The actual sales numbers are a bit difficult to come by. One source provides weekly global sales with numbers appearing to be not cumulative, therefore missing data for the critical first few days after the release:
Total confirmed sales: 106,000.
Assuming exponential decay in sales, first week (April 26 to May 2) numbers can be estimated at 85 to 90 thousand, with 160-170 thousand cumulative for the first three weeks.
Another source gives slightly different numbers:
- April 28: #40, 19,100
- May 5: #8, 76,200
- May 12: #20, 37,300
- May 19: #34, 27,400
- May 26: #46, 20,000
Total confirmed sales: 180,000.
If you have any confirmed chart positions, please post in the comments, preferably with a prooflink.
Thanks to Ke79, Daniel Bengtsson, Andrey Gusenkov, Bjørn Sund, Mike Eriksson, Ron, laski, Nigel Young, ron, joroz, Giuseppe, Akis, alessandro, Joerg, Apollo, micke, and many, many others for the info.

May 6th, 2013 at 19:39This week’s new entries in the German Album charts will be published tomorrow. “Now What?!” will be at Number 1. This has already been confirmed by earMusic/edel via their Facebook page.

And they will be No. 1 in the German charts published this Friday according to the record company:

@1 & @2:
May 6th, 2013 at 20:44(in the interests of good journalism) a claim by the record company is not an independent confirmation. 😉 we’ll wait until tomorrow.
Wow, great stuff. This album deserves to be a best-seller.
May 6th, 2013 at 23:25That makes sense:
A sensational good record results in a very good chart number

May 7th, 2013 at 09:04In america No#500, Justin beiber #1, “strange ways”.
May 7th, 2013 at 10:29@9 sad but true. Any boy with a goofy hairdo…girl’s voice….Jackson 5 dance moves….and electronic drum can become a musical star here in the USA. The media brainwash listeners into what is hip and what is not. The new DP jams will be a blip on the radar…..yep..pretty sad indeed.
May 7th, 2013 at 13:46As I understand it, NW went # 1 in Czech Republic too. Way to go!
May 7th, 2013 at 16:36In america No#500? that’s why they hardly will tour Usa and they are not in the R’N’R’HOF…
anyway Now What is numer 1 even on the Czech Republic chart…
May 7th, 2013 at 18:45The German Wikipedia entry lists only five other #1 positions for Deep Purple: In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Burn, and, surprisingly, The House Of Blue Light. Probably a different chart or calculation method. I see that Bananas also did pretty well in Germany.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Purple
May 7th, 2013 at 20:02@Reinder: “Made in Japan” was also at #1 in Germany. This does not appear in the Wikipedia list, because this only focuses on the studio albums. But it is mentioned there in the live albums list.
May 8th, 2013 at 10:00HOBL is not for everyone the biggest Deep purple fuck up.
May 8th, 2013 at 11:21@ 13 I know for sure MIJ went to #1 in Germany, maybe not counted because it’s a livealbum..?
May 8th, 2013 at 15:18You forgot ” Made in Japan”, who was also No. 1 in Germany ( you have to look under “Livealben”), so with “Now what” we totally got
May 8th, 2013 at 17:12seven No. 1 albums for Deep Purple in Germany right now. Unfortunately, “Perfect Strangers” “only” went No. 2 in 1984 due to strong
competitors namely in person of Sade (“Diamond Life”) and Herbert Grönemeyer (“4630 Bochum”, an album who sold over 2,5 million
copies at the end in Germany which means No. 3 top-selling album of all time).
Reinder – ignore w*k*p*d*a – the previous six German chart-topping albums were In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Made In Japan, Burn and The House Of Blue Light.
May 8th, 2013 at 20:03Roberto: the record isn’t out for another week in the US.
Nigel: as others have commented, MIJ was listed in another section, so no need to cast aspersions on Wikipedia for that omission.
May 8th, 2013 at 20:58In the United States, there’s no mention of the album yet. Corporate radio/classic rock. Hopefully, it’ll get more attention this summer. As an American, I’m embarrassed by the so-called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s a beautiful building, but all corporate-controlled. The fans, in America and worldwide, voted for Rush and Deep Purple to be in the Hall. Geddy Lee of Rush says it’s ridiculous Purple didn’t make it. Doesn’t matter, though. Everyone over 40 here knows/loves Purple. Everyone younger than 40 never heard of them.
May 8th, 2013 at 21:05Wikepedia’s Now What page shows it opened at 115 in the USA. If true this is the biggest selling album since Slave and Masters in the USA which opened lower than 115 but peaked around 90. However, I can’t confirm this. If all these charts are true, this is the biggest Purple Album world wide since HOBL.
May 8th, 2013 at 23:2519@ that’s based on the pre-ordering (around 4000 copies) and it gives an impression of how many copies it will sell…
May 9th, 2013 at 11:55https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlY8AjWo27g
Nice clip.
I just thought : why does he not hear stuff from it?
Would that be deleted by the DP company?
I cant find any tracks of the album on YT. Remarkable.
Does that result from intense labour by someone who is appointed just for that?
Is it possible for artists nowadays to reach an agreement with YT to act legally within certain boundaries?
I d understand such an action if it was for some weeks or months just to push sales.
Then again, YT is PROMOTION as well and dl’ing means you dont have the original with the artwork and the lossless quality, so……
It would be interesting to know what it effects in quantities / salesnumbers resulting from actions like these.
How many people go on buy a relatively expensive product instead of downloading or waiting because there is nota complete album on YT?
Like with earlier albums I burn my copy on a rewritable and wait for a cheaper offering, maybe 2nd hand later on.
If that means I miss out on certain special limited editions, ok.
Waiting also means I weed out the ridicilous duplications due to more than 1 edition.
Uptill now , in the end that is, I bought about everything but just waited since Abandon.
Sometimes I postpone even when I find, for instance, a touredition of ROTD(I still only have the vinyl edition, unplayed)for just 10 euro.
Choices.
I ll try to grab both the most interesting editions of ROTD and NOW WHAT when the time comes.
By now I should be able to make a nice sampler of the Airey/Morse era.
I dont know what a regular copy of a DeLuxe edition costs.
I seldomly hear a new album in recent years I really want to own.
Should I really mention that I would act differently alltogether if I could buy a new MK 2 album? : )
May 9th, 2013 at 12:32It is confirmed! The new issue of Billboard ( 18 May 13) has Deep Purple’s new album at 115 on the US charts and #1 on the German Billboard Chart as well. WoW!

