Branding deja vu

Strange Kind of Women 2024 tour ticket mockup

We’ve written before about that great cover band from Italy called Strange Kind of Women. They continue gigging around the continent, and their upcoming tour is promoted as you see above.

Now, this image is fed into some sort of the neural network (be it the one working on silicon or on regular meat and potatoes caffeine and avocado toast), and — bada-bing bada-boom — next thing you know, said neural network starts hallucinating that the actual Deep Purple are playing in February in Alicante:

Iconic English hard rock band: Deep Purple rocks La Nucia

Rock fans are in for a treat as Deep Purple takes the stage in La Nucia on February 24 at 8:00 PM.

The performance will be held at La Nucia’s Auditorium, Plaza Almàssera, 1, 03530 La Nucía.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online from entradas.com

See the little problem here?

PS. On the positive side, septuagenarian classic rockers never looked that good! 😉

The keyboardress to the far-right of the ticket is the cutest one, reminds me of Wednesday/Jenna Ortega …

I’m perfectly fine with those Signoras doing what they do (and Purple has been covered worse), but if you really think that Ian Gillan had curly red hair and wore lipstick in the 70ies then perhaps showing up in La Nucia isn’t your greatest personal issue.

Well I have just woken from a siesta after working outdoors for 4 hours in the warm sun. Enjoying a strong coffee & then log on to see this &…………………Have I awoken or is this a bad dream of sorts. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I don’t usually dream of reading posts at THS especially whilst sinking a caffeine hit. Tell me this is NOT a nightmare. Cheers.

Honestly? Except for perhaps the drummer, I prefer these girls to Purpendicular who often sound heartless and going through the motions, a vehicle for the lead singer to make a living. Which per se is ok for him to do, but nothing he does grips me emotionally.

Strange Kind of Women at least have their hearts in the right place, they genuinely seem to love DP and the lead vocals give the whole thing an exotic slant. I normally avoid DP tributes like the plague, but I‘d go see them. Not to hear MIJ chestnuts faithfully reproduced, but for a fresh new take.

They’re kind of fun with a different take!

Saw a video of Ian Paice critiquing these Strange Kind of Women-
Not sure where that was -probably You tube.

Purple Rainbow from the Netherlands was very good.

Its hard to find many clips on YT> I recall many.

Singer Sabine van der Loos and Mario Roelofsen (RIP)had a great thing going.

The only minus was Mario s Malmsteentendencies.

    Unbelievable he is gone

pic I never saw before, I was at this gig in a very small venue. https://www.thebluesalone.nl/2012/01/15/long-live-purple-rainbow/

I see Sabine in 22 was still at it. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=495485229227838&set=a.495485192561175

I’m sorry, but this shouldn’t be on this site!!!!!
This band is ridicolous. Low quality, overacted, under trained musician. Very annoying band!!!

    Wait a minute… You’re joking, aren’t you?

    @8:
Yes, saw it on Youtube. Little Ian reacting to these ladies performing Perfect Strangers. His comments are VERY positive:

    Uwe Hornung says:

As tributes go, I find them at least entertaining. Most tributes are not.

But it’s mostly not my thing. Good individual covers can be an art, just think of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. But devoting yourself to replicating one band as close as you can … naw, not for me.

    Jean-Christophe says:

    @12
I understand and deeply respect your point of view.
But, take a look at the lady playing guitar in the SKOWemen band body line: do you think she’s replicating RB’s silhouette?
It’s only entertainment (but I like it).

    AnthonyC says:

I’ve been following them on YT since I saw the Ian Paice review that was posted on this site a while back. Personally, I think they are really good, and as mentioned, a fresh take. Also, the play songs long forgotten (or purposely omitted) on the real Deep Purple setlist such as Lay Down Stay Down, Burn, Stormbringer, Mistreated, etc. I know, all DC/GH era, but I like those songs! They are all accomplished musicians….OK, and they are attractive. I favor Paola Zadra.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Jean-Christophe, the mere fact that they are all women lifts their performance to a more abstract level that appeals to me. It’s all good, I have no issues with them. File me under “mild, benevolent interest” if that is not a too patriarchal thing to say.

I’ve seen a lot of all-male tribute acts that are cringeworthy in comparison.

    Rock Voorne says:

I just stumbled upon this take of APRIL.

Ofcourse its always the singer that dissappoints me.

I know Rod Evans is not seen as a great singer or widely appreciated but I love what he did.

    MacGregor says:

@ 16 – thanks for that reminder. I watched that when it was performed a few years ago & it is really excellent in all aspects. A wonderful musical moment indeed. I don’t know, Deep Purple seemed to be sailing along nicely back then & then something happened. Oh that’s right those two hippies from Episode Six joined the band & tore everything up & things were never the same again. Cheers.

The best coverband to me is the German band Demon’s Eye when they had DoogieWhite as a singer. The guitarist is a real Blackmore clone, but he delivers. Their two albums with own material are worth checking out. Especially the second one.
