Graz 1975

Graz 1975 cover; image courtesy of DP(o)

In contrast to some other labels, Edel appears to be doing something productive and is preparing for release a show from the Bundeseisstadion Liebenau in Graz, Austria, from April 3, 1975. This concert, together with Saarbrücken and Paris, was one of the shows that have proven to be the last for Mark 3 before the departure of Ritchie Blackmore and parts of it formed the backbone of the Made in Europe LP and more recent Mark III: The Final Concerts 2CD. The release is now scheduled for September 12 in Germany and 15th in the UK.

Track listing

  1. Burn
  2. Stormbringer
  3. The Gypsy
  4. Lady Double Dealer
  5. Mistreated
  6. Smoke On The Water
  7. You Fool No One
  8. Space Truckin’

Thanks to Chris Hewlett for the info.

Errata: this release is indeed does not contain a complete show as encores are still missing.

Cool. I’d be more excited if it were the Saarbrucken gig, though.

    Larry Toering says:

The label should know that most of the fans keep up, rather than digging up dead bones from the year of debauchery that disgraced the name.

  3. 3
    purpledaniel says:

It would be interesting to know if this is the complete setlist from the gig or it has been edited for this release. Does anybody know for sure? No encore tonight?

    purplepriest1965 says:

    Vinyl as well?
    Special editions?

I would be keen to hear this though Larry!

Get the bootleg, then support it if you like the show. 😀

The Gypsy ‘live’ I need to hear that, one of Purple greatest songs in my book! Great set list, although they could have dropped the ‘proverbial’ Smoke On The Water, still very interesting though! Cheers.

didn’t the play highway star that night as encore?

Those european shows were all great shows!

    MacGregor says:

Just listened to the ‘faster’ live version on Live in Paris 1975, excellent Blackmore melody as usual! Don’t know why I haven’t thought to look up a ‘live’ version of this song before. Cheers.

    MacGregor says:

Regarding the live performance of this ‘Live In Paris’ recording, Hughes needs to shut up big time, fuck if you were in a band with him carrying on like that, you would punch him really really hard! Annoying is an understatement & Coverdale at times is over the top also! No wonder Blackmore took off & a good thing indeed! Rainbow hooray! Cheers.

    Nicco says:

I don’t think this is new at all just a repackage ( and maybe remaster ) of a previous Sonic Zoom title.
    Cheers

@3…dear Purpledaniel…I can assure you as I attended the show as not even 14 year old lad…this is NOT the complete setlist…they played Highway Star as encore…I still got my ticket and the press announcement…and I still have original pics from that show…have a great weekend and keep on rocking…greetings from Graz

    Purple Sitner says:

    I forgot…second encore….last song but one….Going down….would have loved a different one than a cover…anyway…bliss memories…keep on rocking…

Thank God there’s no ‘Highway Star’, Mk III tended to murder Mk II material, can’t stand Coverdale turning the song into a joke and singing ‘Big fat knockers’. Plus, it seemed to be about Ritchie beating the crap out of his poor guitar and therefore ended up as more of a noise from the solo onwards. I love MK III but live it just wasn’t as good, the vocals were often pretty rough.

    Les Hedger says:

I have all the Sonic Zoom titles and this is not among them. I wish they were doing it!!

    @Purple Sitner,

wow thanks a lot forthe feedback. It would be cool if you could post here some more of your memories of that show for the fan´s pleasure.
However, I tend to suspect that there is indeed something wrong with the Graz master tapes regarding the encores. I have 3 suspects:
    1. It is quite strange that Edel would not release the full show. There seems to be no plausible explanation. Up until now, the EDEL archive releases have been released in full, AND with extra material. It is al least very strange that they cut the show to make it into one CD. POintless.
    2. If we look at the MK III Final Concerts release, no encores from Graz are there. Nothing conclusive, but it is another clue suggesting that maybe the master tapes for the Graz encores are damaged or have not survived.
    3. Here is a shot of the production sheet from recordings with the Stones Mobile in Graz 1975, with Martin Birch engineering:

    http://www.glennhughes.com/fanforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=5154&d=1362574228

Again, not conclusive, but it is a second “strange” fact that the encores are not shown after Space Trukin.

It would be interesting that EDEL would explain what has been done for this release and the fate of the Graz encores.

    @ 12 Steve,
Graz had only been in bits and edited pieces on “MK III The Final Concerts”. It was never released in full on the Sonic Zoom run, so this is going to be in large part new. I don’t even recall the gig being botlegged.

I’m very glad that we will have another version of the mighty “Gypsy” in great quality, and other tunes are also no slouch compared to Paris too.

Nevertheless, to my ears it sounds like Saarbrucken was the best of the last three MK III gigs anyway (MIE has quite large chunks of it used), so I do hope that it will be on the series, released in full – before the countdown hits 10 albums and the release is full.

this 1975 show is not new, I already bought the MK III Final CONCERTS ………

the DPAS overseas should release the LIVERPOOL 1976 last gig….in the remastered high definition quality. Not the same show over and over !!

  21. 21
    purpledaniel says:

@19, that is not the compleete setlist, the encores are missing.