Really great album and the charts shows exactly that.
May 9th, 2013 at 14:53n. 12 in Italy
May 9th, 2013 at 14:58Hi the album is also n. 12 in Italy.
May 9th, 2013 at 15:06http://www.fimi.it/classifiche_album.php
Can’t wait for my copy from the U.K. and the best part too, there are so many positive reviews all over the net, although i haven’t seen a copy yet in Australia, but as i write that will change, so i have had a listen to all 12 ‘samples” and from what fans have been suggesting there is a little “Perfect Strangers” a slice of “Perpendicular” i will absolutely go “Bananas” once i receive the album!! Any chart action is always success no matter how many copies it sells! Well done guys!!

It is absent from the latest official UK midweek chart Top 40 (it was 11 last midweek, so 19 for the full week showed that its sales were already declining http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/rudimental-look-set-to-find-a-home-at-the-top-of-the-official-albums-chart-2194/)
May 10th, 2013 at 09:46I know times have changed but by my reckoning the Number 19 position in UK is the highest chart placing in this country since ‘The House of Blue light’, when you consider that DP get very little mainstream media coverage it’s no mean feat.
May 10th, 2013 at 10:16Hi everyone the album is also number 20 in Greece so far!

May 10th, 2013 at 16:25I am shocked in a good way. Now What?! on 1st place (week 19) in Norway!!! Can’t almost believe its true?! Its time for Norwegian radio channels to play some songs from this album, now that it is on 1st place! I hope the radio channels take notice of Deep Purple’s position on this chart, as it is the official top 40 album chart.
May 10th, 2013 at 16:5636th in its first week in the French side of the Belgian charts (33 was in Flanders, sorry, we’re complicated !), it’s now 14th.

