Steve Morse apparently joined Deep Purple because of Jon Lord, from what I read all those years ago. He stated then that Lord was his favourite keyboard player & to play in a band with him was off the planet so to speak, & a chance you simply do not let slip by!
A touching statement from Morse, Lord will always be missed! RIP.
I had more than hoped not long after Steve joined Purple, that he and Jon would have written an album for banjo, organ, and piano. Would have been a masterpiece. Just look at the parts and the sum thereof. Easy mathematics. :>
While it often seems that Steve still considers himself the “new guy” in Deep Purple,he always speaks fondly about when he joined the band. His affection for Jon is obvious.
Words LEGEND & ICON are thrown around way to indiscriminately especially these days. BUT they are most proper when describing Jon Lord. Boy, do we miss you Lordy and we marvel how Don has kept your legacy intact on Now What?!
Thanks Steve for your kind words. I a way we’re bonded, we feel the same through the music!
Jon’s playing was like a celebration of life and happiness! We miss him!
Finally watched this interview. Great short homage from Steve to his true friend. Listening to his testimony about Jon Lord and describing him as ‘Larger than Life’ echoes the words in the song ‘Uncommon Man’. He was 20 feet tall and King of the Keys. Also, one thing Steve can take from this is that HE was chosen by the Great Maestro to play the guitar part on the studio recording of his most cherished creation ‘The Concerto’. Pretty obvious what Mr. Lord thought of Steve’s playing. Talk about a goodbye gift from a true friend….
Good for you Steve and thanks for expressing yourself about Jon as you did here. Quite revealing regarding your sincerity. Class act to say the least.