    @20,

Well at least there are some unreleased tracks from this show, so let´s hope that tis represents a sound improvement as well. The MK III final concerts has bad audio. I was not impressed with the Paris tracks on that release but a new, good mix DOES the difference if you listen to the original Live in Paris by Zonic Zoom.
DP overseas hinted that the Saarbrucken show is going to be released as well.
The Liverpool 76 gig was suposed to be the first of the ZZ releases, but it was canceled when they found out that there was a better source, though the guy asked for too much money for his tape.

    purplepriest1965 says:

Larry, I dont know if that was for me……………….but ….

I always buy new releases from the old days.
    MK 3 is no exception.
I bought everything,Including the vinyl., untill ROTD arrived.Including the vinyl.
    Still have not got it.
    Same goes for NOW What?

I rarely download boots of official albums, but thats also because I am spoiled and almost never like a new album any more.

But, thank God I m able to download first instead of feeling the pressure and forcing eyes of a shopassistant 🙂 to buy stuff while listening… nowadays

  23. 23
    purplepriest1965 says:

I find the MK 4 live boots hardly listenable.
Downloaded them some time ago, never listen to them.

Are 2 official shows(Japan and California) not enough?

The S & M line line up still has got no official live album.
    Same for the Stariani outfit.

If MK 4 should have another live release, is Miami not a better choice?
    Or something from Australia?

  24. 24
    ltia says:

    @23:
Not sure we’ll see an official release from S&M because JLT wasn’t at his best to say the least. My understanding was that Satriani blocked a release of anything from mk VI as he didn’t feel it was special enough (code for ‘Steve did it better’ :-)) Maybe they should ask him again? I hope they do.

    @21:
My understanding was that the Liverpool 76 show was an audience recording? If so, I can’t see them releasing it without the original mail order Sonic Zoom format.

The drum solo in ‘You fool no one’ ist cut!!! Why? – ‘in ist entirety’ – haha

  26. 26
    Kazz says:

Just heard it. It’s terrible. They edited things down to make it fit on 1 CD (just a perfect 79min 55sec). And indeed, the encores are missing.
I pass and wait for the reissue, which will certainly come (that’s company’s politics) and will include all full versions and encores.

  27. 27
    MacGregor says:

Itia @24- ‘Satriani blocked a release of anything from MKVI’ ?????????????? Where did you get that from??????????? Cheers.

    nutking says:

Listened to it twice now, a fantastic document! But not complete indeed, we still have at least a missing drumsolo and the blues bit from the guitar solo in You fool no one. (this is unforgivable, of course) the singing on You fool no one isn’t to good either, I prefer Made in Europe and La dernière séance for this song. Aside from that, everything uptil Smoke on the water is a stunning performance with three unreleased versions of songs. (The Gypsy, Lady Double Dealer and Smoke on the Water. Interesting to listen to MKIII after MKVIII :^D

    metaljim says:

    Wow, what a disappointment.
The good news? The sound is great.
The bad news? Hughes and Coverdale open their mouths…..
Gypsy is sort of subpar, miles below the spectacular Paris version.
Lady Double Dealer’s guitar solo is MONSTEROUS!!!!
Space Truckin’ begins with Hughes clearing his throat for over five minutes. Boring AND annoying…
You Fool No One? No drum solo and no Ritchie’s Blues. both have been cut.
Coverdale just bellows all through the show, except when he lets Glenn overshadow home the rest of the time.
    Buy at your own risk….

    Scott W. says:

I just listened to 2/3rds of it and while a bit bass heavy, it sounds great! I remember when first hearing ‘Made In Europe’ all those years ago and falling in love with the band! Ritchie’s tone is so biting during this period! I think guitar sound/tone wise, that RB never bettered this sound (ok, a year or 2 later we had the wonderful sounding ‘Rising’ LP/tour) so between ’75 and ’76 RB’s sound is my preference with the 80’s reunion sound being the worst! Ritchie has used slide playing off and on over his long career but what struck me listening to Graz is how much more often he used it during MK III. The closing solo on Stormbringer and of course the bulk of the solo on Gypsy here illustrate my point. Ian Paice’s ‘drumming peak’ was during this period to me, (and after, with Bolin in MKIV and in PAL), Great sound, and his fills are busier than his playing before or after this period of his career! Why ‘You Fool’ is cut is disappointing. (We can always use the version on ‘The Final Concerts’ cd and make our own show i guess ?!) Maybe the record company trying to force the show on one disc i guess. If the Encores exist, then a double would have been justified. I think possibly the Stones Mobile recording equipment was turned off inadvertantly after the main part of the show, or, they deemed them not worthy due to a tape fault, or maybe Ritchie was throwing his guitar about just making noise…? I am just speculating here… only DP Overseas knows. Or, we might have to buy the ‘Complete Show’ version in 5 years….!

    George Fotsis says:

I haven’t seen it in the shops yet? What’s the reason for the whole show not being released? Did they only want a single cd of it ! Would rather a whole show , even if it mean’s boring or not so interesting bits in the show. Have heard some of the songs on the final concerts cd, but the sound comes right at you from the speakers. Would prefer it was more in the background. A whole box set of the final 3 shows should have been released years ago. They were in great form here. Ritchie is playing very well, fast emotional solos , top riffs, Glenns bass is strong & David was a top singer . This line up played some top sounding blues music. They should have tried to sort out there problems.