Still waiting in Australia,it doesn’t take that long to send some cds down here, its killing me hearing how good it sounds,oh well back to you tube.
May 11th, 2013 at 05:04-yes, “its good to be king…” finally, some well-deserved recognition of a band that prove it has gone “Above and Beyond” the shadow of Blackmore and Jon. it is heartening to hear the heart and soul on Jon on may tracks, and as a Purple fan, I am glad to hear an album with much dept and creativity. Shine on uncommon men.
May 11th, 2013 at 08:34It have moved up secon week in Denmark too, from # 26 to # 18.
May 11th, 2013 at 10:08Sorry, no. 11 globally!

http://acharts.us/world_albums_top_40
May 11th, 2013 at 12:13Can someone tell us how many actual copies have been sold world wide? Saying it’s # 1 here and # 2 there really does not tell us much. # 1 in one country may only mean 500 copies where as # 18 in another country might mean 30,000 copies. I know it might be difficult to come up with a number but it’s something I would like to know.
May 11th, 2013 at 13:35I can’t see the album staying in the charts unless it gets radio and tv exposure. Are any of the new songs on the radio?
May 11th, 2013 at 18:45All the time in the world, filmed in Ischgl, Austria.

May 12th, 2013 at 09:17Shaun @39 it’s finally out now in Australia, it took awhile, the original release date was 28-29th April we had to wait 2 weeks, it’s worth it though
May 12th, 2013 at 09:31@47, I haven’t got mine yet. So I repeat the words of Shaun @39 “it doesn’t take that long to send some cds down here’.
May 12th, 2013 at 10:53If bands / labels don’t want their stuff downloaded illegaly, then make it available, please!!!!
Hungary # 7.
May 12th, 2013 at 12:14@44 “51.000” according to http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htm
May 12th, 2013 at 17:20I’d also be interested in the raw numbers. Nice as those chart numbers are, I am hoping for the band to recoup so they’ll make another record in a year or two instead of making us wait forever…
May 12th, 2013 at 17:54NW?! in the UK charts:
Top 100 Albums: from 19 to 69
Rock & Metal Albums: from 1 to 4
Record Store Albums: from 5 to 17
Scottish Albums: from 13 to nowhere!
Spain: from 19 to 30

38 in Afganistan
May 12th, 2013 at 19:2617 in Namibia
8 in Antigua y Barbuda
31 in Anguila
4 in Azerbaiyan
In Finland last week #8, in this week #13, BUT last week it was the highest ranking non-Finnish album, and this week the second highest. In a some reason, nowadays Finnish music totally dominates in the offical list.
May 12th, 2013 at 19:55From two days the album climbing Amazon US charts (amazon.com). It was way outside top 100 few days ago, but from Saturday is in top 70 and at the moment is on number 62.
I hope that will put Now What in at least top 100 or higher in the billboard 200 this week.
May 13th, 2013 at 11:11greece 21 second week 😉

May 13th, 2013 at 21:46German people were always with perfect taste for good music, since before Beethoven and from then onwards. 🙂
May 14th, 2013 at 09:00Ludwig van Beethoven came from Limburg, a part in the north of Belgium.
May 14th, 2013 at 10:04Which boundaries are next to …..Limburg….in The Netherlands that is.
Appearantly I ve been misinformed way back.
No info on Limburg in here.
But he remains half Belgian/half German.

