Made in Japan documentary teaser

The original management company Deep Purple (Overseas) has posted a teaser for the Made in Japan documentary that is being prepared for release some time early next year:

The documentary component highlights the Mark 2 period of the band with a focus on the recording of ‘Machine Head’, the friction that developed within the band, the recording of the famous Japanese 1972 concerts, and for the first time we will see the complete 1972 film recording.

The documentary will cover the period in band’s history starting from recording of Machine Head to Mark 2 implosion in June 1973. Most of the 26 minutes of live footage from Tokyo August 1972 is used, with both historical and new interviews overlaid in places of the show that were not filmed.

The documentary will be released in conjunction with the remix of the three Japanese shows.

Thanks to DP(o) for the info.

I think the audio is the most important, and we all know it. Everything else is make money and smoke.

    Maybe true? Hmmm …

    Jeff Summers says:

Of course it is to make money Thomas, that’s what popular and in demand products do. The film is totally historic and of great importance though certainly for me as I was a little too young to catch any MkII shows and was totally blown away as a kid when I heard MIJ. I wish people would stop going on about making money on this historic stuff. If it was just a re-issue of the original audio source I can understand your point. The bottom line is, if you don’t want it, don’t buy it. You can always wait until someone uploads it on YT for free can’t you??

The complete1972 film and 26 minutes from the legendary Made in Japan Concerts, well boys and Girls, thats good enough for me!

I’m buying it for the DVD documentary alone, the CDs will make a nice bonus though. If they screw up the sound then at least I have the original vinyl and EMI CD and all the other CD versions that have come out over the years.
Just hope the price is reasonable and hope it’s not packed in crummy sleeves like the Machine Head 40th box set.

I don’t know how I will manage the patience to wait for this.

Historic indeed. If the money flows I hope the DP boys get the pudding.

    Dirk Gentz says:

Oh no! Not another remix without Martin Birch. The mix he did with Paice and Glover is what I hear in my head. The remastering was okay except for the slip over over of the audience applause. The 3 CD set sounded definitely wrong to me.
Nevertheless the film could be worthwhile.

Well said Jeff Summers. As if making money is a bad thing! It’s what makes the world go round. Besides, this documentary will feature some great stuff, and the entire package with replica Jap tour programmes etc will be a joy to behold. 🙂
