Roger missed Bonn
Updated with message from RG. Deep Purple were headlining the Classic Rocknacht in Bonn, Germany this Sunday, July 14, and found themselves without a bass player. Roger Glover had to sit this one out due to shoulder pain (express.de report in German). Nick Fyffe was hastily recruited to do the duties. Nick has already deputized on bass when Roger had to miss a few shows couple of years back for family reasons, so he already knew the classics. But Now what?! material was a new territory for him. According to the promoter, the band rehearsed with the new bass player tirelessly throughout Friday to nail down the set.
Gov’t Mule were also on the bill in Bonn and Warren Hayes came on stage to jam with the boys. Here’s a video (with piss poor sound, unfortunately):
As for Roger, don’t worry — we have reports that he was back on stage the next day in Zürich.

I have apologized to my band mates and I apologize to all that were at the Bonn concert, I am sorry I wasn’t there. I’m deeply indebted to Nick Fyffe for taking over at incredibly short notice.
I have a shoulder injury. Unfortunately, an attempt to relieve the discomfort unexpectedly had the opposite effect for a few days and I couldn’t use my arm. Fortunately, I eventually found relief and played the Zürich concert the following night – and I will finish the tour.

July 16th, 2013 at 22:24Not too thrilled about the setlist… Was hoping for a more drastic change after all the ?NW! hoopla. I hope the ‘NW Tour’ doesn’t diminish into the ‘SOS Tour’. Surely they will re-adjust this as they progress along. They should do no less than half the album and throw in a couple from each of the other MK7-8 albums. That would leave 5 slots open for the ‘old standards’. ?URFECT!
Glad Rog is back. Cool that Warren Hayes got up also. Hope there is some better quality vids to follow.

July 17th, 2013 at 01:36@4 they dont call it the Now What tour dude. That starts in October!!!! This was a Festival with lots of other Bands. So they play a shorter set for starters and then use a setlist that is more for a wider audience. Because a lot of people will not have come specifically for Purple. I am impressed they did 3 Songs from the Album.

July 17th, 2013 at 18:56I´ve missed the first band Triggerfinger. 2. band was Crppled Black Phoenix.They did a very good 1hour show. The highlight of the was Gov´t Mule.A fantastic 2hour show. As the headlining band DP should be able to as long as a supporting band, but they only played 1.38h.

July 17th, 2013 at 20:05Gov’t Mule has been a favorite band of mine since they first started out in 1994. I believe that if Deep purple really want to get back to their glory in the USA market, they should to book some of the big festivals here like Bonnaroo, Gathering of the Vibes, Coachella, Austin City Limits, Summer fest in Milwaukee and any others jus to be in the circuit . There’s a whole generation of young concert goers who are starving for Deep Purple. There’s also Mountain Jam and Wanee. Pass the word on for 2014 Roger!

July 17th, 2013 at 22:02As people get older they at some point slow down. With the passing of John Lord and Roger Glovers injury it might be a good thing to slow down. As much as I love Deep Purple the band members health is more important. The good thing is they have left the fans a lot fo music for everyone to listen to. Thank GOD for that. jr miller

Nick I’d have to disagree with that. Bands and acts have promoters that hustle their brand to all walks of exposure and festivals are one of the best adverts there is due to the widespread advertisement. There is heavy politicking, especially to be the “Headliner”…. Yes there are some sought after acts obviously due to draw stats, but there are many promoters knocking on the festival management door hoping to get their band in.

You don’t sit and wait for things to happen–you *make* them happen. Opportunity doesn’t knock–you have to go door-to-door on your own.
There should be a push for American TV coverage–Leno, SNL, “That Metal Show,” etc. The latter would be easiest and pay dividends.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Eddie Trunk & Company would fly out to Purple for a segment.

As for the festivals…..they would shock and surprise those festival crowds in a good way. They would do well to compromise on the band’s standard take for the shows to promote the band at some of these festivals. Might be well worth the trade-off.

July 29th, 2013 at 10:15Yes, Trunk & Co would love to sit with Purple and chew the fat. Unfortunately, Purple and Co don’t quite get the point of it all. Living in the shadow of MTV days gone by that were avoided by the management seems to be ‘deja vue all over again’….. Dump Those Bumms!!!! HIRE ME!!!! Hell, I’d do it for friggin’ free.