May 14th, 2013 at 10:08HZ: You don’t get any German TV or radio, do you?
It would seem from the numbers, that the USA is still the second or third market for DP, despite the pityful chart showing in the US charts. My guesstimate would be Germany 25,000; UK 5-10,000 USA 5000 and then all the other markets. But if anyone has, like, actual data, I’d be interested in seeing it.
May 14th, 2013 at 10:22Here in the USA the media continually cram the latest “Fad” in music at everyone no matter how untalented or crappy it is. Purple havn’t got a chance here.
May 14th, 2013 at 12:12I have an order on Amazon placed a month ago. But when I phoned a local record store they advised they had it in. Hurried to the store and from the first note until the very last was blown away. Many albums take time to grow on the listener. I knew straight away that this was to be an exception. Smile ear to ear and played again after the end. And i am playing it again. And again. And again. Headphones last night to capture every last nuance. Many comments here sum up a large majority of thumbs up. Ezrin is a freak. Don Airey’s playing is off of the charts. Great testament to Sir Jon. Steve usual tasteful playing, with Ezrin keeping him on a leash, not too short but perfect for the song structures and overall cohesiveness of the record. I find Gillan’s voice to be superb and the rhythm kings Ian and Roger the usual superlative duo.
Each and every album stands on its own. From Shades through to Now What ?! and the host of those who were in Purple past and present, It’s all good. The Purple vibe continues.
I pray this is not the final chapter….
Peace,
May 14th, 2013 at 13:58Ted

As I can see its out of Billboard 200 in the second week, which is a real shame for such an exellent album. But probably in US the music audience is completely different from the rest of the world.

And one more thing – in Greece in second week Now What was 21st no 20th.
May 17th, 2013 at 12:24It fell out of the US Billboard charts after entering at a respectable 115 for the band, I would not be surprised to see it re-enter the charts next week. At amazon.com it is now top 40 and have been top 100 for a while. It keeps climbing. If amazon is a good indicator, and I think it is, the new Purple album is doing ok.
May 17th, 2013 at 12:30/France: unfortunately, the official second week position of NW is n° 57 (not 44 — those are just so-called “physical” sales). n°23 position in first week correctly refers to physical sales+legal downloads.

May 18th, 2013 at 06:03No 81 in current week in UK.
May 19th, 2013 at 18:04Checking the UK rock album chart, they are as noted no 3 up 1, overtaking Joe Satriani who is down 6 to 8.
However, apparently neither Bat out of Hell nor Best of Bon Jovi is a Rock album – both are listed above Deep Purple on the Album Chart. Oddly Tubular Bells is a rock album.
Categories, don;t you just love them.

Assuming exponential decay in sales, first week (April 26 to May 2) numbers can be estimated at 85 to 90 thousand, with 160-170 thousand cumulative for the first three weeks.”
Ditch your “85 to 90 thousand” – that misses the point of how charts are measured and reported!!! Charts are always in arrears, Purple were never going to be in the charts for any week to 2nd May, as that was its first week on sale. Look at Germany – one of the first countries to see the album but has only had two charts as yet. Yesterday’s UK chart carries a week ending date of 25th May – the week that it is current (19th to 25th), not the week’s sales that it measured (12th-18th).
The 51,000 relates to the first week of chart action. There is no uniform week ending date. Some are published a day after the week to which they relate (UK), Germany’s is published 8 days after the week to which sales they relate.
You also wrote:
“with numbers appearing to be not cumulative,”
Obviously, because charts are of sales in any given week in isolation (not cumulative sales).
May 20th, 2013 at 05:24Nigel:
May 20th, 2013 at 22:58the charts are in arrears, but not *that much* in arrears. e.g. chart posted on may 4 (http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums-week19-2013.htm) already has several albums which were released on april 23 pretty high up, but not purple, which started appearing on april 26. so still don’t think 51,000 includes all the sales from the very beginning, albeit my estimate of 85-90,000 is definitely overly optimistic. the true number must be under 20,000 as that was the chart cutoff figure for week 19.

May 23rd, 2013 at 12:18http://www.billboard.com/artist/300672/deep-purple/chart?f=305
Purple is back on the Billboard charts in the USA at 110 this week. I had a feeling this would happen. Since the VP video, their sales on Amazon USA has been as high as 37 and consistently in top 100.
http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200?page=5
Unfortunately it appears they are not doing “That Metal Show.” That would have been another big boost. It was ripe for a 1 hour Purple show. The shows were tapped in May so I have no idea why Purple’s management did not dispatch at least Steve, Roger and Ian Gillan.
May 23rd, 2013 at 12:30Also, #7 in Hard rock chart this week just behind Joe Satriani (Billboard USA 1 June). Apparently Purple was number 20 last week.

