone Magazine still think we live in the hippie period of the 1960’s. It is so out of date nowadays. They forgot that they gave an award to DP in 1973 for being the biggest album sellers in the world. DP have sold approx. 150 million albums worldwide. Obviously the folks at Rolling Stone are too lazy to do any research.
October 22nd, 2014 at 00:31Rock &roll hall of shame
October 22nd, 2014 at 11:33I’ll never visit the R&R Hall of Shame nor watch any telecasts. And I pretty much live in striking distance of it.
An absolute joke not even having to take a smidgen of Purple into the equation….
Peace,

Yeah, I am from America and I have to agree with Ian Gillan. The Hall of Fame is no big thing. It is only a one time award and it is soon forgotten about by the stars who get inducted. The only people who care about it are those who go to visit the place. I have no intention of going there and I really don’t care who they induct at this point. Certainly there are bands that have been inducted that have nothing to do with Rock n’ Roll. DP doesn’t need to be inducted in a hall of fame with double standards. DP may have had many lineups over the years, but at least they stuck to rock n’ roll. Unlike the so-called Rock n’ Roll hall of fame.
October 22nd, 2014 at 14:34Man is right. Americans tend to institutionalize everything and that includes the most uninstitutionalizable thing there is: rock and roll. So, who gives a care if DP make it to the Hall of Fame or not…. What really matters is professionalism and dedication and these guys instill lots of that and more.
October 22nd, 2014 at 17:33Rock and Roll hall of SHAME.
October 22nd, 2014 at 20:10Thank God this year is no nominations “funny home”

Metallica .., practice just to practice, work hard still, this is not good
))))
Yes it is the HALL OF SHAME. At first I thought it would really be good, but after hearing who wasn’t in, and who WAS!!! What a joke! Deep Purple is one of the original hard rock and rollers. But I guess pop is what counts, not the real originals. And like he said, who wants to be in an institution?
October 24th, 2014 at 01:12We did have the UK Music Hall of Fame for a while but it had plenty American etc inductees too.
Also, to be fair, the only really major chart placings Purple had in America were Hush and Smoke.
October 25th, 2014 at 11:05When they talk about One Hit Wonders, they’re talking about whoring to corporations!
*F* corporations and *F* the RaRHF…let them keep their Michael Jackson’s and all the other “decent” people they’ve “inducted”.
October 25th, 2014 at 17:06Why is it you never hear Led Zep,Rolling Stones,Beatles,etc.. complain about the RNR Hall Of Fame? Most of the anti RNR Hall of Fame posts are ridiculous.Just because DP hasn’t made it.Sour grapes!!!
October 28th, 2014 at 13:54Chrissy @18, are you trying to wind us up???? The fact that Deep Purple has never been inducted, nor even nominated 20 years ago is the issue. Purple are far superior musicians and songwriters than most other bands who are in the RRHOF.
Not to diminish the accomplishments of the bands you have mentioned, but Purple has never been the beneficiary of the the gushing, fawning corporate hype those others have received. In fact Purple has been the victim of at best – total ignorance and neglect, to at worst, a calculated bias against it.
October 29th, 2014 at 11:50So Hush and Smoke were their only American hits(actually Kentucky Woman also made top 40), big deal!! They were an Album band. They were the biggest album sellers in the States in 1973. By the way, how many songs by LZ were “hits” in the States?
