Made in Japan remix
The old management company has announced that Universal is preparing a (belated) 40th anniversary edition of Made in Japan. Kevin Shirley is finishing remix of the album and actually all 3 Japanese dates are being remixed. Universal ended up owning the band’s back catalogue after in 2011 it bought up what was left of EMI’s recording business.

September 28th, 2013 at 21:07Corey @ 1- nothing is perfect in this world. Made In Japan as you know, is a collection of songs from 3 different nights. Many ‘live’ albums are a collection of the ‘best’ performances from selected concerts. Then there is the one night only ‘live’ concert, which is really the correct ‘live’ performance. We then get to hear it how it was on the night, everything that happens. However, so many concerts are touched up afterwards in the studio, to ‘replace’ mistakes or the sound mix or the proverbial ‘train wreck’ as it is known!

Made In Japan has a pretty clean record for ‘non tampering’ from what we can perceive! In many ways it would be interesting to hear the ‘other’ songs from different nights. No artist performs the same concert each night, it happens, they are human beings! Cheers.

I have a duble lp from the late seventies, and the first print on cd.
You can hear the echoes in the hall, the fuzz from the Marshalls when the guys are not playing…every single sound and noise, thanks to the really simple and pure recording made by Martin Birch ( if I remember well, he used a mere 8 track recorder!!!)
And now what?
Sure as hell we’ll get some over compressed music, just loud’n’FLAT, as Now What?! is.
That’s good news, i am thinking along the same lines as Thorsten, will that be the same as the 3cd box set that EMI released in 1993 “Live In Japan”, i guess time will tell.

I have the original LP version from 1972, the Anniversary version AND Live In Japan (3CD) which is, I must
say, very enjoyable indeed.
Who cares if there´s some possible “missing parts” ? Come on! It IS a DOCUMENTARY of the Band at it´s ultimate peak. Cheers to all !
September 29th, 2013 at 13:02I’m all for a remix of both the original and 3 CD versions. The original Made In Japan has a superb mix but I’ve listened to it a million times so anything that brings something new to the experience is welcome.
The 3 CD Live In Japan I rarely listen to because of the poorly balanced mix. The drums are great but that’s about it. Bring on the remix (and bring up the guitar!).

I agree with what everyone is saying here – the original mix is awesome, but the mix from the 3 night release isn’t. So getting a better mix of nights 1 and 3 is definitely worthwhile as well as (hopefully) having complete shows for the first time in one place.
I’ve always preferred the 3rd night to the 2nd. The only exception for me being the call and response section of Strange Kind of Woman, which is better on the 2nd. Controversial?
September 30th, 2013 at 12:20If it is now in 5.1 it will be incredible. It is my favorite Purple performance and it is pretty much perfect as is…especially the incredible analog warmth to it. BUT, I always felt as though the vocals were about 5-10% too low in the mix. Hopefully Shirley agrees. Why are people so nostalgic about the possibilities of a remix? We already have the great mix so what harm is there in hearing it in a new way? If you don’t want it don’t buy it. There’s no need to discourage record companies from offering things such as this, especially when people outside of the record companies are doing the work. For every botched re-mix/remastering effort there are 5 killer upgrades. To the person above who states that Shirely ruined “Come Taste” are you kidding me? Shirely did not produce BCC very well but he did a great job on Come Taste The Band! Side note:… if Martin Birch wanted to do these things he would make himself available, so apparently that is not the case. Looking forward to this! *Wish Steven Wilson had done it though.

Yes it is true that the Live in Japan 3CD set had a poor mix-and that makes perfectlky sense for a new mix. I´m no audiophil, but I have enjoyed the previous works of Kevin Shirley a lot: the Led Zeppelin DVD, BCC and the CTTB remixes were all great to me. Let´s just wait until this stuff gets released and then we can complain freely.

And always tell to the my students: it is not technology, it is not luxury, the idea is what it’s count (just look this tiny space where best rock album was made !!)

Jeff i am with you, with some classic albums that have now “got” the dvd/bluray 5.1 mix, can you imagine if Steve Wilson took over the “helm”.
For some time now I ve been reading statements along the lines that the 1993 version was poorly mixed.
Maybe it is my mental health going down because I m getting old or that I ve missed out on something but…..
I always felt/heard/perceived that version to be a vast improvement on the classic mix.
I was certainly not the only one that had that opinion.
Read Simon Robinson’s words in the booklet, for example.
What happened inbetween that shifted the views on this?!

October 2nd, 2013 at 01:47Made In Japan is Indeed a 100% Live album. Yes the songs are from different nights and not all from one show. But the songs that were choosen are Live. I have the audience recordings all 3 shows and they match perfectly to the album versions.
October 3rd, 2013 at 21:1520 minutes plus extra footage of that mercury live ALBUM – MADE IN JAPAN – pure POWER & AWESOMENESS of a band duirng their PRIME YEARS back in 1972. Will definitely wait for it to be released and added on the others great music titles by Deep Purple in Vietnam – Eeeeaaaooouuwww!

Shirley’s approach is the audio equivalent of using a meat cleaver to perform a vasectomy.
He over-compresses each instrument individually, then further destroys the mix by brick wall limiting the master bus until there’s no dynamic range left.
Shirley DESTROYED Led Zeppelin: DVD and How The West Was Won.
He MANGLED Black Country Communion.
He DESECRATED Come Taste The Band.
Everything he touches turns to a cacophony of muddy crapulence.
DO NOT let this man near Made In Japan!
DO NOT LET HIM NEAR A MIXING DESK, PERIOD.
If this means we will finally get a box set of all three shows complete that made up the “Made in Japan” album I am all for it! I still enjoy the 1993 3CD set poor mix and all and always wished they would put out all three shows complete.
I just got the new Humble Pie complete Fillmore concerts and it is brilliant so hopefully The 1972 DP Japan shows will get a similar treatment.
October 31st, 2013 at 15:13Well I personally have no complaints about the mix on the Live in Japan set. The problem I have is the 3 CD restriction. Remixing the tapes again will at least give the opportunity for a 6 CD release with all three shows complete and in the correct order.
That being said, with the bonus disc in the remastered MiJ all the songs ARE available. Anyone who knows how to make a playlist can assemble the shows in their correct order, and anyone with a little skill with digital editing can make that playlist seamless (I myself have done this. It is available on Pirate Bay as Made in Japan: The Complete Concerts).
So why remix it again? A couple of people said it above. 5.1. THAT is a fantastic reason to do it all by itself. Add to that the recent trend to offer high resolution audio on a bluray disc and I think it’s a worthy idea. And the dynamic range of the high res will keep Shitley (you read that right) from having to brickwall the thing.