May 28th, 2013 at 21:47Nigel @118:
ok, ok, you’ve convinced me about germany and uk. but can you account for all the countries like that?
e.g. it looks like russian sales are not included in mediatraffik.de’s numbers because they have no official charts (notwithstanding the recent claim of #3 and 25,000):
my point is, the numbers quoted by mediatraffik are estimates and should not be taken as the whole truth and nothing but the truth. that’s why my disclaimer of <20,000 in the first week. we just don’t know for sure. and probably will never know.
May 28th, 2013 at 23:04The album release dates were fixed to maximize the sales in the first week. The 51k IS the first week’s sales. My point is there is no territory where initial sales fell-down-the-back-of-the-settee. IF you could find a territory where they entered the chart ‘a week late’, you might be on to something but I doubt you’ll find such a beast. (DPAS were knocking out copies Thu-Fri-Sat prior to its release to get them to people for the Monday – I don’t know if those counted in any UK chart return stats. Oh and about three copies in Denmark got out early.)
May 29th, 2013 at 00:28The only oddity was a UK release on a Friday for ATTITW and HTP, giving them just Friday/Saturday on sale. UK singles are usually available as downloads on Sundays and physical copies from Mondays.
Russia is still a law unto itself. 🙂
Your:
May 3: ??? (between 0 and 20,000)
May 10: 51,000
May 17: 30,000
May 24: 25,000
Should be:
May 3: 51,000
May 10: 30,000
May 17: 25,000
May 24 TBA (but we may never know, unless Japan and USA make a difference)

May 29th, 2013 at 00:51First… sorry for my English
There is another source (I have been checkin’ it for years) that shows a diferent amount of sales. Here is the link:
http://www.musicharts.net/index.php?cat=charts&chid=0
That’s the link for the sales of the week from 6-5-13 to 12-5-13; you can check previous weeks too. The data that offers this page are as follow:
week 22-4-13 28-4-13 nº 40 worlwide 19.100
week 29-4-13 5-5-13 nº 8 worlwide 76.200
week 6-5-13 12-5-13 nº 20 worlwide 37.300
As you can see, the numbers are slighty better… ( 132.600 sold!)… not that bad…
May 29th, 2013 at 07:35According to the sales in Norway, they should be near “gold” there by now.
Maybe they can reach “gold” in Germany and Finland, too.

Probably this chart exclude japanese artists?

July 11th, 2013 at 13:58Does anyone have information about certification in Norway? In post 123 Emilio Urdapilleta said that the band is close to “gold” and that was more than 40 days ago.
Strange is also the fact that the golden certification in Poland is not published on the ZPAV site (http://www.zpav.pl/rankingi/wyroznienia/zlote/index.php ) one month after have been announced on the band’s facebook site.
July 11th, 2013 at 14:28joroz @170:
we have learnt the hard way to take with a big grain of salt any sales claims the record company makes 😉
July 11th, 2013 at 22:21Probably the record company doesn’t feel the necessity to proof the certification, which I think it’s a shame.

July 31st, 2013 at 08:14180K without significant U.S. sales isn’t half bad. If they could get on Leno or Letterman and show the Vincent Price video to a larger audience…I seriously think it would sell pretty well here in the states too….

September 11th, 2013 at 07:35I am sick of American radio stations. I am an American citizen and it pains me when they play Deep Purple music because its always smoke on the water, hush, woman from Tokyo and that’s it. No playing of anything on now what, abandon and perpendicular let alone all the other albums. No wonder the new album is not in the top 10 and going platinum in the US. and to think that Deep Purple is not in the rock and roll hall of fame is a joke because Deep Purple is the greatest band of all time.

September 14th, 2013 at 15:47I’m from Michigan. The president of Eagle Rock Entertainment sent Purple’s “Now What” CD to a Grand Rapids “classic rock” program director, and he has yet to even play it. The program director has been brainwashed by corporate radio that the listeners don’t want to hear any new music.
September 15th, 2013 at 01:51Classic Rock magazine says in the publication below that “Now What” sales exceeded 250 000 copies

I would rather read about the great merits of actual Music. Let’s not forget, Pop Music charts are full of reprehensible drivel like (c)Rap!
